Work Text:
Now That I Found Us
Wylan couldn’t stop himself from smiling when he got up this morning. Neither him nor Jesper had to work, and so they could spend the whole day together - only that Jesper had opted out of staying in bed as it seemed, and had gotten up to make them some breakfast. Wylan could already smell that he was making pancakes, his favourite. Sure, he would have loved to cuddle with him for a bit, but waking up to breakfast? He wouldn’t say no to this. After all, they could always stay in bed some other time, since there hadn’t been a morning where they hadn’t woken up next to each other ever since Nina and Matthias’s wedding, when Wylan had asked him to move in with him.
Even before that, they’d spent most nights together, because they slept a lot better with the other one by their side. It hadn’t taken long for Jesper to pack his things and properly move in, and by now, the place looked like both of them were living there. It was most obvious in all the pictures they’d put up, but also in the new pillows and blankets with more vibrant colours and patterns that hadn’t been there before.
“Do you want to spoil me this morning?” Wylan asked as he stepped up to Jesper in the kitchen. He was already preparing their plates, but then he looked at Wylan with a grin on his face.
“Good morning to you too. And yes, maybe I do.” The plates forgotten for a moment, Jesper closed the distance between them and kissed Wylan. “Did you sleep alright?”
“I always do next to you.” Which wasn’t entirely true, because every now and then, there were nightmares, but that was true for Jesper as well. But even then, when they woke up, they had someone right by their side who could wrap them in their arms and just be there for them.
“Same here. I hope you’re hungry.” Jesper was brimming with energy, which could be tiresome now and again, but Wylan was used to it, and they pretty much balanced each other out.
“Oh yes. The smell alone makes my mouth water. They look delicious.” When Wylan wanted to reach for the plates, Jesper quickly took them and brought them to the table. There were already Jesper’s coffee mug and Wylan’s teacup, both of them already filled, which was obvious by the steam rising from them. Jesper had really thought of everything.
“I learned from the best.” Jesper winked at Wylan before they both settled down at the table.
“Smooth talker,” Wylan mumbled with a grin, reaching for his cup.
“Don’t pretend you don’t love it.” Jesper stuck out his tongue, before he had to laugh. It was so easy between them, so effortless, and it was always okay to let their inner child out. There was nothing they had to hide from the other one.
The pancakes were delicious, but Wylan hadn’t expected anything else from Jesper. It was a great start to the day.
“So, what are the plans for today?” Jesper asked him, leaning back in his chair as he cradled the mug in his hands.
They hadn’t made proper plans, hadn’t talked about this, because it hadn’t been planned that Jesper had the day off as well, but their new employee at the Crow Coffee Shop was doing great work, and was eager as well, so that Jesper was able to stay home today. But there was actually something Wylan had to do sooner rather than later.
“I actually have this thing that I have to go to in a couple of days.”
He hadn’t mentioned it before, had pushed it away so that he didn’t have to think about it. He had never been a big fan of these huge events, social gatherings, mingling with strangers and all that. That was Nina’s part, but since she was pregnant, and the calculated date of birth was in a week, he didn’t want her going there. Nina being Nina had of course told him that she could do that, but that was just her nature. Neither him nor Matthias wanted to patronise her, they wouldn’t even dare, but she knew that it was better for her as well. Especially after the doctor had told her to take it easy and don’t do too much. As for the Sunshine Bakery, they had found wonderful people that worked for them, and Nina could still do social media from home. But this event, that was something Wylan had to take upon himself. It would be good to meet other people in the business, exchange some ideas, and the food and drinks were supposed to be great as well.
“Normally, Nina would go, but now that’s my turn. And I really need something to wear for that.”
“Sounds like we’re gonna go on a shopping trip.” Jesper hid his smile behind his mug as he took another sip. He’d never say no to going shopping with Wylan. “You mentioned once that you wanted to try something a little different, and if you’re uü for it, we can go to one of my favourite shops.”
Jesper wondered why they hadn’t been there before, but to be fair, they hadn’t been on that many shopping trips together. He really hoped Wylan would say yes, because he had few things in mind that would be absolutely stunning on Wylan.
And Wylan had said yes. About two hours later, they found themselves in the little store Jesper had told him about. It looked nice and cosy with all kinds of clothes. Subdued colours as well as brighter ones, and when Wylan saw all the patterns, he knew why Jesper liked this store so much. He could take a guess which clothes he’d gotten here, some of his kilts most definitely.
“Jesper, what a pleasure to see you here!” The young woman stepped up from behind the counter where she’d just stitched something onto a vest.
“Hey Nora! Well, I finally had to bring my boyfriend here to find him something nice to wear.” Jesper squeezed Wylan’s hand that he was holding, the proud grin on his lips something Wylan would never get used to. Jesper was always introducing him as his boyfriend, and that alone made his heart skip a little beat.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Wylan said, extending his free hand to her.
“Oh, the pleasure is all mine.” Nora shook his hand, looking between the two. “Jesper, you know where everything is, and if you need any help, just holler.”
“You got it.”
They stepped away from the counter and headed in one direction, Wylan’s eyes going here and there, trying to take it all in.
“Can I choose something for you?” Jesper asked, making Wylan look up at him again. He was so excited and happy that Wylan couldn’t say no. He didn’t even want to, because he was curious just what Jesper would choose for him.
“Of course. I’d really like that. You’ll choose something and I’ll choose something. Let’s meet at the fitting room once we’re done, okay? Then we can see which one’s gonna be the one for the event.”
“Oh, I do love a challenge.” Jesper grinned, but before he let Wylan go, he had to steal another kiss from his lips.
Wylan smiled to himself, but then he set out to have a look around. There were so many great things here, but he wasn’t sure if they were really for him, whether he’d feel comfortable in them or not. There was only one way to find out, but since this was for an event, he quickly fell back into his usual patterns and chose two outfits. To be quite honest, he was more excited for Jesper’s choices anyway, what he thought would look good on him, what he wanted to see him in.
They both took their time to find the right things, but when they met at the fitting room, Jesper grinned even wider.
“You look very happy,” Wylan said with a chuckle, taking a look at what Jesper had in hand. “You even brought shoes?”
“Yes, but just for one outfit. And I’m so excited to see you in that one. So, maybe take this one first and then this one.” Jesper pointed at the ones he meant once he’d hung them up. “But let me see your choices first, okay?”
“Will do.” Another chuckle on Wylan’s part before he pointed at the sofa that was put right across from the cubicle they’d chosen, so that Jesper could get comfortable there.
The outfits he’d chosen were the first that he presented to Jesper, and both of them looked lovely on him, very Wylan, and he even chose to take one of them, just not for the event. He’d wear it some other time, maybe even when going out with Jesper, but it was just too nice not to take it home with him. Jesper was right, though, because he’d said that he wanted to try something different, wear something different. But that was what Jesper had chosen for him in the end.
The first one was a bit exaggerated and when Wylan stepped outside of the cubicle, he was immediately pulling on the sleeves, and Jesper shook his head.
“Not good?” Wylan asked, tilting his head to the side.
“That’s not it. It looks great on you.” He got up from the sofa and stepped up to his boyfriend, framing his face with his hands. “But you don’t feel comfortable. I can tell when you don’t.”
That was true. Jesper was very, very observant when it came to Wylan, was able to read the signs most of the time. Just like Wylan could sense when Jesper got overwhelmed, when he lost focus, and he could be there for him to ground him in a way. Sometimes, they didn’t need any kind of verbal communication.
“You’re right, I don’t.”
“Thank you for coming out and showing me, still.” Jesper leaned down and placed a soft kiss on Wylan’s lips, letting them linger there for a moment before pulling back again. “Ready for the last one? And if it’s not for you, we can look together again.”
“Yes, ready.” Now, it was Wylan, who rose to the balls of his feet and kissed him once more before turning around to change into the last outfit, the one Jesper was so excited about.
Once he’d changed into the suit, he put on the shoes as well and looked at himself in the mirror for a moment. He never would have chosen this himself, but he had to admit that he kinda liked it. It was most certainly different. A suit with short trousers wasn’t something he’d seen before. At least not that he could recall. The striped dress shirt Jesper had chosen to go with it, fitted perfectly with the pattern on the suit itself, and it felt amazing against his skin.
“You okay?”
Jesper’s voice made him aware that he was still standing inside the cubicle, and he quickly shook his head to clear his mind.
“Yes,” he said as he stepped outside and in front of his boyfriend, who immediately looked him up and down. Wylan stood there with a smile on his face, rocking back and forth on his heels, waiting for a reaction from Jesper - who didn’t say anything, just kept looking at him. “Are you okay?”
“Hm? Oh, more than okay.” Jesper got up from the sofa again. “You look stunning. Really I knew it was going to look great on you, but this…” He shook his head slightly, before he took Wylan’s hand and led him to the full length mirror. “I know the trousers are a little unconventional, but-”
“I like them,” Wylan cut him off, squeezing his hand. “I was sceptical at first, but the whole outfit just fits together so well.”
“Yeah?” Jesper stepped behind him to look at his reflection in the mirror, taking him in completely. He couldn’t resist to wrap one arm around his middle and pulled him back against his chest. “I’m really glad. You’re gonna blow them all away in this.”
“On one condition.” Wylan put his hand on top of Jesper’s, turned his head a little so that he could look up at him.
“Hm? Which is?”
“That you come with me.”
That seemed to surprise Jesper a little bit. Wylan could see it in his eyes.
“You want me to go to that event with you?” Jesper had to make sure that he understood him correctly.
“Yes, I want you by my side. I want to hold your hand and introduce you as my boyfriend for a change.” Wylan smiled softly. Of course whenever someone had asked him, he’d said who Jesper was, but there had actually been so many more occasions when they’d met someone that Jesper knew than the other way around. Or it had been people Wylan knew because of his father, and those weren’t exactly the people he wanted to spend some time with. “But most importantly, I just want you by my side for that evening, so we can enjoy it together.”
“Ohh, I’d love to be your date for that evening.” Jesper wiggled his eyebrows and hugged Wylan a little closer.
“You make it sound like we haven’t been going out for months now.” A chuckle toppled over Wylan’s lips, as he intertwined his fingers with Jesper’s. He couldn’t begin to describe just how happy he was that they were here now, that Jesper hadn’t just given up on him.
“Well, to be fair, every date with you has a special feeling to it, so maybe, that’s that.” leaning down, he placed a kiss on Wylan’s neck, drawing a sigh from his lips with that. “So yes, I’d love to accompany you.”
“I wouldn’t have taken no for an answer anyway.” Wylan chuckled once again, but then he let go of Jesper’s hand so he could turn around and kiss him properly.
Where he’d dreaded the event before, he was now looking forward to it, because he’d have the most wonderful company. Jesper made everything better for him, and now that he’d found him, he’d never let go of him again.
