Work Text:

Alan had been in the abyss for a short while now, he wasn't sure how long exactly, but it seemed to have been around a week. When he arrived, he knew nothing of himself, of anything at all, just that he didn't belong wherever he was. Though, he just knew he had to find a way out of wherever he was.

Just from existing around, Alan knew that he wasn't like the other creatures around. The others were often huge, sometimes their heads resembling a star or some other celestial body. Some were keen on trying to eat him alive, although there was one of these creatures that stood out from the rest.

Alan didn't know its name, all he knew is its face resembled the moon, so he resorted to calling it "the moon-faced guy." Moon, its actual name, wasn't too far from it without Alan realizing.

Ever since Alan arrived in this abysmal place and laid eyes on Moon for "the first time," he thought that Moon was very attractive. However, no amount of beauty can keep Alan from feeling like he shouldn't be near Moon.

You see, Alan had been there long enough to know of his beastly form, as well as how, out of his control, he goes out into a forest at night with Moon watching as he chases people towards a cliff and into their untimely deaths. Alan hates it. Who would enjoy killing innocent people, anyway?

One particular night, Alan couldn't take much of it anymore after seeing a young woman around his age fall into Moon's trap.

"I don't get it," Alan cried out, his face near the grassy floor as he fell down to his knees a few feet from Moon, "Why are you doing this?"

Like always, Moon didn't respond. The first and last thing it had told Alan was his name and that his arrival at the abyss was "the choice he had made." All of it confused Alan tremendously.

All he could muster was his voicing of injustice, "She didn't deserve to end this way, no one does."

With Alan crying in front of him, Moon stared down, its face contorted, similar to that of paint dripping down a canvas. No answers ever left its mouth. Although Alan couldn't sense it, Moon was responding through its heart with the final question he had always been asking.

"Will I, one day, be able to free myself from you?"

It would seem like such a silly question to any other astral, once, Moon himself found it quite stupid as the answer was so clear to him. But now? Moon felt something new.

A feeling similar to a sting, a slight ache in his chest at the words of the beastly sinner below him. Unbeknownst to Alan, Moon had grown fond of Alan in their months together before the inevitable. Moon knew it shouldn't get attached, but with Alan, it couldn't help but feel softened by Alan's strange endearment towards him. Why, although Alan didn't remember any of it, the two had shared.... unexpectedly "intimate" situations together, to put it simply.

By contract, Alan was bound to Moon. Before dying, Alan had asked Moon to never leave his side, so Moon offered him this chance of revival with what he wished in exchange for the rest of his memories, so they are here where they are now.

Alan couldn't see Moon's face, as his own was currently down towards the ground as he sobbed, but if he had looked up, he would see a face of hurt.

Alan didn't know it, but he had loved the Moon, and it had loved him back.

Moon just wished it could have expressed it better before now.
