Chapter 1: A Simple Mistake

Chapter Text

The soft, constant rhythm of an alarm clock beeping could be heard behind a closed door as a certain raven-haired teenager struggled to wake up for school that morning. Groans escaped his throat as his eyes remained wrenched shut and his arm flailed about tiredly in an attempt to shut off his alarm that had gone off for the fifth time this morning - he had multiple alarms each morning due to his ability to either sleep through them or magically turn them off. He liked to pretend his special talent was turning off alarms in his sleep. In his sleepy stupor, however, Yuuichiro somehow managed to, not only fail in turning the alarm off, but also fall out of his bed, along with his blankets which tumbled on top of him. A louder, defeated groan came from the boy as his door was slammed open, an impatient and irritable Guren - kept up last night by his significant other - scolding the pile of blankets on the ground that held his son.

“Listen up you little shit! You’re going to be late for school!,” Yuu simply whined in reply, as he struggled to free himself from his warm and cuddly prison. First world problems, man. Such a struggle.

“Daaaaaaaaaaad… Gimme a breeeeaaak… It’s… Only… It’s only… Uhm…...,” He struggled to recall what time it was, since had hadn’t even glanced over at his alarm clock this morning. Yet, the boy had a severe habit of sleeping in late, partly due to staying up late, but mostly due to that wonderful turning-off-alarm-clocks-in-his-sleep talent. Somehow he managed to anger Guren further with his statement and tired demeanor, causing his father to power walk over to the boy and rip the cocoon of blankets off of him,

“Yuuichiro. It is seven o'clock. You’re never going to fucking make it to school on time.”

Guren’s statement sobered the boy, replacing his drowsy feeling with one of intense dread mixed with adrenaline, similar to what one feels when drinking three cups of coffee after pulling an all-nighter. Shooting up from his rightful place on the floor, he staggered past his father and into the bathroom across the hall, taking a shower faster than he ever had before, not even a hundred percent sure that he was even clean.

After rushing through the remainder of his morning routine, Yuu literally sprinted out of the house - his backpack in tow. Even though class starts at 7:30 AM and it was currently 7:23 AM, the raven haired boy had convinced himself that he would, infact, make it to school on time even though it took him ten minutes to walk to school. He could feel the angry buzz of his phone in his pocket while he imagined Shinoa repeatedly texting him messages like ‘where tf are you’ and ‘YUU GET UR ASS OVER HERE’. Cold dread shivered itself through the teen’s body as he prepared to see his friend in history class, unfortunately the first class of the day. Shaking the almost fear-like sensation off, he continued to jog to school, breaking out into a strong sweat. Damn it… I literally just fucking showered… , he thought to himself, wondering if this morning could get any worse; Yuu felt like a protagonist of some shitty novel. Bringing his right wrist up to his face, he squinted at the face of his watch, and saw that it read 7:29 . Upon noticing that he would not, infact, make it to school on time, he released a loud cry of frustration, kicking his ass into gear and picking up his pace. Why do I always have to oversleep?! I need to stop browsing forums late at night…

Gasping for air, leaning over and clutching at his knees, Yuu had finally made it to school. He carefully scoped out each hallway he had to tiptoe into, sneaking off to his locker like the cool, sly, laid-back individual he was. The boy couldn’t help but grin to himself, rather proud that he managed to make it this far. Finally on his way to class, he strutted with his head held high until he spotted Ferid in the hallway and nearly had a heart attack, pressing his back flush against the wall as he shifted his gaze left and right in an attempt to seek out a proper hiding spot. He took a risky move and sprinted into the boy’s bathroom, hoping to dear god that Ferid didn’t have to pee at the moment. He was always making trips to the bathroom due to his frilly coffee drink addiction. It was a serious problem. Ferid’s weird-ass addictions aside, Yuu’s reason for fearing him was the fact that Ferid was the flamboyant drama club bully of the school. Whatever he found out about you, he would not let it go . When Ferid found out that Yuuichiro’s father was Guren Ichinose, he had an absolute fit and made sure to let each and everyone know this fact. The basis of the situation didn’t really bother Yuu much - he was used to being the center of attention - but it annoyed him to no end that Ferid just couldn’t let go of the damn thing.

Upon hearing the albino’s footsteps near close to him and then make their way past him, a large sigh of relief rushed through Yuu’s lips like a gust of wind as he was finally allowed to leave the literal piss castle. Having lost precious time, the teen exited the bathroom and hurried down the hall, running to the end to reach his classroom. He took a deep breath, straightened his posture, fixed his hair, and quietly opened the door to the classroom.

Promptly tripping over his shoelaces that had apparently come untied.

He clattered onto the floor, face flushed red in embarrassment. The green eyed teenager mumbled a soft ‘ow’ as he dragged himself up off the floor - the ground must have loved him today. Thankfully, only a few of his classmates had noticed as the rest were on their phones or deeply engrossed in conversations with friends. Yuu carefully snuck a glance over at the desk that sat at the front of the classroom, thankful that the teacher seemingly wasn’t present yet. He waved over to his friend Shinoa, noticing that she was silently glaring at him, but also noticing that her expression suddenly shifted into her usual, amused, up-to-no-good smirk. Yuu furrowed his brow, immediately confused at her change in expression, until he slowly came to the realization that something warm had been rested on his bicep for about a minute now,

“Pardon me… You’re blocking the door…” A soft, heavenly voice rang out from behind the teen, and the boy immediately turned around, determined to discover the source of such a lovely timbre. His eyes falling on the beautiful blonde that was now in front of his very own eyes, Yuuichiro was hit with a sudden realization that he had seen this person before.

It was the first day of school, and Yuu had been early to arrive for once after much nagging from Shinoa - she went insane for the cinnamon rolls that they served in the morning to kick off the new school year. This was proved by the text message she sent him that read, ‘i swear to fucking god Yuu, if ur late for the first day of school i will beat u tf up’. However, the lavender haired girl was late for once in her life. As such, Yuu sat outside the office in the lobby near the entrance of the school to wait for her, as he already organized his locker. It was amazing what he could accomplish if he wasn’t late. His eyes wandered around lazily as he leaned over, resting his elbows on his knees and his face in the palms of his hands. As one of the doors to the lobby opened, the ravenette turned his gaze towards the individual who sauntered in, their golden locks seeming to sway in the nonexistent wind, since this was the indoors and wind did not blow indoors. Yuu couldn’t help but let his jaw drop as he watched them, absolutely awestruck by the beautiful woman. They looked incredibly young, so he couldn’t help but wonder if they were an exchange student or something and needed to go over some paperwork. He formed a fantasy in his head, where he spoke to her, and then they somehow became boyfriend and girlfriend and then he’d ask her to prom in a really cute, suave, cool way, and then she’d say yes and then they’d be voted prom king and queen and then they would… A soft blush dusted the boy’s cheeks as Shinoa tapped her friend on the shoulder, her gaze following his glazed over one. She snickered softly as a small grin grew on her cat-like lips, “Come on, space cadet. Let’s go get those fucking cinnamon rolls. You can look at your cinnamon roll later.”

Yuu was startled by Shinoa snapping him out of his haze and turned to glare at her, but was incredibly disappointed to notice that the beautiful woman had disappeared into the office, never to be seen again, “Fuck your cinnamon rolls Shinoa!”

The rusty cogs in Yuu’s mind slowly turned like clockwork, as he realized that this person was, indeed, the woman they had seen. She seemed more… strongly built than he remembered but a deep maroon blush grew on his cheeks nonetheless. He quickly bowed his head and apologized meekly, rushing over to his desk which sat in front of Shinoa’s. He couldn’t help but notice the same cat-like grin that she wore on the first day of school, but he shook off the feeling. As he settled himself into his seat, he watched the blonde shuffle over to the teacher’s desk and lay their briefcase to the side of it. When the blonde went to sit in the chair, Yuu piped up boldly, “U-uhm, I don’t think you can sit there…”

The blonde couldn’t help but chuckle, raising an eyebrow at the teenager before they replied with an amused tone, “Oh? I would think that I could…,” They waved a hand at the other students, smiling lightly, “Alright class, settle down now.”

Yuuichiro was incredibly irritated by the girl’s authoritate control over the classroom, especially as a student. He stood up at his desk, resting his palms on the edge,

“I really don’t think you can sit there!”

“...I’m your student teacher, Mister…” They looked over at a seating chart, quickly scanning it, “Hiiragi?”

“St… Teacher? ...S-sorry!”

Sitting himself back down, the green eyed teen buried his face in his hands in shame, embarrassed that he greatly misunderstood the entirety of the situation that had just transpired. He couldn’t help but sigh at the situation, immediately wishing that he had simply slept in late and decided not to even come to school today. The chattering of the class slowly settled down as Yuu slowly lifted his head to look at the front of the classroom, trying his best to avoid looking at his student teacher. They stood up from their place at the front, appearing to have finished taking attendance. Delicately, the blonde cleared their throat as they looked over the class, smiling softly at everyone,

“Good morning everyone! I am your student teacher for the remainder of the year, Mr. Hyakuya! Please treat me kindly - I don’t want to have to send anyone down to Ms. Krul.”

Mister…? Oh. Oh no. No no no no no no no. Yuu could have sworn he screamed out loud, breaking out into a cold sweat. He felt Shinoa tap him on the shoulder, and he looked back to see her grinning wildly as he whispered harshly, “ You knew, didn’t you?! ” She simply laughed hysterically in response, leaning back in her chair.

It was going to be a long year. A long, long, long year.
