Chapter Text
There was an app.
Look at the picture. Swipe right if it’s a yes. Swipe left if it’s a no.
To be clear, Ryu Sunjae wasn’t the one who downloaded it. No, he was just the idiot who kindly, mindlessly handed his phone to Baek Inhyuk without a thought when his friend asked to borrow it to “look something up.” Really, Sunjae thought the idiot was checking out his village on Clash of Clans in some sad form of cheating before deciding to raid him. Instead, the moron was wasting his data and setting up his account on this goddamn dating app.
Sunjae sighed, eyeing the flame-shaped icon for the app, weighing the pros and cons of actually opening it.
He was alone in his room, in the dark and in his bed. The door was shut and his Shi-oh Hyung was in the dining room of their shared apartment guzzling a pot of hazelnut-flavored coffee while grading assignment after assignment, drowning out the rest of the world.
No one would have to know, pointed out a voice in the back of his head. Not that Sunjae heard voices, of course. That would be simply ridiculous—almost as ridiculous as this dating app!
“Ugh.” Sunjae turned over, still staring at the screen contemplatively.
But really, no one would know…
So he opened it—grudgingly, to be clear. Inhyuk had already set it up, photos of him and everything, and all that was left to do was search. He swiped through a good number of people before deciding to change the settings.
Show me: Women
Limit search to: 5 km.
Show ages: 22 to 23.
He smirked slightly, as if to challenge the app with his small range. “Now what?”
But then the app seemed to still have plenty of people to show him. He actually even came across a few girls he knew.
“Of course, Lee Hyunjoo is on this thing.”
Luckily enough, it worked so that a girl could only send him a message if he liked her, which, thus far, wasn’t happening. Photo after photo, girl after girl, Sunjae swiped left until suddenly he paused.
“her hair…”
He squinted at the screen, wondering if the whole lying in bed whilst using phone sideways thing was getting to him. But no. Her hair was, in fact, has streaks of purple and pink, teal, blue, with a smallest bit of yellow and red peeking from the bottom layer of her hair.
He pressed the info button to open her profile and was pleased to find four photos to examine.
One: At some party. A shoulder length bob with those rainbow colors. An oversized black cardigan over a dress. A red cup in hand. A bright, beautiful dimpled smile. Got the same dimple as mine, he thought.
Two: A sunny day at the beach. Long hair swept over one shoulder showing those highlight strands. Gold rimmed aviators. A plain white crop top. Her lower half covered in sand arranged to make her look like a mermaid.
Three: At a park. A white beret with locks of those colorful hair poking out from under. A red peacoat. A venti-sized beverage. Rosy cheeks from the cold.
Four: At Yeonseo University Café. Black, thick-rimmed glasses. Hair in a messy bun. A denim button up top. A stack of books sitting beside a pink laptop. A pen being balanced between her nose and her upper lip.
Sunjae wasn’t shallow, but he couldn’t help but be interested by her hair. Likewise, a picture could tell a person a lot of things! Being at a party meant she wasn’t a hermit. The mermaid stint meant she was fun. The winter picture showed that she, uh, liked coffee—so did he. And then being at Yeonseo meant she probably took school seriously.
Right.
Sunjae couldn’t help but be surprised to see that not only did they apparently have a large number of shared interests, but a total of 26 mutual friends as well.
Thank God for social media, Sunjae thought as he scanned the first few names on the list of people, they both knew: Shin Sae-mi. Yeo Joo-da. Kim Taesung. Baek Kyung. Shi-oh.
Deciding that this would be his first “yes” for the app, Sunjae went back and immediately, out of habit, swiped left, prompting the app to stamp a bright red “NOPE” over the girl’s interesting hair and bright smile.
“No.”
And, right away, her picture faded out of sight.
“NO.”
And another girl took her place.
“SHIT. NO. COME BACK.”
He hadn’t even remembered to look at her name and now she was gone forever.
note: just a short first chapter just to check interest from subeoms 🥰
