“Hey, that’s okay,” Eddie keeps his tone patient. “It’s okay that you need help. That’s why I’m calling.”
Richie’s silent, then makes a struggling noise. “I wasn’t trying to bother anybody-“
“If you were bothering me, I’d tell you that you’re bothering me,” Eddie assures. “I always tell you when you’re actually bothering me, don’t I?”
“Yes.”
“Richie,” he steadies his breath, trying his hardest not to scare him away. “What’s the matter?”
The silence is long. “I can’t,” he says, sounding almost defeated.
Eddie bites his lip hard, knowing his next words are more than risky. “Can I come see you?”
Maybe it was an excuse to get away from his marriage. Maybe it was an excuse to be with Richie. Maybe it was because he was genuinely worried about his friend.
It was actually all three.
