The lights flickered and a loud bang resonated throughout the one-story house as the front door slammed shut.
“Hunt!” Grian announces over the radio, shooting up from his seat at the monitor. He rushes out of the truck to peer through the windows of the house, anxiously checking the front door to see if it had unlocked.
After waiting for what seemed like the longest hunt ever, Grian turned the door knob and the door swung open. “Hunt’s over,” Grian sighed, turning the radio on and off. He walks further into the entrance hallway, frowning at the absence of his friends. “Everyone alive?”
There’s a beat of silence, until “We’re in the basement,” in a frantic tone from Impulse.
Grian’s heart is immediately in his stomach as he stumbles down the stairs in the dark. “Guys? What-” Grian cuts himself off as he is met with an unconscious Scar, head in Skizz’s lap as Impulse kneels in front of them.
Impulse stands up as Grian enters the basement, a grim look on his face. “I know what you’re thinking, G, but he isn’t dead. We think he fell and hit his head, miraculously not getting caught by the ghost.”
Grian let out a sigh of relief, despite the fact that he could feel his hands shaking and his breath coming out in short spurts. “Does he need the hospital?”
“I don’t think so,” Skizz shakes his head, offering a small smile. “Can someone help me get him to the van though?”
Impulse glances at Grian, noticing his position leaning heavily against the wall, staring at his feet. He makes the decision for the group.
“Skizz I’ll help you carry Scar if you keep holding his head. I’ll grab his feet and then Grian can take his cane and get the truck loaded back up.”
“Roger that,” says Skizz. There’s a pause as Grian fails to respond. “Grian?”
Grian blinks rapidly, responding, “Yeah, sorry I’ll get to the truck.” He pushes off the wall, reaches down for Scar’s cane on the floor, and disappears up the stairs.
Impulse sighs and moves over to help Skizz lift Scar. “He’s not okay. I promised that this gig would be easy and both him and Scar got hurt.”
“Don’t beat yourself up, Dippledop. It happens, and if they need a break then we can make sure they get time.” They start moving up the stairs, making their way out the front door.
“I know. I just worry about them.”
“You’re such a dad,” Skizz giggles, prompting an eye roll from Impulse.
Impulse and Skizz enter the truck, setting Scar down on a pile of blankets created by Grian. “Thanks G-man,” Skizz wraps an arm around Grian’s shoulder, pulling him in for a side hug.
“Yeah, yeah,” Grian offers a fake grin, hiding his shaking hands behind his back.
As Impulse moves to close the back door to the truck, a groan comes from the pile of blankets. Grian escapes Skizz’s arm and rushes to join Scar on the floor. “Scar? Can you hear me?”
Scar sits up, supported by Grian’s hand on his back. “Were you guys worried about little old me?” he teases, winking at Grian.
Grian huffs in frustration, “Yes actually, never do that again.”
Impulse and Skizz share a look. “We’re just happy you’re okay Scar,” Impulse pats Scar on the shoulder.
“We’d be lost without ya Scarface.”
“Thanks guys. Can we go home now?” Scar says with a yawn. Grian settles into Scar’s side, resting his head on his shoulder and closing his eyes.
“Skizz, we suck at parenting, it's past the kids' bedtime.” Impulse jokes, getting into the driver's seat next to a laughing Skizz and pulling away.
