Work Text:
My fingers tightened around the loop of what was in my pocket. My buddy had already started his bike and got into his heart, I wasn't sure if I could do it. I let go of the loop and put my helmet on, getting on my bike and riding away from the garage. I could hear my heart pounding, and I knew he was feeling the same. We didn't expect this to happen, we didn't even know why it happened. We left the road and went onto the trail through the trees, I was in front of him, but when the trail opened up, he was at my side again. We stopped at a cliff face, got off our bikes, and sat next to each other. “How did it come to this?” He asked, looking at the waterfall, I shrugged and turned to him “I don't know. I still can't wrap my head around it. I mean, I didn't think she was capable of that” I sighed and threw a rock in front of me, watching it fall into the water. “We both didn't know, but we must face it now, no matter how hard.” He sighed and lay on his back, my fingers found the object again, grabbing the loop and pulling out a rabbit’s foot. “Turns out it did have luck” he laughed, it was a bittersweet moment. “I'm just glad we made it out.” I laid down as well, holding the charm up “You think it'll save us again?” I asked, “Who knows, usually, I don't believe in stuff like that but, after what we just experienced.” He looked at me and reached for the charm, brushing his fingers against the fur “Maybe we should return it” I said “Yeah, maybe it'll be better for someone else” he sat up and I did too. We both took the charm and let it fall into the water beneath us, a weight lifted off our shoulders. “Oh I'm exhausted” I groaned and collapsed back onto the ground after moving away from the edge, my buddy following and doing the same. “You said it” he laughed. “Seriously, how could she?” I closed my eyes “I don't know man, but whatever she was, is gone now.” Both of us lay there for almost an hour before getting back up and getting onto our bikes. “Let's go home,” he said, and we were off, a cliche ending with the sunset, but welcome still.
