Chapter One: Whispers of the Ocean

From an early age, Seokjin has felt a blend of admiration and respectful apprehension toward the ocean. His uncle, who lived by the sea, often welcomed Seokjin and his family for visits during his childhood. Together, they would explore the beach, searching for crabs and building sandcastles. These moments are cherished memories for Seokjin, especially the fishing trips with his family. He vividly recalls casting his first line, the thrill of hooking his first catch, and the joy of sharing a delicious meal together.

However, his father's cautionary words about the ocean's dangers have always lingered in his mind. He warned Seokjin about the violent waves that could swallow him whole and the perilous creatures lurking beneath the surface. This instilled in Seokjin a deep respect and careful understanding of the ocean and its inhabitants.

As Seokjin grew older, his love for the ocean deepened, leading him to embark on solo fishing trips. Fishing became his sanctuary, a way to immerse himself in the serene beauty of the sea and find tranquility within its vast expanse. There was one particular spot near his uncle's house that he favored. For several weeks now, Seokjin had been returning to this specific location, drawn not just by the abundance of fish but by an inexplicable feeling that kept pulling him back. Unbeknownst to him, he was being watched.

Beneath the waves, a merman with doe-like eyes and an enchanting smile had been observing Seokjin from afar. The merman found himself mesmerized by the human's beauty and grace, drawn to the way Seokjin's eyes sparkled with a mix of wonder and determination. The merman's heart fluttered each time Seokjin cast his line into the water, hoping to catch a glimpse of his face.

For weeks, the merman hid among the coral reefs and seaweed, content to observe Seokjin from a distance. He would secretly assist Seokjin by guiding fish onto his hooks, feeling a surge of joy each time he witnessed Seokjin's delight at his successful "catch." Seokjin, unaware of this hidden helper, believed he was becoming a skilled fisherman, marveling at the abundance of fish he always reeled in. Yet, as the days passed, the merman's curiosity and admiration for Seokjin intensified. He felt an irresistible urge to break the barrier between their worlds, yearning to get closer and learn more about the human who had unknowingly captured his attention.

One bright afternoon, the merman mustered his courage and decided it was time to approach Seokjin. He swam up to the boat, carrying a large tuna he had caught as a gift. His heart pounded in his chest as he surfaced, filled with both anticipation and hope. Seokjin, engrossed in his fishing, was startled by a sudden splash and turned around. His eyes widened in shock and fear as they locked with the merman, a creature straight out of legends. Stumbling backward, he nearly tripped over his fishing gear, his mind struggling to process the unbelievable sight before him.

"W-What are you?" Seokjin stammered, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and disbelief.

The merman's heart sank at Seokjin's reaction. He had hoped for a different response, but he couldn't blame the human for being scared. "I'm Jungkook, a merman," he said softly, extending the large tuna fish as an offering. "I brought you this as a gift."

Seokjin hesitated, his mind racing with tales of enchanting sirens who lured sailors to their doom. The fear and uncertainty in his eyes were palpable. "Is this a trick?" he asked, his voice edged with suspicion and unease. "Are you trying to drag me into the water and drown me?"

Jungkook shook his head, his expression earnest and sorrowful. "No, I promise. I mean you no harm. I've been watching you, helping you fish. I just wanted to finally meet you," he explained, his voice suddenly shy. "I think you're kind and beautiful. I just wanted to give you something."

Seeing the sincerity in Jungkook's eyes, Seokjin's fear began to subside. He stepped closer, cautiously taking the fish from Jungkook's hands. "Thank you," he said softly. "I'm sorry for being suspicious. It's just... the stories I've heard always warned against beautiful merfolk."

Jungkook blushed and smiled, relief washing over him. Seokjin thinks I'm beautiful, he thought.

From that day on, Seokjin and Jungkook began to meet regularly. Every time Seokjin went out to fish, Jungkook would be there, waiting to spend time with him. They shared stories about their worlds; Seokjin marveled at the wonders of the ocean, while Jungkook was fascinated by the mysteries of the human world.

Jungkook discovered that Seokjin enjoyed telling terrible dad jokes, had a passion for something called video games, and possessed a playful nature along with a laugh that sounded like a dolphin's call. Seokjin learned that Jungkook was incredibly athletic, demonstrating his speed in the water and his strength by warding off large sharks that ventured too close. He also came to appreciate Jungkook's adorable bunny smile, his own playful demeanor, and eyes that seemed to contain the entire galaxy.

With each meeting, their bond grew stronger, steadily bridging the gap between their two worlds.

As weeks turned into months, Jungkook's feelings for Seokjin deepened. He found himself falling in love with the human, cherishing every moment they spent together. However, Seokjin, while fond of Jungkook, saw him as a friend and nothing more.

One day, Seokjin arrived at their usual meeting spot with an expression Jungkook couldn't quite read. "Jungkook, I need to tell you something," he began hesitantly, his voice barely above a whisper.

Jungkook's heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"

"I've started seeing someone," Seokjin confessed. "I met him through work. He's very handsome and sweet. He told me he had wanted to ask me out for a long time but couldn't muster up the courage. Finally, at a work event, he decided to ask me out. I accepted. But that also means I might not be able to come here as often anymore."

The news hit Jungkook like a wave crashing over him, leaving him feeling adrift and heartbroken. Despite the pain, he forced a smile, trying to be happy for Seokjin. "I understand. I'm glad you've found someone who makes you happy," he said softly, though his heart ached with unspoken love and the realization that he had lost his chance to be with Seokjin.

Without another word, Jungkook turned and swam away, leaving a bewildered Seokjin behind. Seokjin hadn't expected such a swift departure from his merman friend after sharing the news. He had hoped to spend more time with Jungkook, knowing his visits would become less frequent. As Jungkook disappeared beneath the waves, an unexpected sadness and ache filled Seokjin's heart. The sudden loneliness made him realize how much he would miss their time together. Seokjin decided to give both of them time to adjust to the new changes, hoping their bond would endure despite the distance.

Days turned into weeks, and Seokjin began a relationship with Namjoon, a man who was not only intelligent and kind but also endearingly clumsy. Namjoon treated Seokjin with the utmost care, showering him with attention and affection. Despite this, Seokjin couldn’t shake the lingering thoughts of Jungkook. He missed their conversations, the laughter they shared, and the unique bond they had formed.

One day, curiosity got the better of Seokjin, and he asked Namjoon if he believed in mermen. Namjoon chuckled, dismissing them as mere fairytales. But Seokjin’s longing to see Jungkook again grew stronger. He wanted Namjoon to meet Jungkook, hoping that his new boyfriend would understand the special connection he had with the merman.

Determined to reunite with Jungkook, Seokjin planned a fishing trip and invited Namjoon along. Namjoon, always eager to make Seokjin happy, agreed to go, even though he secretly disliked seafood. As they reached Seokjin’s usual spot, he began calling out for Jungkook, his voice filled with hope and anticipation.

Minutes turned into hours, and there was still no sign of Jungkook. Seokjin’s calls grew more desperate, echoing across the water. Namjoon watched, feeling a mixture of concern and sympathy for his boyfriend. He gently suggested, “Maybe the merman is busy with his own life now.”

Seokjin’s heart sank at the thought, and a wave of panic washed over him. The realization that he might never see Jungkook again hit him hard. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he turned to Namjoon, sobbing uncontrollably. Namjoon held him close, offering comfort, though he couldn’t fully understand the depth of Seokjin’s pain.

As Seokjin cried in Namjoon’s arms, he felt a profound sense of loss. The thought of never hearing Jungkook’s laughter or seeing his galaxy-filled eyes again was unbearable. His heart ached in a way he couldn’t explain, and he finally understood just how much Jungkook meant to him. The emptiness left by Jungkook’s absence was a void that even Namjoon’s love couldn’t fill.

Two years passed, bringing many changes to Seokjin’s life. Unfortunately, his relationship with Namjoon didn’t work out. Despite Namjoon’s affection and kindness, Seokjin always felt there was something missing between them. They broke up amicably, deciding to remain good friends. Yet, even as he moved forward, Seokjin couldn’t shake the deep sense of loss that lingered—not from his breakup with Namjoon, but from the absence of Jungkook.

Throughout those two years, Jungkook never left Seokjin’s mind. The memories of their time together haunted him, filling him with a longing he couldn’t ignore. One night, overwhelmed by nostalgia and a desperate need to reconnect with his past, Seokjin decided to drive to the beach where he had first met Jungkook. The moonlit path guided him as he walked, the sound of crashing waves echoing the turmoil in his heart.

Gazing out over the dark, endless ocean, Seokjin felt an aching emptiness. Suddenly, a hauntingly beautiful melody drifted through the air, stopping him in his tracks. The voice was filled with sorrow and longing, yet it was unmistakably familiar. Drawn by the hypnotic sound, Seokjin felt an irresistible urge to move closer to the water.

Entranced by the melody, Seokjin waded into the ocean, the cold water lapping at his legs. The song grew louder, wrapping around him like a spell. Each note seemed to pull him deeper, the strong waves tugging at his body, urging him forward. The farther he went, the more he felt the weight of his longing and the undeniable connection to the voice calling him. As the waves grew stronger, Seokjin realized he was being pulled under, but he couldn’t bring himself to stop. The melody, and the voice, was too powerful to resist.

As the water closed over his head, Seokjin realized too late that he was drowning. Panic set in as he remembered his father's warnings about the ocean's dangers. He struggled against the relentless pull of the currents, feeling himself being dragged deeper. Just as he began to lose hope, strong arms wrapped around him, pulling him towards the surface.

Coughing and sputtering, Seokjin looked up to see his savior's face: it was Jungkook. The merman had grown into a handsome, powerful figure, his eyes filled with concern.

"Jungkook," Seokjin gasped, clinging to him. "You saved me."

Jungkook brought Seokjin to the shore, gently laying him on the sand. "What were you thinking, Jin?" he asked, his voice a mix of relief and frustration.

Seokjin replied, "I heard a voice. It was singing a song. But the voice and song were so sad that I felt compelled to reach out to it."

Jungkook looked at Seokjin with a mix of surprise and apprehension. After a few moments, he responded, "I was singing that song, Seokjin. But why would it affect you? It only affects those who share the same emotions."

Seokjin's eyes widened as he processed Jungkook's words. "I missed you so much, Jungkook. I never stopped thinking about you. The sadness in your song... I felt it too."

Jungkook sighed and slowly pulled away, his eyes reflecting a mix of sorrow and resignation. "Seokjin," he began, his voice heavy with the weight of his words, "I'm not the same merman you once knew. So much has changed in these past two years. I've become a warrior, sworn to protect the King of the Ocean. My responsibilities have grown, and I've seen and experienced things that have made me realize just how different our worlds truly are."

He paused, looking out at the horizon as if searching for the right words. "When I first met you, I was naive. I believed that the connection we shared could transcend the boundaries of our worlds. But now, I understand the harsh reality—our lives are separated by more than just the sea. I've come to terms with the fact that it was foolish of me to think I could fall for a human and that we could find a way to be together."

Jungkook's gaze returned to Seokjin, filled with a deep, unspoken longing. "I've had to harden my heart to survive and protect those I care about. But seeing you again... it brought back all those feelings I thought I had buried. I wish things could be different, but I have to accept that they can't be."

Seokjin was taken aback by Jungkook's confession. "Jungkook... I never realized how you felt. Why didn't you ever tell me?" he asked, his voice tinged with both surprise and regret.

Jungkook shook his head, a pained expression crossing his face. "It doesn't matter now," he murmured, his voice heavy with resignation.

Seokjin's heart ached as he fought back, desperation evident in his eyes. "I don't believe you, Jungkook. If it didn't matter, why were you singing that song?"

Jungkook's eyes softened for a moment, filled with a sorrow that seemed to reach the depths of the ocean itself. "I was singing a final farewell to my human friend," he replied quietly. "This will be our last meeting."

Seokjin's world seemed to crumble around him. Tears streamed down his face as he reached out, clinging to Jungkook with all his strength. "Please don't say that," he begged, his voice choked with emotion. "Please don't leave me, Jungkook. I can't bear the thought of never seeing you again."

Seokjin shook his head, sobbing uncontrollably. "No, there has to be another way. We can find a way. Please, Jungkook, don't leave me."

Jungkook's resolve wavered for a moment as he gazed into Seokjin's tear-filled eyes. But he knew what he had to do. With a heavy heart, he gently disentangled himself from Seokjin's grasp. "Goodbye, Seokjin," he said softly, his voice breaking. "I'll always cherish the time we had together."

As Jungkook turned and swam away, disappearing into the ocean's depths, Seokjin fell to his knees on the sand, his sobs echoing in the night. The weight of their parting settled over him like a heavy shroud, leaving him feeling more alone than ever before.
