Letters From The Horizon

Chapter Text

Hey, Pops!

Long time no see, right? It's me, Rose!

I wanted to write and tell you I'm finally a full-fledged hunter! Remember that Rampage thing I was telling you about? I finally got a chance to join the fight with the old man, and we even managed to split off Magnamalo from the horde, and I freakin' captured it! I wanted to send a picture, but the Elder says I shouldn't taunt it. Whatever, I managed to get a picture in my new armor! Look familiar? It's Rathalos! Yup, I finally graduated from being scared of Pringle to wearing the King of the Skies!

Thanks for the Winter Star gifts, Churro loves his little scarf, and the twins nearly cried when they ate the food you sent over. Guess all the gourmet chefs shipped out with the Fifth, huh? Hinoa and Minoto have a million questions about the New World, so you might want to brace for another, much thicker envelope from them soon. But, really, I just wanted to tell you about me being a hunter now! For real! I'm getting closer and closer to getting tapped for the Sixth Fleet out there with you! At least, I would be, but I know Kamura needs me, especially with you gone, and with the Rampage still breathing down our necks.

Churro and Riptide send all their love too, even if they tried to work together to eat my pen and this letter as I wrote it.

Good luck out there, Dad,
- Rose

A young man with white hair, kneeling on the roof of a wooden building. He's dressed in black and red armor, covered in scales and spikes. He's smiling into the distance.

“Get a letter, Rose?”.

Rose looked up from the letter in his hands, and waved to the hunter behind him.

“Eh? Yeah, Jester. From my kid back home. He finally got his hunter’s license!”.

Jester whistled, sitting down next to Rose at the canteen, waving a hand and tapping a note onto the table, which was quickly taken away by a Felyne in a canteen uniform. As his order was taken, Rose showed the picture to his hunting buddy, who laughed at the picture of Rose Jr., knelt on the roof of Kamura Village’s largest building.

“That’s the little weed, then? Kid shot up quick. Is that Rathalos armor he’s got?”.

“Sure is,” Rose nodded proudly, “I still remember when Pringle used to freak that kid out…” As he said the name, Rose reached down to scratch the head of his Palico, Pringle, munching on some food of his own, who purred happily as he was pet.

“...And now he’s wearing his first real set of scales. You should tell Frost. He’d be fighting to get that kid out here on a fleet of his own,” Jester remarked, rubbing his hands together excitedly as a Felyne set a large plate of various cooked meats in front of him. Rolling his one good eye, Rose laughed, “Him and Junior both. But Junior knows Kamura needs him more than we do.”.

“Hey,” The familiar sound of an Insect Glaive tapping against the floor of Seliana’s Gathering Hub sounded from behind Rose and Jester, who turned to see another member of their group standing behind them, “Eat quick, guys, we’re leaving in ten, and Frost is five from going without us.”.

“Roger that, Case,” Rose gave the one being them a thumbs-up, and Jester quickly scarfed down the rest of the large platter in front of him, with the help of Rose stealing one of the shrimp off a skewer.

“Think you’re gonna write him back?” Jester asked as the two stood, picking up his sword and shield, making for the wingdrake platform. Rose shrugged, following behind as he slung his hammer over his shoulder, “When we get back. Gotta get a picture to send too.”.
