Work Text:
cavendish knew he was popular, incredibly so. all the women in the marketing department would fawn over a simple glance thrown their way, he could have his pick of the litter… so why did he find himself waking up in bed with trafalgar law? law wasn't even close to cavendish in terms of social standing, where cavendish prefered to be the center of attention law instead shied away. cavendish would excitedly speak with all of his co-workers, engaging in idle chit chat and small talk with a smile on his face, while law on the other hand refused to speak to anyone unless it was necessary. many of their co workers gossipped about how unapproachable he was, he'd scowl when anyone sat next to him during lunch break, sigh in the middle of a conversation and rub his temples before simply walking away, he'd point out every little mistake in documents that were handed to him, he truly was an unlikable guy.
yet cavendish found himself paying attention to law's every movement. the way he would chew on his lip when under a harsh deadline, how law would smile faintly when looking at photos of cute animals, he found himself being drawn to that—for lack of a better word—loser. cavendish had complete and utter confidence in himself, his looks and personality were all top tier, anyone would be lucky to be his partner, law would definitely say yes when cavendish asked him out, i mean who in their right mind would ever reject someone like him? he was perfect, and honestly, law was lucky to have caught his attention, he should be honored!
“what.” law looked at cavendish with a confused and frankly disgusted face. it took him aback but he composed himself quickly, telling himself that law had misheard him, i mean thinking logically, who would have that kind of reaction when being asked out by someone as gorgeous as cavendish? where else would you find someone so magnanimous as to give someone like law a chance to be by his side, a chance to be his lover? cavendish let out a giggle and smiled at law before asking him the question again, “i asked you if you would like to be my boyfriend.” he spoke in a much louder and clearer voice so law definitely heard him properly this time… so why does he still look disgusted?
law put down his mug of beer, barely touched and sighed at cavendish, the same way he would sigh at others in the office who tried to drag him into conversations he had no interest in, but that doesn't make sense. cavendish was different from them, he was the epitome of the perfection law should be jumping at the chance to call cavendish his. why was law treating cavendish as if he was just another nuisance? “look cavendish, i'm not looking to get into anything serious right now. i have a lot of stuff to worry about and having a boyfriend would just make it harder. not to mention that quite frankly, i don't really like you.” cavendish was shocked, his mouth agape, the only thing running through his mind being the 5 words law just had the gall to tell him. “i don't really like you.” he repeated in his head over and over again before letting out a boisterous laugh.
law must just be trying to push him away because he doesn't believe that someone like him could be worthy of cavendish, that's the only logical conclusion. “law, darling, you don't have to be shy. though you may be an antisocial nerd who really needs a complete makeover and honestly probably a lot of therapy, i'm telling you the truth when i tell you that i like you and want to be your boyfriend.” cavendish winked at law and smirked as he swirled his wine around in the glass.
“oh my god.” law huffed as quickly grabbed his mug and chugged down the remaining beer, “listen. i'm not being shy nor am i playing hard to get. i just don't want to date you.” he stood up and shoved a finger in cavendish's face before continuing, “you're self centered, arrogant, annoying and you delude yourself into thinking that everyone is going to love you.” law paused for a moment and then settled back into his seat, his voice once again becoming hushed. “god i'm too fucking stressed.” he paused, looked at cavendish and sighed. “i don't want to be your boyfriend but… i guess i wouldn't mind being friends with benefits. as long as you don't push anything.” cavendish's face lit up and he smirked at law, an incredible idea running through his head.
law was denying his own feelings, he may think that he doesn't want a relationship with cavendish but deep down in his heart he longed for him. cavendish was confident. why else would law suggest the idea of being friends with benefits? cavendish would wait, he would wait patiently until law came to terms with his own feelings. he wouldn't pursue him nor would he push law to date him, but he was sure that the more time they spent together, the more law got acquainted with cavendish's body and every intimate part of him law would be begging cavendish to date him. and when he did cavendish would welcome law with open arms, after all he was kind, he would be understanding of law and his circumstances, in the end law would figure out that he liked cavendish too.
“i won't, i swear on my mother.” law scoffed at the smug look on cavendish's face. “i'll pay for the hotel this time. next time it's on you.”
