You can’t read someone’s mind if there are no thoughts in it. And you can’t stop someone from acting rashly when you cannot predict what they are about to do. Like a wild animal jumping from behind a bush to conquer its prey, Aiura Mikoto’s fist flew directly into the jaw of a giggling, hair-twirling underclassman girl who was trying a bit too hard to capture Saiki’s attention.
“Why did you do that?” Saiki asked, looking with mild disappointment at the girl’s body, crumpled on the linoleum floor of the high school hallway.
Aiura scratched the back of her neck. “Like, idk. I guess something just came over me.”
“You know you don’t have to be so territorial. It’s not like I’m up for grabs.” Saiki pulled out a banana-like club and hit the girl in the head once again, a bit more gently than Aiura’s punch had been. With the touch of his hand, he pulled her to stand.
“Wh-what happened?” the girl asked, looking around in confusion. “Why was I on the floor?”
“Must be your blood sugar or something,” Aiura suggested, eyeing her with an eyebrow lifted in irritation. The girl was still clutching Saiki’s arm. “Maybe you should leave and go to the nurse. Before you pass out again.”
Saiki could see the invisible hackles raised on Aiura’s neck.
The girl tried to convey through her facial expression that she wanted Saiki to escort her. Saiki knew this was her desire, of course; reading her mind revealed her wishes. But he just continued to stare blankly until the girl gave up and stalked off to the nurse’s office alone.
Aiura clicked her tongue. Bitch, she thought. “This is why you need to tell people that we’re dating.”
“No. This is why you need to curb your jealousy.”
Aiura smirked. “Nah. I know you think it’s hot. You’re totes blushing right now.”
Saiki pressed his lips together into a tight frown, noting with reluctance the heat in his cheeks. “Regardless, you can’t just go around punching people.”
Aiura shook her fist out. “Yah. You’re right. I might break a nail.”
It seemed there would be no lesson learned by Aiura that day. Oh well. Seeing her so possessive was kind of amusing, after all.
