Work Text:
Sakito wasn't sure what to think of these people. He had been on his own for so long. How did one even act around other humans? He had long since forgotten what it was like to be around anyone similar to him.
It didn't help that these people -strangers, even- knew his past as well as they did. He was exposed to them in a way he wasn't ready to be. The last thing Sakito had wanted was for anyone to know his past and decide to pity him.
And yet...
Sakito had been taking a walk around the town. He figured he might as well learn its layout if he was staying here for a while. Along the way, he had passed a park with some children playing together. The sight had made him pause. His heart began to pound.
"You never got to be like that?" A voice startled him from behind.
Taiya stood beside him now, glancing over at the scene. Sakito regarded him warily, unsure of his intentions. He really hated this man already. He was always right there, pushing just the right buttons.
"Why does it matter? That's the past." Sakito replied coldly.
"The past shapes our future." Taiya replied.
Sakito sighed. Here he went again. Getting on his nerves. Why couldn't he just drop it? Did he not get the hint this wasn't something he wanted to talk about?
"You haven't moved on from the past as much as you say you have." Taiya continued at his silence. "I can see it still haunts you."
"Why do you think I left Earth...?" Sakito responded quietly, "So I didn't have to be reminded of what I never had."
Taiya was silent for a while. Sakito hoped he would leave, but knew that was unlikely. He was going to say more about this. Taiya didn't seem like the type to drop a conversation like this.
"You may have never had those things in the past, but you can now." Taiya finally spoke again.
Sakito gave him a wary glance. "Just because I agreed to help you doesn't mean I trust you that much. You already know more than I want."
"I know we've had our disagreements, but my offer will stand. I can help you. We can help you. You just need to let us."
"You talk big. I hope you're prepared for a long battle. If you think I'll let my walls down that quickly, you're wrong." Sakito warned. "No one ever listened to me. No one ever helped me. So why should I bother? What do I have to prove you all wouldn't go back on it once I do say something?"
There he went again... saying more about his past and his trauma than he planned to. Why wasn't he keeping his guard up around Taiya? He had very little proof he could trust him with this stuff and yet he kept blabbing it all out.
"I see..." Taiya nodded to him. "We'll show you that you can trust us. You won't be left behind."
"You do talk big. Let's see if you can keep that up." Sakito said. He then held his hand up and walked off.
The pounding heart in his chest had only increased during that entire conversation. He needed to get away. Needed to get a grip on himself again before he said anything more.
He couldn't trust them. As much as he wanted to... as much as his heart screamed to open up... he couldn't. It was too hard to trust anyone after how long it had been. He'd rather be cold than get hurt again.
Maybe one day he could learn to trust again...
