Summary
In the wake of the fateful Ides of March, the adopted son and heir of Julius Caesar, Gaius Octavianus—now called Gaius Julius Caesar—is determined to avenge the death of his father. He will stop at nothing to restore the legacy of Caesar and claim his rightful inheritance, as he believes it to be: Rome.
Valeria, the only child of a wealthy and influential Roman senator, is a dutiful daughter with a profound loyalty to her father and to the Roman Republic. Though loath to engage in the bloodletting arena of Roman politicking, Valeria finds herself thrust headlong into it.
When tragedy befalls her, Valeria is left with no recourse but to seek out Gaius Julius, whose recklessness, arrogance, and callousness reviles and vexes her endlessly. As violence, treason, and conflict descend upon Rome, Valeria finds herself drawn closer to Gaius Julius—that thread between them, gone taut—than she ever fathomed. Gaius Julius, perhaps, is not quite so cruel, or vengeful, or despicable as she once thought. Valeria, perhaps, may not be cursed to reap the foul harvest for which she seems destined.
Or perhaps the Fates are as pitiless as they seem.
