Work Text:
Audrey sits in the field near the Enchanted Lake as she nervous fidgets with her dress. She thinks her concern is valid considering she is waiting for Maleficent to show up her the scepter. She never thought that she’d being waiting for the Fae so she could be taught magic.
After her era of being The Queen of Mean she never wanted to touch let alone see that scepter. Yet, after Maleficent telling her that the scepter chose her as its knee Mistress she hadn’t known what to do. She supposed learning to control the scepter couldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Especially if it’s technically hers now.
Footsteps caught her attention and she looks over to see Maleficent herself walking over. Scepter in hand and Audrey feels her heart start to beat quicker. Maybe this wasn’t a good idea, maybe she should back out. No…she should do this and she has to trust that Maleficent won’t let anything bad happen…even if her status of villain or hero is questionable.
She stands up and walks over to the Faerie…still in shock that Maleficent is rather short, Audrey swears she was taller when she appeared three years ago in the castle with the goal of taking over Auradon. Maybe that was just her fear of the faerie making her seem taller back then. She’s surprised when she realizes Maleficent isn’t wearing her headdress and long purple hair flies free…huh. She always assumed Mal dyed her hair purple but going off of Maleficent’s hair being purple she assumes purple hair might just be natural for faeries.
“Are you ready?”
Maleficent asks she comes over with a small smirk on her face as she hands the scepter. The glowing green orb on top of the staff tempting her, calling out to her and she shakes her head. She doesn’t want to become the Queen of Mean again but she has to remember that Maleficent wouldn’t let that happen. Probably…she may not be a villain anymore but she isn’t exactly a ‘hero’.
“I…I think so.”
Audrey says and takes the scepter in her hand and gasps a little as she feels the power of magic flow through her. She carefully holds it like she’s afraid that she’s accidentally going to cast a spell…or curse. Maleficent chuckles a little as she sees how Audrey is holding the scepter.
”It isn’t going to bite you, you know?”
She says with a smirk and Audrey stutters a little, mildly offended by the faerie’s reaction. She jumps a little as Maleficent repositions her hands on the scepter, she tsks a little at her reaction.
“It’s easier to hold and control the movements of it like this. It weighs more than you think.”
Maleficent explains and Audrey gives a nod as she holds the scepter in the position she showed her. Still looking at the scepter like at any moment the thing will jump at her and bite. She looks over at Maleficent and hopes that she’ll direct her on what to do. While she did use magic while being the Queen of Mean…she doesn’t exactly know how she did it. While she remembers everything she did as the Queen of Mean perfectly, it still feels like a dream at times.
“We’ll start simple, a better option until you get use to using and the feel of magic. But before that there are some things we should go back over.”
She says to Audrey and she has no idea what Maleficent means by the ‘feel’ of magic. But she just nods her head in acceptance as she gets used to holding the scepter. Feeling the weight in her hands and staring into the Dragon’s Eye. Maleficent walks over and sits on the ground, Audrey blinks before sitting down on the ground in front of her.
”There are seven types of spells. Charms, Curses, Transfigurations, Healing Spell, Jinxes, Hexes, and Counter Spells.”
She says and Audrey blinks a little at that…she didn’t realize there were so many different types of magic. She assumes Maleficent will explain them all to her as they go. So she just nods her head in understanding and waits to her to keep talking. And also…she doesn’t sound like to use Hexes, Jinxes, and especially Curses…those all sound like dark magic.
“Today we’ll start with Charms, those are the easiest types of magic to use.”
She tells her and Audrey nods her head in acceptance although she doesn’t exactly know what a ‘Charm’ is how it’s different from other types of magic…or how the other types of magic are different. She doesn’t understand how Hexes are different from Curses, or how Jinxes are different.
”…What exactly is…a Charm?”
Audrey asks and Maleficent gives her an amused look at the question as she explains.
”A charm is a type of spell that someone or something properties it didn’t have before. Such as a Levitation Charm being used to make something that once could levitate then be able too. Charms can also be used to influence someone’s emotions.
She explains and Audrey blinks and nods her head slowly at the explanation of what a Charm is. You knew Magic would be so complicated in the end? She certainly didn’t, she assumed it would be easy with how easy other magic users use their power.
”I…think I understand.”
She decides to saying and Maleficent nods her head, seemingly satisfied with the answer. Audrey blinks when Maleficent summons a coffee mug and sets it on the ground. Looking inside the coffee mug she can see plain black coffee. She looks up at the fae to see what she wants her to do with it.
“This is dark roast coffee, I want you to use a charm to give it the properties of a cappuccino. Simple.”
She says and Audrey blinks at what she was just told to do…huh.
”So…I’m just turning this dark roast coffee into a cappuccino?”
Audrey asks and the fae nods her head. She looks at the scepter in her hands and realizes she doesn’t exactly know how to use it. She doesn’t remember how she used it when she was the Queen of Mean. She just thought about what she wanted it to do and it did it. Oh…it’s that simple then…maybe?
Audrey holds the scepter in her hands and feels the magic flow through her veins as she looks at the coffee. She focuses on the cup and doesn’t let anything else distract her except this cup of coffee. The pink mist of magic flows down to surround her, the same pink mist of magic when she was the Queen of Mean.
She forces herself not to panic and just focuses on the cup of dark roast coffee in front of her. Just thinking to herself that she has to turn it into a cappuccino. She nearly jumps when pink misty magic surrounds the cup and then all the magic fades away. Did…Did she do it? She looks at the cup and it still looks like dark roast coffee. Maleficent reaches for the mug and chuckles a bit as she tastes it.
”More like an iced latte than a cappuccino, but you did cast a charm, so I’ll have to give you that.”
Maleficent says and for whatever reason Audrey can’t help the small chuckle and smile that spreads across her face.
She didn’t do exactly what she wanted to do…but it’s a start in the right direction.
