Work Text:

The soft glow of the sun shone down onto the plains of grass and trees, illuminating the morning mist with its bright presence. She could feel the tingling of the morning prying at her eyelids as she sleepily opened them in a slow, tired motion. Laying on the ground she felt each individual blade of grass on her back, luring her back into the earth's grasp that she had so soundly slept in that night. Looking up, the sky was painted by numerous stars that were soon to be engulfed by the sun's penetrating light, each one sparkling its last goodbyes before fading into obscurity.

It seemed, she thought, stars only existed when people remembered to look up at them. They never seem to go away.

It had been too long since she last felt the earth on her skin. She couldn't exactly pinpoint how long, however; her memory blurred by the fact that she had been dead for an unspecified amount of time. Within her, however, there was a longing to know why she was brought back to Goikey. Afterall, she had been chased away by those so familiar to her, it was hard to think of someone willing enough to bring her back after everything that had drawn her away from her friends. She turned on her back, directing her focus towards the warm, inviting light that drank away any traces of dark.

        A warm, inviting light.

However, the more she stared at the rising sun, the worse it began to hurt her eyes.

The sun, the thing that sustains all life on earth.

The sun, the thing that can never get too close to what it breathes life into.

A paradox that always seemed to frustrate her. How could such a relationship be so reliant on keeping distance?

A frown had formed on her face sometime while she was in thought. Questioning her existence had only led to her mind being flooded by old memories. A hang glider, a hand, a promise. She wasn't too sentimental, believing that living in the past only prevented the forming of a meaningful future, however there was this feeling that she couldn't shake off, a feeling that someone else was trying to relive the same memories that she was. Even with her eyes closed, the light was still there, burning a hole in her memories. All the stars in the morning light were gone. No matter how brightly they shone, they could never shine amongst the sun.

But that didn't stop the Earth from turning.  So, getting up from the bed of grass beneath her, she wandered off into the horizon. Chasing the light that she would never be able to touch.
