Even in a World Full of Monsters

Work Text:

The sky had already released a vivid orange color, its rays splashing gently on the two figures. In addition, there was a gentle breeze that visited occasionally, caressing their hair in turn.

The third division was paying a visit to the first division’s headquarters. Indeed, their meetings and work had already been completed, and some of the people from the third division had begun to return to Tachikawa.

But not their Vice-Captain, who preferred the sudden call from the first-division captain. For a private conversation. Which was actually just a meeting between lovers who had not seen each other for a long time, channeling their longings for each other.

“Why did you call me here for? Speak now so I can return to my base sooner.” He could see the figure leaning against the metal barrier on the base’s roof. His elbows were folded, with a mini video game console in his hands. It seemed that he had not yet realized that he was present here and was still focused on his game. His eyes twitched rapidly as the console’s screen illuminated his face. Thinking about it, the Kaiju Number 1 ability he adapted was very useful for his hobby as well.

His voice was cutting through the wind, “Narumi!!”

“Ah, here you are. Can you wait a bit for me? I’ll finish my match in a minute.”

Hearing that, Hoshina drew and exhaled a long breath, undoing his intentions to give that man a raw blow to the body for free. In the midst of his tired brain being bombarded with meetings all day, he could only succumb and sit down on a bench not far from where Narumi was standing.

He leaned his body back. It felt so good to be able to relax once in a while like this. Hoshina had even forgotten the last time he had been relaxing, along with the Kaiju attacks that had been relentlessly attacking the city lately. He slowly loosened his body, looking for the most relaxing position, imperceptibly closing his eyes.

“Wanna rest for a while…” Instead of wasting time in vain, it was better for Hoshina to use the time Narumi wasted on him by resting his body.

The next time he became aware of himself, Hoshina could find Narumi’s face above his body, staring with a flat gaze. The sky was already showing a large expanse of deep blue, and the spring breeze was already getting increasingly chilly.

“You’re finally awake,” he says, his voice a soft, sharkskin rasp. Narumi’s eyes slid over him coolly while Hoshina’s heart surged ten beats. Sometimes, just looking at him makes his gut twist a little.

He rubbed his eyes, which still felt heavy, while stretching all the muscles in his body, which immediately stopped when he realized that the sky had turned into a different shade. “Eh? It’s already night? How long have I been asleep?”

Narumi says, after a long pause, “Three hours.”

“Three hours?! Why didn’t you wake me up, pineapple head?!” Hoshina reels in confusion and shock.

“Shut up, bowl-cut! Your face is too peaceful when you sleep. I just can’t bear it!” Narumi had now moved his body and face to Hoshina’s side, joining him in lying on the rooftop floor. His hands were both folded under his head for support.

Hoshina did not realize when his body changed positions from sitting on the bench to lying on the roof floor like this. Most likely, in this case, the culprit was his own boyfriend. Imagining that Narumi had just carried him somehow made his whole body feel like it was levitating in the clouds.

“Your face has also become way too pretty. I don’t wish to lose that view so early.” It sounds as if Narumi is reaffirming his feelings to him. If that’s his intention, it’s working. And Hoshina blushes, feeling his heated breath grace the shell of his ear, turning his face away in embarrassment, “Shut up, Narumi. I am not pretty.”

“That’s a lie.”

“I’m more like.. ‘handsome’ might be the right word.” He denied it with a firm voice. Still trying to hide away a faint blush that appears.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. You’re still pretty for me.”

“Say that word one more time, and I’ll fucking kill you.”

Pretty, pretty, pretty. I don’t mind though, please do it.” Narumi let out a mocking tone, but his expression still implied something else. It was as if there was a large stone stuck in his heart, making him feel uneasy and unsettled in accepting his own life now. It was as if his mind, which was constantly noisy, was still floating in space, making him dizzy.

“I’m tired of surviving in this world. At least, if I can die peacefully in the hands of my love, that would be a wonderful ending for me, wouldn’t it?”

Hoshina blinked his eyes several times. Unusually, the Narumi Gen that he knew was indifferent to anything other than killing Kaiju and spending time with his childish hobbies, but he was now lying down while contemplating his life, “Who are you? You’re not a Narumi Gen I know.”

Not knowing why the air was so heavy, filled with emotion, both of them drowned in a continuous silence. The only sounds were the sound of the traveling wind and the faint chirping of the crickets.

“Oh, I’m still your Narumi Gen, but with a different side this time.” He could hear how Narumi, who now had both eyes covered by his two-toned hair fringe, chuckled softly. But that chuckle was strangely heartache-inducing. It left Hoshina wondering what exactly was wrong with his beloved?

During their time together, this was the first time Narumi had revealed this side towards him.

Hoshina finally began to understand that perhaps there would eventually come a time when a childish person like Narumi would also show this side of him. The side that he really wanted to bury deep within himself.

That moved Hoshina’s body. There was a powerful emotion arising from within him, he desired to make his loved one feel better. He just simply wanted to pamper him. Maybe hugging or affectionately caressing his head would work, he thinks. So he promptly placed himself on top of Narumi’s body and flung himself down as he clung to the man, tightly.

“Soushirou…”

“Just say what you want to say. I’ll listen to you.”

Hoshina’s palm traveled across the man’s face, brushing back the bangs in his hair. Immediately, he discovered the patterned red pupils that were gazing up at him with a troubled glance, asking for help.

Hoshina often portrayed Narumi as a cat who always wanted to be spoiled and who liked to crave affection. Despite his formidable figure as a lone wolf on the battlefield, actually, he’s just a house cat deep inside. Over time, he became used to that side of Narumi and learned how to handle it well.

My dear boy, who hurts you this time?”

Something about Hoshina’s words seemed to awaken him from within. Plus, his lover was now also smiling, until both of his eyelids closed, with the moonlight shining behind him. It was such an unforgettable sight that Narumi could feel his pulse rushing through his body, giving rise to an unparalleled feeling of pleasant warmth.

There was a pause, and Narumi sighed, “This unfair, chaotic world full of monsters.”

“Then I shall destroy this world for you if you want.”

“No need, heed my words. I’ll destroy it myself.”

Narumi’s hands responded by pulling him closer, offering him the very same warmth. A slight smile now began to appear on his face, a smile that Hoshina had been longing for as well. Oh, it made his heart flutter even more until it felt like the pounding could be heard in his own ears.

“By the way, sorry for showing you this side of me. You must be so confused.”

He could see the reflection of his figure in the two reddish beads of Narumi’s, who was now looking at him adoringly, full of love. And also, there was a look Narumi had rarely shown him in his life. A hopeful gaze, as if he had just realized there was still a spark of hope and reason for him to continue to live in a world full of madness and chaos.

Little did Hoshina realize that the reason actually ended with him.

He’s indeed Narumi’s whole reason. His whole world.

“It’s okay, I’m used to it. Sometimes people can get emotional and just need somebody to talk to,” Hoshina placed his palms on either side of Narumi’s cheeks as if forcing him to return his gaze. While stroking with affection, his lips were now sending small kisses several times across the surface of Narumi’s face. Meanwhile, the man beneath him remained silent as if enjoying his treatment with a calm expression on his face.

Yet Hoshina could watch his chest rise and fall rapidly, his pulse accelerating at the thought of something like this happening. He could tell Narumi was feeling a little nervous; the way his eyes darted back and forth quickly was an obvious tell. “That’s the beauty of being a human, isn’t it? Being able to feel all the colors of emotions exploding inside you…”

“… It’s actually the best thing ever.” He whispered tenderly, fingers still tracing the line of his boyfriend’s jaw, “Even if the world falls apart, you still have me by your side. Never forget that, Gen.”

Carefully, He lowered his head onto Narumi’s face once again, his lips immediately darting out to give an experimental kiss again. He also gasped, hands reaching down to tangle in Narumi’s hair.

“You’re right.” He responded with haste, a pleading look in his eyes as he tried to pull Hoshina closer, make him smile, and laugh quietly, nodding at his response. Meanwhile, Hoshina continued to play with his hair, alternating between tugging and giving his head light rubs.

He can already tell that Narumi enjoyed his affection in silence.

“In another life, where Kaiju doesn’t even exist. I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you, Hoshina.”

Hearing that caused Hoshina to snort a short giggle, as he knew that reference from, “Really? In a time like this, you just quoted a romantic line from a movie?”

“What? I really meant it.”

“Liar, I don’t believe your brain can process such emotional words.”

“You’re doubting me, huh?! You don’t even trust your own boyfriend?”

“So, is it right or wrong?”

“What?”

“The fact that all you do is quote lines from movies and not make it yourself.”

“I-it’s true… but that’s not the point! That’s really what I meant to say from the bottom of my heart, fox-eyes!”

Hoshina let out a soft laugh as he finally decided not to bully Narumi any further, “Hahaha, okay! I’ll stop, sorry for ruining the moment — ”

“But in this life, I would have really liked just doing Kaiju hunting and humanity saving with you.” His voice toned down as he leaned, pressing his lips to Narumi’s quickly before gently cupping his face with his hands once again. “I think it’s still fun enough.”

Blood rushed up his face — The tips of his ears turning bright red as his lover’s pupil followed him dearly.

“How about another kiss?” Narumi’s voice is now low, sultry, and wry, and that seems to do the trick — Hoshina’s lips quirk up with a grin, and the tension that had formed in his body eases out as he relaxes.

“Thought you’d never ask.” This time, Narumi’s one hand that was still on his waist had traveled, crawling up to the back of his neck. He pulled him back down into his embrace, wordless, and tilted his head. His lips touch Hoshina’s, and everything inside him goes up in flames. His lover inhales a sharp, desperate breath that sounds almost shocked, his lips trembling against Narumi’s as their breath mixes between their mouths. His body tenses involuntarily, every muscle locking up. It’s as though he’s forgotten the steps to a dance that had once shaped their desire and sharpened it to a point that penetrated the deepest parts of his soul.

Just like that, Hoshina opens his mouth and lets in the flood that is the other half of his soul. He starts to sobs, it was as if he could also feel the emotional turmoil his boyfriend was feeling earlier. His hands flew down to desperately clutch at Narumi’s well-built shoulders, kissing him with a frantic intensity. It feels indecent to kiss his boyfriend through his tears, but of all the things Narumi knows, he knows Hoshina the best. Pulling away now would devastate him.

Instead, Narumi further tightened his grip on his hand that was still on the nape of Hoshina’s neck while deepening the kiss, raising the intensity to match his lover’s breakdown. Threading his fingers past his temples, he winded his hands into Hoshina’s lush, dark purplish raw-silk mane, mingling their tongues, breath, and souls, carried into the sacred caves of each other’s mouths like sparrows on the breeze, cryptic and cyclical and eternal.

Clinginess… is not the best way to word how he describes his attachment to Hoshina. He wants the other with him at most times and wants the other’s arms around him, his voice annoying him with useless facts that Narumi can scoff at but not care because his pretty Hoshina is with him. His scent of the sweetest flower known to mankind is home to Narumi; he already wants the other’s warmth again. It’s him who craves for Hoshina’s touches and voice, to pull him close and never let him go.

He finally is able to love Hoshina, even in this unfair, chaotic world full of monsters. That alone is already such a blessing for someone with no such a great luck like him.

At long last, that feels enough for him, for both of them, in this timeline of life.

Enough to be happy together.
