The Hero's Shadow

Summary:

"So be it, she had thought, if no one would offer assistance to the Hylian Champion, she would. Prophecy or not, he was a person; it would be cruel to let someone awaken in an unfamiliar world, one hundred years into the future, almost everyone they knew gone, physically weakened, and faced with the seemingly insurmountable task of defeating the greatest evil Hyrule had ever known."

Sora, a determined warrior from the Sheikah Clan, defies the warnings of her elders and resolves to aid the hero on his daunting quest to vanquish the evil plaguing Hyrule. Though she was not a prophesied hero like Link, she stands bravely by his side in the face of danger, proving that destiny cannot dictate everything. After all, destiny couldn't have foreseen that she, seemingly insignificant in the grand scheme of things, would fall in love with the hero.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

It had been five days since the towers erupted from the ground with a tremendous shake, sending shockwaves through the land. From what Sora had gathered from other travelers, it wasn't just the Necluda region afflicted by this strange phenomenon; these mysterious structures had emerged all across Hyrule, leaving most wary of their unknown significance. And it wasn’t just the towers – shrines too had emerged from the ground. One had even appeared on the edge of the village; she had wanted to investigate, but the elders had sternly warned everyone to keep away.

If this was indeed ancient Sheikah technology, it stood to reason that Ganon would stir once more if he hadn’t already. Lady Impa, the clan leader, believed that destiny had once again been set in motion. According to her, the rise of the towers could only signify one thing: the emergence of Hyrule’s fated hero.Dangerous times surely loomed ahead.

In the days that followed the strange event, there were even stranger incidents. Monsters began appearing in greater numbers than ever before – excluding the Calamity, of course. This, coupled with the rumors of the Divine Beasts becoming more erratic than usual, made the citizens of Hyrule grow uneasy. This was the general sentiment Sora had picked up during her travels, speaking to those who dared to converse. Most, however, shunned her, unwilling to share any information. In these times, the Sheikah Clan was not looked upon kindly.

It had been three days since Sora left Kakariko Village to investigate the Great Plateau, leaving under less-than-favorable circumstances. Before her departure, Lady Impa had convened a clan meeting to discuss the recently unfolding events. It was the content of this discussion that fueled her decision to depart. The elder Sheikah spoke of a resurrection shrine atop the plateau; it was said to have held the Hylian Champion since before the Calamity, healing a mortal wound over the course of the past century. Lady Impa believed that the towers were a sign that the hero had awakened and would soon embark on a journey to regain his strength and defeat Calamity Ganon. Naturally, this vexed Sora.

“Restore his strength? Was that not the purpose of the resurrection shrine?” she had questioned.

“No. The shrine only restored his waning life force; upon waking he would have found himself in a very weakened state,” Lady Impa had explained.

“Then we must send assistance right away!” Sora insisted.

“No, Sora, this is the hero’s journey to make, and his alone. We must not interfere,” Lady Impa had replied firmly.

An argument had ensued. Sora insisted they send aid to the hero, as this was not a task for anyone to complete alone; everyone else had disagreed. So be it, she had thought, if no one would offer assistance to the Hylian Champion, she would. Prophecy or not, he was a person; it would be cruel to let someone awaken in an unfamiliar world, one hundred years into the future, almost everyone they knew gone, physically weakened, and faced with the seemingly insurmountable task of defeating the greatest evil Hyrule had ever known. With this in mind, she packed what she could carry, saddled her horse, and set off toward the Great Plateau. She wasn’t sure what type of trouble awaited her upon her return, and she wasn’t looking forward to finding out. Disobeying a Sheikah leader was a grave offense. Perhaps that’s why no one supported her argument; they might have silently agreed but wouldn’t dare voice their dissent.
