A Message to the Next Cure

Summary:

You are an ordinary middle schooler living in Pikarigaoka. One day, you are playing in the park when you come across a weird patch of dirt. Curiosity takes over and you find yourself digging in that area. You find a metal box that contains a pink crystal and a letter.

This is what was on that letter.

My contribution for Habatake! | A Pretty Cure 20th Anniversary Zine.

Work Text:

If you're reading this message, you found the crystal I have hid away for whoever will become the next Cure. I received it shortly after defeating the Phantom Empire from someone I might never see again. I was originally planning on giving this to someone precious, but I ended up giving him a far more special gemstone on a ring. Besides, what could be more precious than someone fighting to protect the world? I'm sure it's in better hands with you. I can't predict everything that will come your way, but I want to help with whatever threats you face by sharing what I already know.

You're never alone. There's always someone who can help you out. Maybe it's another Cure, or a close friend from your childhood. Or in my case, both. You won't know if your new best friend will run into your life when you're not expecting it. Support and learn from each other, whether it's practicing new attacks or listening to their troubles. That's what friends are for! 😁

You shouldn't be rash in your choices and motives. Even if your heart is in the right place, you may not have the full picture. I mean, maybe things aren't as severe as you initially thought and you end up exaggerating things that aren't a big deal at all. (Whoopsie!) Someone who you considered an enemy might not be that bad deep down. If their hearts are too far gone, remind them of the people they once were. Have faith in yourself and your abilities without insisting that you're always right.

And finally, it's okay to let your feelings take control. When I became a Cure, I was told to never fall in love with the assumption that the villains could take advantage of them. But if I let other people determine my path, I never would have taken a chance on the person I'm about to marry or even saved him from hatred I indirectly caused. You're the only one who can make that choice, so don't let anyone take it away from you. That love is your greatest strength. Don't try to suppress it, or you might find yourself risking those closest to you.

It's been years since I became a Cure, but I'll always remember my friends as I step into a new life. I'm not sure what kind of Cure you'll be, or even if being a Cure has changed after all these years. Is your fairy mascot a... I think ours were pandas? We came across a bird before! And their team had someone who played a beautiful song on the violin. Our team had—Sorry, I'm getting off track with nostalgia and what-ifs!

I hope these words serve as inspiration for you to find your own way, no matter what kind of Cure you end up becoming. You might even be one who defies fate and become a new hero in your own right. I just know you'll make sure Pikarigaoka will be full of ultra happiness!
