bad dream (right there next to me)

Summary:

Lana wakes up from a bad dream.

Work Text:

Lana woke with a jolt and a gasp, and her eyes shot open, greeted by darkness.

Another dream of Kael'thas with another woman. Of course. She had those types of dreams often, and they never failed to make her wake up in a rage or in tears. This time, it was neither. The nightmare always went away quickly, but the memories remained sharp enough that she felt her body tense involuntarily as she lay there, her mind reeling.

She looked behind her, and found Kael'thas there, his back turned to her. Lana flipped her body so she faced his back, "Kael?" She called softly. Silence was her answer.

The woman relaxed and she let out a quiet sigh as she stared at his back, her fears almost immediately quelled by the sight of her lover sleeping beside her. He looked so peaceful, like he didn't have any cares or troubles, even if he had just been through what would be seen as torture to most men.

If it were anyone else, she wouldn't hesitate to wake them up so she could be in their company, but Kael'thas was different. For the longest time, he struggled greatly with sleep; it was near impossible for him to fall asleep, and it was just as impossible to stay asleep.

Lana left him alone on nights when he could fall asleep. He needed the rest, and she wouldn't forgive herself if she let any harm come to him due to her impulses.

So instead, she laid there and watched her lover sleep peacefully. Simply knowing he was there worked wonders for the anxiety that filled her every time she woke up from those awful dreams. She took comfort in knowing that he was safe, and she knew she could trust him. And she did.

Kael'thas was the only person who ever saw past her anger, her jealousy, her fear, and her doubts. He helped her see things that were obvious to everyone else, and he had no qualms about voicing his opinions on everything, including hers. She was eternally grateful for that. He understood her in ways nobody else ever could.

Lana tried her best to push away the memories of the nightmare she'd just woken up from. The women she would see him with didn't exist, even if they were much prettier than she perceived herself to be. There was no reason for her to worry anyway; they weren't real, after all, and she was certain Kael'thas couldn't care less about such trivial matters. She didn't have to worry about him being interested in anyone; he swore to her time and time again that he belonged to her and her alone.

She came back to reality when Kael'thas shifted, and for a moment she worried that he was struggling with staying asleep again. But thankfully, he was simply changing his position.

He faced her now, and she took a moment to admire his face. He was devastatingly gorgeous, with long, soft blonde hair and green eyes she'd find herself lost in, a face she'd go to war for. Her lips twitched slightly into an appreciative smile, and she allowed herself a brief moment to appreciate the man before her.

Then she shuffled forward until she could slip into his inviting arms, and her heart swelled with love at the way his arms almost instinctively tightened around her, pressing her into his body. They fit together perfectly like pieces of a puzzle, and she found herself relaxing once more, letting out a deep breath.

She fell back asleep like that, without a care in the world and with her lover by her side.
