It was a typical evening in Kamurocho. Neon lights blazed through the streets, casting a colorful glow on the throngs of people bustling about. Kiryu Kazuma, the legendary Dragon of Dojima, was strolling through the familiar alleys, contemplating his next move in a seemingly endless cycle of Yakuza entanglements.
As he walked past Club SEGA, his attention was drawn to a peculiar sight. A young girl with a distinctive short bob haircut and an oversized jacket was standing in front of the arcade, intently examining a nearby electrical box. She seemed out of place, a small figure absorbed in her task amidst the chaos of the city.
Kiryu approached her, curiosity piqued. “Hey, kid. What are you doing here all alone?”
The girl looked up, her eyes widening slightly at the sight of the imposing man. “I’m... Lain. Lain Iwakura. And I’m not really alone. I’m just... investigating something.”
Kiryu raised an eyebrow. “Investigating? Are you in trouble?”
Lain shook her head. “No, it’s just... something to do with the Wired. It’s complicated.”
Kiryu, although having no idea what this "Wired" place she was talking about was, had dealt with his fair share of complicated situations in the past. So of course, being the good natured soul he was, decided to help. “Well, Lain, I’m Kiryu. Let’s see if I can lend you a hand.”
Lain hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Alright, Kiryu-san. I guess I could use some help. There’s something strange happening with the arcade machines here. They’re connected to the Wired, and I need to figure out what’s going on. Let's go inside.”
Together, they entered Club SEGA. The sound of arcade games and the chatter of excited gamers filled the air. Lain led Kiryu to the back of the arcade, where a group of rowdy teens were causing a ruckus around a broken game machine.
“That’s where the problem is,” Lain said, pointing at the machine. “Something’s off.”
Kiryu sighed. Judging by the demeanor of the delinquents in front of him, the odds of him approaching them not ending in a fight were nearly zero. “Alright, I'll sort this out.” he muttered in anticipation, readying an intimidating stance.
Approaching the group, Kiryu put on his most intimidating face. “Hey, you kids. Move aside. I need to have a look at this machine.”
One of the teens, trying to look tough, stepped forward and laughed in Kiryu's face. “And who do you think you are, old man?”
Kiryu's eyes narrowed as he cracked his knuckles. “I’m the guy who’s about to make you regret that attitude. I'll only say it one more time. Move.”
The teens exchanged nervous glances before reluctantly stepping back. Kiryu turned to Lain. “There, now let’s take a look.”
Lain connected her device to the arcade machine, her fingers dancing over the keyboard. “This is strange... There’s some kind of anomaly in the data stream.”
Kiryu, clearly out of his depth with technical matters, nodded sagely. “Uh-huh. So, can you fix it?”
Lain nodded slightly. “I think so. Just need to reset the connection.”
Kiryu watched as Lain worked, her focus unwavering. Within minutes, she had resolved the issue, and the machine hummed back to life.
“There we go,” Lain said, satisfied. “That should fix the immediate problem. But we need to dig deeper to find out what’s causing these anomalies.”
Kiryu nodded. “Alright. What’s the next step?”
Lain looked thoughtful. “We should head to an internet café. I need to access some deeper networks to get more information.”

Inside the arcade, a group of rowdy teens were causing a ruckus around a broken game machine. Lain pointed at the machine. “That’s where the problem is. It’s connected to the Wired, and something’s off.”
Kiryu sighed. “Alright, let’s sort this out.”
Approaching the group, Kiryu put on his most intimidating face. “Hey, you kids. Move aside.”
One of the teens, trying to look tough, stepped forward. “And who do you think you are, old man?”
Kiryu cracked his knuckles. “I’m the guy who’s about to make you regret that attitude.”
A few minutes and a flurry of punches later, the teens were sprawled out, nursing their wounds and quickly scrambling to leave as they cried for their mommies.

With the arcade machine issue resolved, Lain suggested they head to a nearby internet café to dig deeper into the Wired anomaly. As they entered, Kiryu looked around, slightly bewildered by the sea of computers and gamers.
“Wow, this place is... something,” he muttered.
Lain, ever focused, quickly found an open computer. “Kiryu-san, I need to access some deeper networks. Can you keep an eye out for anything suspicious?”
Kiryu nodded. “Sure thing.”
As Lain began her deep dive into the Wired, Kiryu noticed a shady character lingering by the snack bar. The man was trying to discreetly slip something into a customer’s drink.
Kiryu approached him, his voice low and menacing. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”
The shady man turned, sneering. “And who’s gonna stop me? You?”
Kiryu’s fist answered the question for him. A few quick punches later, the man was out cold, and the café manager was calling the police.
Lain looked up from her screen, a rare smile replacing her usual deadpan expression. “You’re pretty good at this, Kiryu-san.”
Kiryu shrugged. “Just another day in Kamurocho.”
---
Back at the café, Lain finally cracked the anomaly. “Kiryu-san, it’s some kind of virus affecting the Wired. It’s spreading throughout these arcade machines and causing disruptions.”
Kiryu scratched his head. “A... virus? Can we stop it?”
Lain nodded. “I can upload a countermeasure, but I’ll need your help to get to the main server room. It's a few blocks away from here. lead the way”
Kiryu grinned, admiring Lain's bravery. She reminded him of when he was a child in a way he couldn't explain.. “Lead the way.”
They navigated through the maze of back alleys until they reached the server room in a nondescript building. As they entered, they were confronted by a group of hackers, who were clearly not pleased to see them.
“Who the hell are you people? You’re not supposed to be here. Get them!” The lead hacker sneered.
Kiryu stepped forward, cracking his knuckles once more. “Looks like we’re in for a fight, Lain.”
The ensuing battle was a whirlwind of punches, kicks, and Kiryu’s signature moves. Lain, despite her small stature, managed to distract and outmaneuver a few hackers with her quick thinking and agility.
With the hackers subdued, Lain quickly accessed the main server. “Alright, uploading the countermeasure now... Done!”
---
With the virus neutralized, Kiryu and Lain walked back to the bustling streets of Kamurocho. Lain looked up at Kiryu, her eyes reflecting a mix of gratitude and admiration. “Thank you, Kiryu-san. I don't think I could've done it without you.”
Kiryu smiled warmly. “You did great, Lain. If you ever need help again, you know where to find me.”
Lain nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. “I will. And maybe next time, I can teach you a bit more about the Wired. I could tell you didn't really have a clue as to what i was talking about.”
Kiryu chuckled. “Got me there. But yeah, I’d like that. You stay safe, Lain.”
As they parted ways, both knew that this was the beginning of an unusual but strong friendship, forged in the chaos of Kamurocho’s streets and the mysterious depths of the Wired. In the days that followed, Kiryu found himself more intrigued by the digital world that Lain had introduced him to. And Lain, for her part, felt a new sense of confidence and connection, knowing that in the physical world, she had a powerful ally.
Their misadventures were far from over, and in a city as unpredictable as Kamurocho, the Dragon and the Wired girl were bound to find themselves in many more strange and humorous situations.
