“What were you thinking?” | Surrender | Human Shield | Outmatched |
Day 14
Wanda danced around in her sitcom life kitchen. Then there was knock on the backdoor.
“I wonder who that could be?” Smiling at the camera before going to the door. Opening the door she gasps. There is front of her is a man she would not think to conjure up here. But her sons come running and tackling him to the ground.
“Grandpa!” This rattles Wanda hard. It is not her father. It’s the man who took the place of. Who cared for her like he is one of his own. Who helped guide her onto the just path. “Did you bring your bow?”
“Of course, have you been practicing?” He chuckles.
“Yes,” Her sons both chorus.
“Good, go get em.” Her children run from the room leaving her alone with Clint Barton. Clint Barton who takes the role of her father and her kids grandfather.
~
“Are you sure it was a good idea to send him in?” Darcy voices as she watches the show. “He’s become a character like everyone else in there.”
“Hawkeye, Mr. Hawkeye,” Woo stumbles over the proper term to call the Avenger legend. “He was more upset that he was not called sooner.”
“I guess we understand his reason for being here.” Darcy voices before retuning to the show.
~
“I missed you kiddo at the farm. So I thought I would visit my favorite daughter.”
“Yes…” Wanda is still staring at him. Clint is here in her world. Shaking it off, “I’m your only daughter, silly.”
“That’s my girl.” Clint pulls her in for a hug. Wanda is cautious for some reason. It fades away quickly as this is Clint’s secure hug. This is not a memory. This is real. Closing her eyes she relishes being secure in caring arms.
“~Wanda?~” Clint voices to her mentally. She looks up into his blue eyes. “~Wanda, I’m here to help you.~” Words that Clint pushed through their mental connection. He had given her that after her brother died. Gave her an anchor to tether herself too. Clint learning quickly how to phone back along it. “~Wanda, what were you thinking?~” The voice scolds a little at her.
“You shouldn’t be here.” Wanda pushes away from him. His eyes flash red with her power taking over. Wanda gasps at this stepping back.
“You okay there, pumpkin.” She feels something break inside her. A promise she made. A promise she made to Clint that she would never play with his mind. “Wands,” Clint steps toward her with fatherly concern. There is so much emotion on his face. So much love and worry for her well being. He lays his hands on her.
“You shouldn’t be here,” her accent slips through.
“Did I upset you?” Clint voices. “Did I do something wrong? I know I came over unannounced but I thought you would be happy to see me.”
“I am,” Wanda begins to tear up. “I am happy to see you.” And she is. Vision is her husband. The one she gave her adult heart too. But her childhood heart. The one that needs a father’s embrace gave it to her biological father and her adopted one.
“Wow, Wanda who is this hotcake?” Agatha walks into the kitchen with a book under her arm.
“Agatha,” Clint greets her. “Beautiful as always.”
“Oh, Stop.” She laughs with him. Wanda can only watch the interaction. “So you taking the boys for some archery lessons.”
“You know it.”
“Well if you can get that rabbit in my yard. I’ll cook him right up for ya.”
“You got your very own Peter Rabbit I see.” Clint smiles at her. Agatha laughs loud.
“Yes, but I intend to actually catch and cook him unlike that old farmer.”
“I’ll help out anyway I can.”
“Thanks Hot Stuff.”
“Get out of here you enchantress.” Agatha freezes at his choice of words. Than switches into a full belly laugh.
“Oh you,” Agatha departs. Wanda can only stare at them. Clint turns to look at her with loving eyes.
“Sweetie, you okay?”
“You need to leave,” She hiccups. Feeling something break inside her. Breaking a promise and meddling with minds. Yet if she doesn’t control she fears it will all fall apart.
“Did I do something wrong?”
“NO, no.” Calming her breath. Collecting herself she steps toward him and raises a hand to his face. The red tint flashes and his eyes become so clear to her.
“Wanda?” Clint Barton, father figure to her, the spy, the avenger, The Hawkeye stands before her now.
“Clint?” they search each other’s eyes. “I didn’t mean to meddle in your head.” He nods seeing her get upset. Clint hugs her. “What are you doing here?”
“Well, I heard you were in trouble and SWORD is outmatched out there trying to deal with your dome.”
“So you came?”
“I will always come for you. All you have to do is call me. I’m here.”
“I missed you.”
“And I’m here for as long as you need me to be.”
“But if you stay you will be like everyone else.”
“Will you ever hurt me?”
“NO.”
“Do you care for me?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Than you have me. I surrender. Just know that I am here for you, always.”
“I don’t deserve you.”
“Sure you do. Go ahead. I have your back for as long as you need me.” The red tinges his eyes as her sitcom world mind takes hold again. Her children run into the kitchen with their archery gear.
“We’re ready grandpa.” they chorus.
“Excellent my mighty warriors.”
“Tommy? Billy?” Wanda Voicing their names settle them down to look at her. Her sons clinging to their grandfather. “How would you like grandpa to spend more time with us?
“Really!?! Cool Beans!” Tommy voices jumping up and down.
“Awesome sauce.” Billy voices clinging tighter to Clint.
“I don’t want to put you out.” Clint voice to her.
“You aren’t dad. I love that you are here.”
