Work Text:

- 11 December, 2020 -

"It's all good, thanks for your hard-work today, " Issei high-fived one of his co-workers.

He saw the first fall of snow during the ride home. The air has gotten cold outside, and it's no better in the car with its air conditioner on. All that's left to do was to get home and take a warm bath.

But he's a fool to think that he could catch a break after a warm bath. Ah, how could he forget his regular calls with Tooru?

He sighed when he heard his phone ringing from across his apartment.

"Sup, what are you up to?" Issei spoke to the other end of the line, just after he slid up the green button on his phone when someone with the contact name "do not answer" called.

"Yahoo, Mattsun~! My calendar told me you're starting your break today?" Tooru grinned to Matsukawa on the video-call. With not much thought, he started spouting out his mind. "Me and iwa-chan just talked about our old high-school this morning, and I thought I'd share it with you."

All the memories started flooding into the both of their minds once Tooru had said that.

It doesn't feel like six years had passed by. Now that they're 24, their graduation was over half a decade ago.

"And what gossips have you heard from Watari?" Issei put his phone down, leaning it on a tissue box to let his hand free.

"Wha— HOW DID YOU KNOW IT WAS WATARI?!" Tooru shouted wide-eyed.

Issei giggled at that. "Isn't it obvious though? He's the only junior that you still catch up with to this day. I overheard you shit-talking with him during our team reunion."

"Ah, yes! We should do another reunion, what do you think?" Tooru started another topic.

Issei huffed, "Would be great if Makki could come, though."

It's not much of a sob story, but Mattsun can't lie and say that he didn't miss Makki. He thought it was strange how he disappeared from their lives right after graduation day. Not even an instagram post about memes.

"Damn you for reminding me. I actually tried texting his number, but it didn't work! It wasn't even on delivered." Tooru complained over the phone.

"Dude, he probably blocked you. It's deserved, you're whiny." Issei smirked, resting his chin on his palm.

Tooru gasped extra dramatically, "WHINY?! Oh, is that what you think of ME?"

"Mhmm, I hope it's obvious," he rolled his eyes.

"Aren't you just jealous I pulled sixteen different girls at once during high-school? You should see, I keep my old texts!"

"Speaking of which..?" Mattsun paused, "I still have my old phone as well."

Mattsun smirked, remembering all the black-mails he had of Tooru from their school days.

"That would be useless Mattsun~ You couldn't even get a girlfriend, whose texts are you gonna read?" Tooru teased.

"Could make use of my old screenshots," Mattsun threatened. Right after that, he zoned out. He tried to remember where he put his old phone from high-school.

He could faintly hear Tooru complaining in the background, but if he remembered clear enough he still had photos with Makki that he hadn't transfered to his new phone. "I'll call you back," Mattsun hung up harshly.

His parents bought him a new phone right before graduation, and he recalled how he straight away used it.

He planned on giving his new number to his friends during graduation, and that means all the texts from the night before are unread.

So ten minutes later, he found himself holding his old smartphone after opening countless dusty boxes. When he could finally turn it on, the first thing he saw was unread notifications from over half-a-decade ago.

Makki 😎💪🏼

- I'm in love with you

- I didn't have the courage to say that

Notes:

just realized i actually should have written this in hanamaki's pov so the title makes sense but i wanted that moment where matsukawa realizes he messed up when he sees the text.
