Luz grabbed a can of tomato sauce off the shelf and lightly tossed it into her shopping basket. She looked down at her list. “Spaghetti sauce, check. Toilet paper, check. Bread, check. Cake mix, deli meat, frozen tacos, blah blah blah, all checked. Only one thing left…” At very bottom of the list was an item mostly reserved for Luz’s mom: pickles.
She looked down the isle to where the pickles usually were, but it appeared empty. Upon closer inspection, she saw a single jar remained at the back of the box, a Jumbo Sized Bargain Bundle pickle jar. It was expensive, but it was all they had. Luz shrugged and reached her arm to grab the enormous jar.
Right before her fingers made contact, a hand with black nail polish brushed by and grabbed the jar. “I was here first!” Luz grunted, stretching the law few inches to grab the jar and attempt to wrestle it from this rude shopper.
“This jar is mine!” The other person replied, her cold hands having a firm grip around the glass. As the two of them tossled for it, pulling back and forth, the other shopper’s hand slipped.
Luz yelped in surprise, the sheer momentum of her pull sending her reeling backwards onto the ground. As she was falling, the jar slipped out of her hand and hit her square in the chest, completely shattering on impact. Pickles and the related juices spill all over Luz’s hoodie.
“Oh, titan, I’m so sorry!” Luz looked up at her adversary. She was… really cute, actually. She was tall, with pale skin, and deep yellow eyes currently filled with worry. Her hair was dyed a brilliant shade of purple.
The stranger reached her hand out to Luz. Begrudgingly, Luz accepted it. She didn’t want to put her hand on the ground to get up for fear of impaling herself on the shattered glass.
Luz felt herself blush slightly as the purple haired girl pulled her up, their faces mere inches apart. “I’m really sorry about that, I don’t know what I was thinking!” The stranger cried.
“Oh, it’s whatever.” Luz replied. She got messy all the time while out adventuring with Eda.
“Here, let me buy you some new clothes.” The stranger said, still holding Luz’s hand.
“Oh, you really don’t have to-“
“No, please, its my fault that cute hoodie you have on is ruined now. I’m Amity, by the way.”
Luz let go of Amity’s hand and picked her shopping basket up off the ground. “Luz.” she replied.
“Well, let’s head over to the apparel section.” Amity said, already walking off.
“Oh, alright. If you insist.” Luz followed.
At the clothes, Amity held up a nice white and purple hoodie. “This one has cat ears on it! You seem like a cat person.” She said.
Luz smiled. “Yeah, I am actually! How could you tell?”
“You have a cat sticker on your phone. Here, try it on! You’d look really cute in it!”
Luz felt herself blush again. “I’ll go over to the fitting rooms.”
“Oh, wait. Take these too.” Amity handed her a nice pair of black leggings and some jean shorts. “It’ll go well with that hoodie.” She gave a little wink.
Luz turned around quickly. “Alrighty then, I’ll be right back!” She said, her voice cracking. She was blushing hard, and smiling like an idiot.

Luz emerged from the changing room, her old wet clothes in a shopping bag. “It looks great!” Amity said, approaching Luz.
Luz smiled as she felt her cheeks redden. “Thanks.” She said.
“Here, let me just…” Amity reached over and ran her fingers along the back of Luz’s neck, sending chills down her spine. Luz heard a small popping sound. Amity held the hoodie’s tag in front of her.
“Ah, right.” Luz said. She ripped the tags off the shorts and leggings. “Are you sure you want to buy these for me?”
Amity nodded. “Absolutely. It’s only fair after I ruined your old ones.” She held out her hand for the other tags.
Luz handed them over as the two of them walked up to the front.
Amity approached the cashier. “Hi, I accidentally broke a pickle jar on this lady’s clothes. She put new ones on, I have the tags right here. Along with my groceries.” She began emptying her basket onto the conveyor belt.
The pink-haired cashier nodded. “Alright, that’s fine. Do you want me to throw these tags away?”
Amity looked at Luz. “Yeah, that’s fine.” She replied.
After both Amity and Luz had checked out, they stood together in front of the building. “Hey, sorry about all that.” Amity said.
“You don’t need to keep apologizing.” Luz said.
Amity nodded in acknowledgment. She looked away from Luz and held up a piece of paper. “Take this.”
As soon as Luz had grabbed the piece of paper from her hand, Amity began power walking down the parking lot. Confused, Luz looked at the piece of paper. It was her number! “Yes!” Luz exclaimed, pumping her fist. She didn’t even have to ask for it!
Luz smiled as she typed the cute girl’s number in her phone. As she was walking back to her car, she froze. She never got any pickles for her mom! Dang it.
