Work Text:
You had invited Azul on an outing to the beach. He had seemed uninterested, yet still went. He didn't know why you asked him, of all people, but was curious as to if you were planning anything. After all, one wouldn't just invite someone on an outing for no reason, right? However, you aren't a schemer and simply invited him to spend him together.
Currently, you were lying in the sun, while Azul rested under an umbrella. The sound of the waves was all that you two heard, aside from occasional seagulls cawing.
"Azul, isn't this nice?" You ask, your voice cutting through the awkward silence between the two of you.
"I don't understand the appeal," Azul answers bluntly, before adding, "Why did you invite me, Yuu?"
"To spend time together," You responded.
An awkward silence filled the air. Neither of you knew what to say next.
"Oh, uh, look!" You exclaimed, trying to remove the silence. "Doesn't that cloud look like a clam?"
Azul looked around, pushing his glasses up as they dropped the edge of his nose.
"No. No, Yuu. It does not. It looks like an amalgamation, not a clam," He said, matter-of-factly. You felt stupid.
"Well, like, it has that little circle in the middle, and the cloud behind it and another cloud in front of it, so that's what I meant," You pointed out, trying to make Azul see from your perspective. He sighed.
More silence. It was inevitable, it seemed. Like a doomed first date, you thought.
Time to change the subject! Again!
"So, um, the weather's pretty good, right?" You asked, hesitantly. Was this how one should commence small talk?
"It's nice," Azul commented, dryly.
Oh god, this was harder than it looked. Why was small talk so hard?
"So, um, how has your day been?" This was the only other bit of small talk you knew. If this didn't work, you were out of ideas.
"My day has been pleasant. How about yours, Yuu?"
Yes! It worked! You had to control yourself to not jump for joy at that moment.
"It's been nice, and this beach visit has been wonderful, don't you think?"
"I don't understand the appeal. Why do humans think so highly of sand and water?"
God. Fucking. Damnit.
After another awkward thirty minutes, the two of you arrived back at the inn, into your shared room.
"I want your fried chicken at grub time," Azul said as soon as you shut the door.
Where in Miitopia did that come from.
"...What? Azul, why? Why should I give you my fried chicken?" You asked, confused. Even if fried chicken wasn't your favorite food, the idea of just giving your food to someome else was an idea you loathed with your whole being.
"I want fried chicken," He answered plainly.
"And? That doesn't mean I'll just hand over my food, Azul." You crossed your arms, thinking that you'd won.
"If you don't, I'll tell the party that you are horrible at small talk, Yuu. You looked positively silly." He gave you a shit-eating smirk as you could feel the smugness radiating from his voice.
Fuck that bastard, you thought.
That cunning little merman had gave you an ultimatum.
That night, you ate goblin ham. Azul ate fried chicken.
