Chapter 1: from snow to city lights

Chapter Text

The small cottage in Snowchester was a sanctuary of warmth and love, nestled amidst the pristine snow-covered landscape. Tommy was just three years old, and his world was one of innocent wonder. Techno, his older brother, at eight, was a calm and thoughtful child, already showing signs of the fierce intelligence that would define his later years. Snowchester was a town seemingly plucked out of a fairy tale, where the air was perpetually crisp, and the snow blanketed the ground year-round.

Snowchester was a quaint, happy town, where everyone knew each other, and the sense of community was strong. The town was perpetually cold, with a layer of frost clinging to the windowpanes, and snowflakes dancing in the air. But the cold was never harsh; it was a gentle reminder of the town’s charm. The streets were lined with picturesque cottages, their roofs heavy with snow, and the scent of pine and burning wood filled the air.

Inside their cottage, the warmth of the fireplace cast a golden glow, illuminating the laughter and joy that filled the rooms. Tommy’s giggles were a constant background music, a sweet sound that brought smiles to his family’s faces. Techno was often seen with a book in hand, his eyes filled with curiosity as he absorbed the world of knowledge and adventure. Yet, he was always ready to put down his book and play with his little brother, their bond growing stronger with each passing day.

One of the family’s favourite pastimes was playing hockey on the frozen lake near their home. It was a tradition that had started long before Tommy was born, and one that would continue for years to come. On a typical winter afternoon, the three of them would bundle up in thick coats, scarves, and mittens, their breath visible in the chilly air.

Phil, their father, was the heart of these outings. His energy was infectious, and his love for his children was clear in every moment they spent together. He would laugh as he helped Tommy lace up his tiny skates, the little boy bouncing with excitement. Techno, already adept on the ice, would patiently wait, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.

The frozen lake was a magical place. The ice was smooth and clear, reflecting the pale winter sky. Snow-covered trees surrounded the lake, their branches heavy with white. The sound of skates cutting through the ice, mingled with laughter and shouts of joy, created a symphony of happiness.

Phil was a skilled skater, and he would often swoop down and lift Tommy into the air, spinning him around as the little boy squealed with delight. Techno, though more reserved, would join in the fun, showing his younger brother how to spin. His movements were precise and graceful, while Tommy’s were often sloppy, usually ending with the boy on his bum. But he giggled, nonetheless.

These moments were the essence of their childhood. The cold biting at their cheeks, the warmth of their love keeping them cozy, and the pure joy of being together. They would stay on the ice until the sun began to set, the sky turning shades of pink and orange, the cold intensifying. Reluctantly, they would head back to their cottage, cheeks rosy, hearts full.

As the years passed, the family continued to build cherished memories in Snowchester. Tommy, now five, had started school, and Techno, at ten, was excelling in his studies. Their bond grew even stronger, with Techno often helping Tommy with his homework or reading bedtime stories to him. Their father, Phil, stayed the cornerstone of their happiness, always finding ways to make their days brighter.

Winter in Snowchester was not just a season; it was a way of life. The townspeople embraced the snow and cold, turning the harsh weather into a celebration of community and togetherness. The annual Winter Festival was a highlight of the year, a time when the entire town came together to enjoy ice skating, sledding, and hot cocoa by the bonfire. Tommy and Techno looked forward to this event with great anticipation, eager to join their friends in the festivities.

The festival was held in the town square, which was transformed into a winter wonderland. Strings of lights twinkled in the trees, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and cheerful music. Vendors sold handmade crafts, and the smell of freshly baked goods wafted through the air. Phil would take Tommy and Techno from stall to stall, letting them pick out a few treats and souvenirs to remember the day by.

One year, when Tommy was six and Techno was eleven, the boys decided to enter the ice sculpture contest. It was a daunting task, but with Phil’s encouragement and guidance, they set out to create a masterpiece. They chose to carve a dragon, inspired by one of Techno’s favourite books. Phil helped them gather the tools and materials they needed, and the three of them spent hours working on their creation.

Techno’s attention to detail and steady hands made him the perfect sculptor, while Tommy’s enthusiasm and imagination brought the dragon to life. They laughed and teased each other as they worked, their breath visible in the cold air. Phil provided moral support, offering suggestions and helping with the more challenging parts of the sculpture.

As the day of the contest arrived, their dragon stood proudly among the other entries. It was a magnificent sight, with intricate scales and a fierce expression. The judges were impressed, and the boys were thrilled when they won first place. The pride in Phil’s eyes as he hugged his sons was a memory they would cherish forever.

Life in Snowchester was idyllic, but it wasn’t without its challenges. The winters were long and harsh, and there were times when the roads were impassable due to heavy snowfall. Phil, always resourceful, would make sure they had everything they needed to weather the storms. He stocked up on supplies, made sure the fireplace was always well-maintained, and even built a small greenhouse to grow fresh vegetables during the winter months.

Techno admired his father’s ingenuity and determination. He often helped Phil with various projects around the house, learning valuable skills that would serve him well in the future. Tommy, still young and full of energy, preferred to play and explore, but he too was beginning to appreciate the importance of hard work and resilience.

The bond between the brothers was unbreakable. They shared secrets, dreams, and countless adventures. Whether they were building snow forts, hunting for the perfect Christmas tree, or simply sitting by the fire reading, their love for each other was clear in every moment. Phil’s guidance and support fostered a sense of security and belonging that would stay with them throughout their lives.

When Tommy turned eight and Techno was thirteen, Phil decided to take them on a special trip. They had heard stories about a legendary frozen waterfall deep in the forest, a place of breathtaking beauty and wonder. Phil wanted to show his sons this magical place, a hidden gem that few had ever seen.

They set out early one morning, bundled up against the cold, with backpacks filled with provisions. The journey was long and challenging, but Phil’s confidence and experience reassured the boys. They followed a narrow trail through the snow-covered trees, the silence of the forest broken only by the crunch of their footsteps and the occasional chirp of a bird.

As they ventured deeper into the forest, the landscape became more enchanting. Icicles hung from the branches like crystal chandeliers, and the sunlight filtering through the trees cast a golden glow on the snow. Tommy’s eyes widened with wonder, and even Techno, usually more reserved, couldn’t help but smile at the beauty around them.

After several hours of hiking, they finally reached the frozen waterfall. It was a sight to behold, a towering cascade of ice that sparkled in the sunlight. The water had frozen in mid-flow, creating intricate patterns and shapes that seemed almost otherworldly. Phil watched with pride as his sons took in the breathtaking scene, their faces filled with awe and wonder.

They spent the day exploring the area, taking pictures and marvelling at the natural beauty. Phil shared stories about the history of the waterfall and the legends that surrounded it. He taught the boys how to build a shelter and start a fire, essential skills for anyone venturing into the wilderness. They roasted marshmallows and shared stories around the campfire, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

As the sun began to set, they reluctantly made their way back to the cottage. The journey home was filled with laughter and excitement as they recounted the day’s adventures. Phil’s heart swelled with pride, knowing that he had given his sons a gift they would treasure forever.

Years passed, and the boys grew older. Tommy, now eleven, was a bundle of energy and enthusiasm. Techno, at sixteen, was taller, more serious, but still deeply caring. Their life in Snowchester had been idyllic, but change was on the horizon. Phil had found a new job in Manberg, a bustling city far removed from the quiet charm of Snowchester. The family packed their belongings, the excitement of a new adventure mingling with the sadness of leaving their beloved hometown.

The drive to Manberg was filled with chatter and laughter. Tommy’s excitement was palpable, his imagination running wild with thoughts of their new home. “Do you think it’ll have a big backyard?” he asked, his eyes wide with anticipation.

Techno, always the realist, smiled gently. “We’ll have to see, Tommy. But I’m sure it’ll be nice.” Despite his calm demeanour, Techno couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness at leaving behind the only home he had ever known.

Phil, from the driver’s seat, kept the mood light. “We’re going to have so many new adventures! Think of all the unfamiliar places to explore, and the new friends you’ll make.” His optimism was infectious, and even Techno couldn’t help but feel a spark of excitement.

As they approached Manberg, the landscape began to change. The snowy fields and quiet forests gave way to tall buildings and busy streets. The hustle and bustle of the city was a stark contrast to the serene silence of Snowchester.

Tommy pressed his face against the window, his eyes wide with wonder at the sight of so many people and so much activity. Their new house was a small, three-bedroom home in a crowded neighbourhood. It was nothing like their spacious cottage in Snowchester.

The disappointment was palpable as they pulled up to the house. Tommy’s excitement dimmed slightly as he looked at the modest home, so different from what he had imagined. Inside, the house felt cramped and unfamiliar.

The rooms were smaller, and the sounds of the city filtered through the walls, a constant reminder of how different their new life would be.

Tommy’s room was tiny, with just enough space for a bed and a small desk. Techno’s room was slightly larger, but still a far cry from the spacious room he had enjoyed in Snowchester.

Phil did his best to keep their spirits up. “It’s not so bad, is it? We’ll make it our own. It just needs a bit of love and care.” He ruffled Tommy’s hair, his smile reassuring. Tommy tried to be brave, but the sadness was hard to ignore. He missed the snow, the lake, and the endless space to run and play. Techno, always the protective older brother, put his arm around Tommy’s shoulders. “We’ll be okay, Tommy. We’ll make this place home.” Despite the first disappointment, the family began to settle into their new life. They made slight changes to the house, adding personal touches that made it feel more like home. The bond between the brothers grew even stronger as they navigated this new chapter together.

The city, with all its noise and chaos, couldn’t dim the light of their love and the memories of Snowchester that they carried in their hearts. The move to Manberg was a challenge, but it was also an opportunity for growth and new experiences. Tommy and Techno, with their unbreakable bond, would face this new adventure together, their hearts filled with the warmth and happiness of their childhood in Snowchester.
