Work Text:

the room went dark, the two men jumped at the sudden black sheet that covered them. one of the men not only jumped, but yelped in surprise.

“um, snipes? did uh- didja turn the light off?” the younger asked, sitting up from the pale bunk.

“mate, you know i don't like sleeping in total darkness,” it was true. sniper hated the dark. he refused to sleep anywhere where he couldn't see his surroundings at all times. “b'sides, the lamp is on the counter, 'couldn't've reached all that way.”

scout climbed off sniper and dropped down from the slim sleeping area. he and sniper had just been drifting off in the campervan, until the small lamp that sniper always kept on suddenly went out.

the runner wobbled to the kitchen area the best he could, nearly tripping on his own shirt that he had left on the floor.

“jer, get yer ass back up here, it's no big deal.” sniper lied. it was a big deal, to him at least. he sat up, trying to adjust to the dark.

“just makin' sure, gimme a sec.” scout fumbled around the counter, trying to find the lamp. he finally found it and pressed the switch.

“nothin'. sorry, big guy, i think the power's out. gonna have to sleep in the dark.” he walked back to the bunk, climbing his way into it.

“well, piss. thanks for tryin' anyway, roo.” the bushman said before letting out an 'old man' grunt when scout climbed over him.

“no prob- oh, sorry.” the little shit loved messing with him.

a few minutes passed and sniper was fully awake. he looked around the camper, the corners were pitch black. he couldn't see them. they felt closer than before, were they closing in? he felt sick. his breaths were irregular and uneven. he started to sweat. could've sworn he saw something in the distance move.

scout could feel his heart beat quicken and immediately sat up. he pulled sniper into a hug.

“it's okay man, there's nothin' there. everything is fine.” he whispered into the crook of sniper's neck. he planted soft kisses to ease his stress

it worked a little, sniper finally hugged back after a while and his breathing slowed down.

“'m sorry, mate. can't stand the dark.” he pulled back from scout.

“i know, mick, it's totally okay. how 'bout you turn around so you don't have to look that way? would that make it easier?” scout held sniper's hands, running his thumbs over the rough skin.

“maybe. i'll try.” he laid down the other way, facing scout, his back towards the rest of the camper. it was slightly better.

scout wrapped his arms around sniper's back, pulling him closer while tangling their legs together.

it took a long while, but sniper was finally able to start dozing off. he looked down at the younger man he was holding so tightly. sniper had never been more thankful to have such an amazing lover.

he didn't remember when, but he soon closed his eyes and immediately fell asleep. scout had fallen asleep long before him, but he didn't care. he was asleep. in the dark. and it was all thanks to that little jackrabbit.
