“Mattsun-san, I really like you!” A short black haired girl said, handing Mattsun something that looked like a bento with a heart shaped card on the top.
“Oh! I’m sorry Akaria-san, but I don’t like you in that way.” Mattsun replied, handing Akaria the bento back
“What? Why?” Akaria said, looking as if she was about to cry.
“It’s not that you’re ugly or anything, I just have a boyfriend.” Mattsun blurted out, covering his mouth at the last part.
“WHO?” Akaria gasped, tears streaming down her face.
“Takahiro-san,” Mattsun said.
“Really?.” Akaria questioned.
“Yeah.” Mattsun replied sheepishly.
“I don’t believe you. You don’t seem like the kind of person who likes boys,” Akaria scoffed." You probably said that to find a reason to reject me.”
“Don’t think that highly of yourself, I am actually dating Takahiro. Maybe if you’d have asked me earlier in the year I woulda said yes.” Mattsun stated.
Mattsun turned on his heels and walked away toward the gym where some of his fellow teammates were getting ready for afternoon practice. As he turns into the gym locker room a loud piercing sound rings out through the locker room.
“MATTSUN” Oikawa shouted in a sing-songy voice.
“Shut up trashykawa!” Iwaizumi said, hitting Oikawa in the back of his head.
“Iwa that’s not very nice.” Oikawa whined, rubbing the back of his head.
“Why are you shouting Kawa?” Mattsun asked, rolling his eyes.
“I’ll have you know I was not shouting I was serenading you with my beautiful voice.” Oikawa replied, placing a hand on his chest in mock pain.
“Yeah, yeah. You called my name, what do you want?” Mattsun urged, becoming impatient.
“Oh! Right! I saw that you were talking to Akaria, what were you guys talking about?” Oikawa questioned.
A shot of heat spread through Mattsun’s body as Oikawa finished his sentence. Oh no! He saw me talking to Akaria. Why did it have to be Oikawa out of all people.
“Toru you can’t be in people’s business like that.” Iwaizumi replied, lightly shoving Oikawa’s shoulder.
“It’s fine Iwa. She asked me out.” Mattsun said, rocking back and forth on his heels trying to seem nonchalant.
“Ouu!! What did you say? Did you say yes? Where are you taking her?” Oikawa questioned.
“I said no.” Mattsun stated, shutting down Oikawa’s mindless rambling.
“Oh?” Oikawa and Iwaizumi remarked.
“What? Why? Akaria is so nice and she really likes you.” Oikawa said.
“Well, one (1) I don’t like her and two (2) I told her I had a boyfriend.” Mattsun said, looking away from Oikawa’s judging eyes.
“Oh! Wait? You have a boyfriend? Who? Did you and Maki finally get together?” Oikawa asked, the excitement in his voice rising at the last question.
“What do you mean finally?” Mattsun sorta kinda hissed.
“Woah chill dude I was just asking a question.” Oikawa said, taking a step back, throwing his hands up in defense.
“Sorry. No we’re not dating but I did tell Akaria that we were.” Mattsun said, rushing out the last part.
“Why would you tell her that?” Iwaizumi questioned.
“Well I rejected her at first then she asked me why, like who does that, so I had to think of something and I had to think of it quickly cause she started crying.” Mattsun explained.
“So lemme get this straight, the first thing you thought of was to tell her that you’re dating Maki instead of just telling her the truth?” Iwaizumi questioned.
“Ugh you guys are asking too many questions. I don’t know why I said it but I did.” Mattsun replied.
“If you think that we are asking too many questions, imagine how many questions Takahiro will have.” Oikawa snorted.
“Speaking of Maki, what are you planning on saying to him?” Iwaizumi questioned.
Mattsun didn’t even think about how Maki would react to any of this. I just hope he understands and isn’t too mad at me.
“I don’t even know I haven’t planned this far ahead. I mean she just asked me not even 10 minutes ago.” Mattsun sighed.
“Coach is here, ” Maki said, walking over to his group of friends. “Why do you guys look like you’re having a cult meeting?”
“Uhm.” Mattsun blurted out.
“We were just talking about how crazy Toru’s fan girls are. I thought they would die down now that we’re dating but I guess not.” Iwaizumi replied.
“I know right one of them came up to me and asked if I could give her Kawa’s phone number.” Maki said, rolling his eyes.
“Was it Nahariya?” Oikawa asked.
“Yeah? How did you know?” Maki questioned.
“She asked me earlier when I was walking to Iwa’s locker. I told her no and that I was taken but she won’t give it a rest.” Oikawa huffed.
“We should probably get to practice. I don’t think Coach would be too happy with us standing here and gossiping.” Maki chuckled.
Maki and Mattsun walk into the locker room and Mattsun can’t stop thinking about what Oikawa had said earlier. What did he mean by finally? Does Maki like me too? Nah, I’m probably reading too deep into it.
A cold hand had touched Mattsun’s shoulder snapping him back to reality.
“Woah, chill dude. What’s with you today? You’re so jumpy and you were zoning out. Are you okay?” Maki asked.
“Oh yeah I just have a lot on my mind, sorry. “ Mattsun replied.
“You don’t have to apologize dude. What were you thinking about?” Maki said.
“Oh uh the test that I had in my English class, I’m pretty sure I failed.” Mattsun replied, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Oh man, I totally bombed that test too. It was so hard like how am I supposed to know what literary devices they use in “The Cat in The Hat”? Maki laughed.
“Literally like how is any of this gonna help me when I’m in the real world.” Mattsun replied.
After they finished talking and exited the locker room everything that was bothering Mattsun came rushing back.
