Serenity felt the chill of the autumn breeze against her face. She glanced at her swollen pinky and sighed. She jammed it trying to sheath her blade quicker. She saw the sky start to turn a pink hue as the sun began to rise. She leaned against the railing of the porch; this training was easier than the training back home. The door of the barracks opened, a small creak echoing from behind her. Serenity looked back, locking eyes with Charlotte. Charlotte closed the door just as quietly as she had opened it and stood next to Serenity.
“You’re up early,” Charlotte said, leaning against the pillar near the stairs. Serenity moved her body to face Charlotte’s.
“I never went to sleep,” Serenity smiled as she answered. Charlotte scoffed.
“That’s a very unhealthy habit, Serenity. You should get some sleep, especially since today is going to be rough.”
Serenity sighed in agreement. They turned back to watch the sunrise, which had turned more orange than pink since Serenity last looked at it.
“How long have you been up?” Serenity said, breaking the silence.
“Uh, I think since 3? or 4? I’m not too sure,” Charlotte shrugged, her eyes fixated on the rising sun. Serenity smiled, looking at Charlotte. Her heart started to beat faster, and her face felt warm. Charlotte noticed her friend staring.
“Woah, Serenity, are you okay? Your face is all red,” Charlotte reached her hand up towards Serenity’s forehead, which Serenity dodged very suspiciously.
“Oh, uhm, yeah— I’m fine just… cold,” Serenity said, her voice slightly panicked. Charlotte laughed.
“What, it almost sounds like you’ve got a crush~” Charlotte teased. Serenity felt her face get even warmer.
“What?! No- I don’t- I can’t- Just no!” Serenity denied Charlotte’s claims, which further fueled her to continue to tease Serenity.
“Ooooooh, you’ve definitely got one! Who is it? Is it Romero? or Miyoko? Or-“
“It’s Ana!” Serenity whisper-yelled, cutting Charlotte off. An awkward silence fell between them.
“…Ana?”
“Yes, Ana,” Serenity said in an annoyed voice, hoping she would stop asking her about it.
Charlotte furrowed her brows.
“Hm, I can kinda see it…” Charlotte said, her ‘pondering face’ forming. Serenity inhaled, a knot in her stomach forming. Charlotte snapped her fingers.
“You should confess!”
Serenity blinked. She was just now processing what she’d just told Charlotte.
Oh fuck.
