"Call me."

Summary:

Akira doesn’t want to say goodbye. The time zone difference makes keeping in touch regularly hard, but she—

She looks up at Shelley—why is she so tall—who’s smiling softly. Releasing the handle of her suitcase, Akira reaches out and winds her arms around Shelley’s waist. “Call me,” she says, refusing to look at Shelley. “I will pick up, whenever.”

I missed you.

I’ll miss you.

Sometimes I still have nightmares about Tokyo.

Notes:

Written for July Break Bingo 2024 for the prompt “Location: Airport” and Sapphic Summer’s “call me”

Summary of relevant parts of the Afterstory (which is at this point probably not even canon) It’s twice as long as the actual fic ;;

- “like many former ATF members” Akira goes on a long vacation and travels abroad, but in reality she wants to visit the places of former battles around the world to preserve the memories of the people who fought in them
- right after visiting the place in southern Nevada where a particularly hard battle was fought, the Nellis Air Force Base, Akira wants to go back to Japan (she doesn’t even book a hotel room) but Shelley texts her asking to meet up to which Akira just replies “sure” but truthfully she’s pretty excited about it
- Shelley got honorably discharged and is working as a bartender in Las Vegas
- it takes Akira a while to get to Las Vegas from Nellis: everything is in the middle of reconstruction, public transport is in a bad state, and she doesn’t want to ask the Nellis base people to lend her a car, so she decides to just walk there in the over 30°C/86°F weather
- while she’s walking and dragging her suitcase behind her, a convertible stops beside her: it’s Shelley, wearing casual clothes and sunglasses, asking Akira why she didn’t just wait at the base for Shelley to pick her up, to which Akira gets a bit sulky (why didn’t Shelley offer in the first place)
- Shelley cuts off Akira’s rant by handing her a cold beer (Modelo Especial) when she gets in the car, Akira is grateful, but she takes it back when Shelley teases her not to drink it yet because people will think she’s giving alcohol to kids
- Akira gets mad, Shelley just laughs and says she was kidding

- arriving to Vegas, Shelley takes Akira to a steak bar
- Akira is a little tipsy
- they go to a casino where Akira wins a lot, but when Shelley asks if she wants to stay longer Akira gets a bad feeling so she says she won’t because she will spend the money at Shelley’s bar
- Shelley says “Akira is so nice” and Akira gets embarrassed and replies “I didn’t mean it like that” while blushing, and Shelley laughs but drops the topic
- the bar Shelley works at is cozy but popular and has a nice atmosphere, but it’s booked for the night just for Akira
- while drinking (Shelley made Akira a margarita) they get a little sentimental, and Shelley teases Akira that she sounds like an old man, then the topic drifts to Smith. Shelley says he was such a good person but Akira retorts that the guy is still alive
- the narration summarizes what Smith & co are up to (receiving the medal of honor, cruise trip, Smith going MIA afterwards) and they speculate what’s going on

- the following morning Shelley takes Akira to the airport
- Akira doesn’t say it out loud, but she’s really glad Shelley is doing okay, then she recalls the previous night she drunkenly hugged Shelley and told her “I’m so glad you’re alive” but she doesn’t bring it up because otherwise she would die of embarrassment
- Shelley smiles
- before Akira boards she takes out her ATF members only phone and tries contacting Smith but it doesn’t connect

My best guess at the timeline: some time after the Isami & Smith & Lulu cruise trip but right before Smith shows up as Bravern in NYC.

Work Text:

The drive to the airport is filled with Shelley’s chatter about every oddity she has experienced since leaving the army. Akira is happy that Shelley’s content with her new life, even though she doesn’t say it out loud. She’s sure Shelley knows how Akira feels, though.

(Akira doesn’t want to think about last night when she drunkenly clung to Shelley, crying “I’m so happy you’re alive.” Otherwise she would die of embarrassment. Don’t the Americans say “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?”)

The lobby is overcrowded—as expected of a popular tourist place—which makes Akira stick to Shelley.

They’re leading different lives now, but—

Akira doesn’t want to say goodbye. The time zone difference makes keeping in touch regularly hard, but she—

Akira looks up at Shelley—why is she so tall—who’s smiling softly. Releasing the handle of her suitcase, she reaches out and winds her arms around Shelley’s waist. “Call me,” she says, refusing to look at Shelley. “I will pick up, whenever.”

I missed you.

I’ll miss you.

Sometimes I still have nightmares about Tokyo.

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, convinced I saw you die right in front of my eyes, until I grab my phone to scroll through our texts.

Shelley hugs back, tight. “I will.”

The loudspeaker announces the boarding of Akira’s flight.

Akira doesn’t say goodbye.

“See you later,” she says in Japanese, turns around, and disappears into the crowd.

When she boards, a text awaits her.
