Work Text:

Aventurine stood at the other side of the door, and he looked exactly like he always did. That same smug, overconfident smile, and casual demeanor.

You didn't say a word as you stared at him blankly, not knowing what to say. Your emotions swirled inside your mind, and you were sure he could read them all.

Anger

Sadness

Relief

Greif

Confusion

Love

“I know this must be quite the shock dear.” he chimed playfully, a gloved hand running through his sandy blond hair. How could he stand there like everything was normal? Like this was normal?

Aventurine tilted his head after a moment or two of silence finally realizing that you weren't going to speak, “Did I really stun you into silence?” he mused, that same teasing tone you had grown to miss ringing loudly in the quiet morning air.

You wanted to scream that this wasn't real, that it was all some elaborate prank. Because, if it was real, why didn't he contact you sooner? Why didn't the IPC tell you sooner? Why didn't Topaz tell you sooner?

 Aventurine was dead.

You knew this.

He was also right in front of you.

You knew this.

You knew it had to be him; every small mannerism told you it was. Every imperfection on his skin told you it was. Every inflection in his voice told you it was him.

He was real and alive and in front of you and you wanted nothing more than to hug him and tell him how much you missed him but something in your heart was yelling out like it had been murdered by the sight of him.

You let out a shaky breath and saw his uncomfortable expression before you felt the warm tears against your cheeks. He never was good at dealing with emotions, no matter who's they were.

“Hey.” You don't know when Aventurine stepped closer, but he cupped your cheek in his hand the warm leather of his glove was sticky against your skin as he clumsily wiped your tears.

“How?” you uttered the single word between choked sobs. Aventurine died a week ago so how was he here?

“Why?” You questioned weakly, your eyes meeting his concerned gaze that no doubt was hiding his panic. Aventurine was alive, so why didn't he tell you sooner?

You let yourself get lost in his eyes, the waves of ocean blue meeting the violet of a sunset. He looked at you and you looked back, some sort of understanding forging itself into existence without the need for words.

He was here and your heart was singing because you knew it was reality but no matter how hard you tried your brain was failing to keep up with what was real.

Aventurine hushed you softly as he guided you inside, the door shutting softly, private moments are safest shared between the warm walls of a home. It was only home again because he was here.

A hand snaked around your waist and pulled you closer, the other still rested on your cheek, “Please don't cry, my dear.” Aventurine whispered the words in your ear so delicately that you weren't sure they even existed.

Something about the words flared the angry part of you causing you to pull away from him slightly, “Why didn't you say anything.” The words were sharp and painful, they cut your mouth on the way out. “You let me believe you were dead for a whole week and then you come back like it was nothing?” Your tone was of pure frustration, but it was only floating on top of a river of agony and relief which flowed over a bed of love.

Accompanied by tears and unstable breaths you continued to speak, “Did you even try to contact me? A whole week and you didn't think to say anything to me? You could have even got someone to do it for you. Just...anything.” You finished weakly.

Aventurine’s lips pressed to your softly and you immediately melted into it. He didn't know what to do when faced with your anger, he never did. He didn't know what to do with any of your emotions when they were placed in his hands with so much trust.

But he knew how to love you, and he could do it flawlessly. To kiss you until you were breathless and could no longer remember any of your grievances with him. Or pepper your skin with light pecks of his lips until the tears faded and they were replaced by the sweet sound of your laughter. He would do it over and over and over again.

And you would fall for it over and over and over again.
