Chapter Text
Carmilla never stopped running until she could, she would have liked to have been able to say that she never looked back either, but when you’re scared shitless and there’s a giant animal that appears to be a minotaur chasing you, you’re going to look back.
“What the fuck?” she screamed while running, she wasn’t panting very hard, that meant she was still able to scream easily.
She was in decent shape; she had run away from Maman many times to avoid having her hurt her, so this wasn’t too awful. The situation still was not ideal. She was on her way home from school; she and Maman lived in New York, but they didn’t live in the city so she walked through some fields to get home. Though she wasn’t necessarily in a hurry to get home to the empty household, except for her mother, since her brother Will had died, which she was blamed for, she did not want (or expect) to encounter a minotaur on her journey.
Not too sure where she was running to; she just knew that she needed to get far away from that thing. She wasn’t going to let her legs give out, even if they and her lungs began to ache.
“Carmilla! Watch out you useless lesbian!” she heard someone scream.
Carmilla knew that voice, it was ever so annoying and unforgettable. She didn’t want to hear it again if she didn’t have to, but considering the body that accompanied it just shot the Minotaur she was not going to complain too much. It was Danny Lawrence, the monstrously tall red head from school who always got into her into trouble and seemed to disappear every summer. Though Carmilla would never admit that they were friends, Danny was probably her best friend, her only friend. She argued with Carmilla to no end, but she watched out for her and was there when Will died. Carmilla never quite understood why she, or Danny, stuck around for each other, but they had formed a bond with each other none the less.
When she looked up to see Danny, she was busy fighting the Minotaur. She didn’t know where Danny had gotten a bow, how she was able to use it, or why she had one; however this was not the time to ask questions. The Minotaur seemed too strong and fast for just Danny, which was saying something because Danny can usually hold her own against any sort of asshole at school.
“How can I help?” she asked loudly, she didn’t want to say she cared about Danny’s wellbeing either, but she didn’t want to lose someone else.
“Here, take this. I’ll explain later, just trust me.” Danny replied, even though she was out of breath. That worried the other girl who was standing there.
Carmilla reached out to catch what was being thrown at her. When she felt it, it seemed like an ordinary keychain, but it had a skull of some sort on the end. Why would Danny give her a keychain? The skull was cool and all, but there was a minotaur busy attacking them and she’s worried about a keychain?
As though the taller girl had sensed her confusion, she said, “Pull the skull and hold it away from your body, okay? Brace yourself for it to get heavier, too.”
She pulled the skull as she was asked to do. Her dark eyes with smudged eyeliner around them widened as a sword began growing in her hands. It was a beautiful weapon, and it was as dark as the leather pants she was wearing which were a plus. No one seemed to understand how the teen could run in leather pants, but when your life depends on it you have to do what you need to do, and still look fashionable and relatively attractive if possible.
Now that Carmilla had a sword she understood what she was able to do. She was thankful that she had been taking kendo since she was eight years old, even though she was not used to this heavy, more European styled sword her training would still be able to help her out. Danny had been thankful to find out that Carmilla had been taking kendo when they met, though they were thirteen at the time. Suddenly, she seemed to know why the ginger giant was so glad about this.
Carmilla charged at the minotaur from behind, of course she was a bit worried to while doing so, but she needed to. She jumped and swung at it, and somehow she was able to get a hit in at its lower back. It wasn’t a very deep cut, but the immense beast seemed to feel it since he retaliated; he turned around as Carmilla began walking backwards, away from it, and he decided to take a swing at her.
She jumped as high as she could to avoid its hand, which was more of a big meaty claw, but it was not enough since he managed to hit her. She was in searing pain and tears swelled in her eyes, it was searing pain. She wasn’t going to let this mishap ruin her punk reputation, she had a few broken ribs probably, but that was not an excuse to cry in front of Danny. That asshole would never let her hear the end of it, even if there was a fucking minotaur attacking them.
Danny probably would have said something to ask if Carmilla was okay, she usually did whenever Carmilla suddenly came to school looking like shit due to Maman’s tendencies to be violent, but she was a little preoccupied at the moment. She decided that continuing to try and kill the creature with numerous shots from arrows probably left them with a better chance of survival than if she were to stop and check on Carm.
Carmilla snapped out of her daze again, thankfully it hadn’t lasted long enough for the minotaur to approach her again. That would have been bad, and she was already mentally cursing every higher power she knew of. Even though the two girls outnumbered the living beast that might as well have been, they were at quite an obvious disadvantage.
She needed to get in another attack before it tried to swipe at her again, or Danny. Before she knew it, it was too late; the movement of the beast only flashed before her eyes for what she felt was less than a split second and the next thing she knew Danny was on the ground. She still had a hard time admitting that Danny was her friend, but now she was fucking mad. A very pissed Carmilla was suddenly ready to destroy the giant. She had a hard time believing anything was taller than the infamous Danny Lawrence, but this hideous thing was.
Picking up what was now her sword from the ground next to her, she raised it and her anger took over, this seemed to increase her speed too as she continuously slashed through its gross hide. Blood began to flow out of its skin, but it was only temporarily phased.
It got up and turned towards her again, Carmilla tried to convince herself that this was good since it got it away from the injured Danny. She wanted to use this to her advantage; she began to run in the furthest direction from the other teenager and she hoped that the minotaur would chase after her. She was thankful when it did. She quickly turned back at Danny, who was not able to sit up and was eating some weird looking yellowish gold stuff, and then went in attack mode again.
She was fast and her kendo training was doing her well, but it still was not the same as fighting against a minotaur for the first (and hopefully last) time. She knew that she probably wasn’t going to be able to win, but she wasn’t ready to give up without a fight, and she sure as hell didn’t want to be blamed by Maman for another death. Before she knew it, Danny was sitting up and shooting at the minotaur from behind, despite the long distance.
All of a sudden, the ground opened up. It swallowed the bottom half of the large beast. It was stunning to the girls, but this gave them an unforeseen advantage that they were not going to waste so they got to work. Carm continued slashing at the beast, and Danny continued shooting her arrows at it. They worked well together, even though if no one knew any different then they would appear to hate each other.
After what seemed like over a decade, the minotaur was finally died. As the dangerous creature was dying it had crumbled to dust, this was odd to Carmilla, but she didn’t think much of it. She was just glad that the minotaur was gone. The sink hole in the ground seemingly disappeared also. The world was even more confusing to her than usual today, it always worked in ways that she was not able to understand, that itself was understandable though. It appeared to be a fundamental truth that everyone learns at some point in their life, even if it could not be easily stated into words, and when it was stated it was in a confusing manner to the listener.
Danny took a sip of something out of her canteen that she had on her side, she was then feeling a lot better and ran over to Carmilla. Sadly, the same thing could not be said for the darker haired girl. She was out of adrenaline and the pain of her broken ribs was setting in, it was barely tolerable yet somehow she was able to stand. Carmilla’s stamina always impressed Danny, but the even sadder thing was that the ginger was almost one hundred percent certain that this was not the first broken rib that Carmilla has had. She was often hurt by Maman and would have to come to Danny for first aid.
She gave Carm her canteen and instructed her to drink out of it, which she did, and she began to feel better. She was going to ask Danny what this stuff was, but before she did she took another drink. She was convinced it was some sort of magical concoction that Ms. Lawrence had made at one of her odd summer camps.
“We have to get going.” Danny announced.
“Not to stop you in your tracks or anything, ginger giant, but you have some explaining to do.” Carmilla countered, she was rather perturbed at her statement since it was open ended.
“I will later, I promise. We have to get to camp, you need to meet Chiron, and there’s someone else I think you would like to meet, her name is Laura.” She explained.
Carmilla huffed in response, but she picked up her sword and followed the other who had already begun to swiftly walk away.
