The stillness that comes over Philip makes the messenger shift on his feet.
Agnes nods for the man to leave and squeezes Philip’s hand tightly in hers. She wants to kiss him, wants to hold him against her chest, but there is no time for that. Richard Lionheart is dead.
Her husband’s eyes are wet when he finally looks up at her, “What can I do?”
“Where is John?” she answers firmly. “You must find Arthur before he does and keep him close - ”
“Yes,” he interrupts, his voice thick, “I know what the king must do. But what of Philip?”
