Part 1: ‘Just getting ready’
“Thistle, where did you go?” I heard my father call. “Just getting ready!” I called back. Today was reaping day, a day about picking innocent children from 12-18 to battle in a horrific arena for the capitol’s amusement, just extremely sugarcoated to make people think that it was exciting, but the districts see through it. At least, I see through it, just no one would know because no one talks about it because they’re too afraid of being executed for ‘rebellion.’ Goodness, what is wrong with this place? Why do-
I snapped back to reality as my father replies back, “Stop thinking and just make sure you look presentable, alright? Just put on your happy face, or at least your ‘I am not feeling anything right now, completely neutral’ face.”
Right. ‘Calm down,’ I thought. ‘Don’t look like you are about to start an argument with the president, just finish brushing your hair and don’t die from anxiety before you can get to the reaping.’
