Behind the Veil

Chapter 1: Across Time and Space

Summary:

Faro is not a traditional Yulpa that you might find on their homeworld of Grenelka. He's not very religious and years of sighting predators near his parents' farm greatly desensitized him to their presence. By any definition of Yulpa cultist he's an perfect example of a heretic. Maybe that's why he decided to stay as the only one of his siblings on the farm. Now he's on quest to help his parents by removing a nest of a very pesky pest. His methods might not be approved by federation dogma. Surely nothing bad will emerge from his journey to jungle... What is that cracking sound though?

Memory Transcription Subject: Faro, Yulpa Farmer
Date [Standardized Human Time]: December 7, 2136

The morning started like every other one did, I woke up, had first meal, and started helping my parents out with their farm. My siblings all went into the city for their career, but not me; I stayed home to help improve their farm, and I enjoy doing it. Unfortunately, their farm was on the border of the jungle, and because of the humidity it's almost impossible for Exterminators to cleanse in there. You'd have a higher chance of igniting yourself in your sleep than burning something in there.

Although, being totally honest, I do have another reason for staying out here… Growing up, I'd always seen the predators lurking in the forests, but eventually I wound up becoming desensitized to their presence, and I started noticing that they didn't tend to come close if we just left them alone. Anyone short of a Prestige Exterminator's kid would be tossed in a Facility for saying something like that. I'd be lying if I said I was scared of those places.. with so many stories of how people come out, not fixed but different. Not to mention the fact that not believing in our species' faith is just as bad, if not worse, than a diagnosis. I've never been as fanatical as everyone else seems about it, which is all the more reason to stay out here, helping mom and pop with the farm, lest I wind up getting dragged away…

Now's not the time to be thinking about that, right now I have to track down a den of Grinkel that have been chewing up our farm. They crop up so often that even the Exterminators stopped responding to reports of them all the way out here! Of course, all the farmers out here have resorted to using poisons to deal with them.. of course, with how Exterminators don't come out here very often, nobody's likely to get caught, but it's still a pretty big risk. Despite all that's done to try and deal with them, they just keep on coming back... So here I am, in the woods, to try out a more.. permanent solution to the pest problem. The only way to be rid of the pests is to deal with all of them, and the best way to get that done is to completely destroy the nest and all the pests inside of it.

As much of a nuisance these things have been to our work on the farm, they'd never approve of what I'm doing.. that's why I snuck out to get this done. Although I don't mind coming out here, despite how tricky this forest is, the scenery is really nice to look at. The trees reaching up into the sky, the various types of bushes, the Grinkel den, the vines hanging down– wait a minute. There it is! It's a simple plan to deal with them, flood the den with this flammable gas, which should be enough to suffocate them all on its own, but just to be sure.. the last step is to light it up, which should make sure they're all gone. If the poison would get someone diagnosed then this would get me locked up forever… I've gotta be quick–

What's that odd feeling? It feels like almost what I'd imagine being pulled out of FTL to feel like; a really strong pull.. where's it coming from? Setting down the gas tank, I grip my favorite knife as I follow the sensation. Soon enough I'd find.. nothing? Whatever the feeling is, it's coming from right in front of me, but there's nothing– Where's that breaking sound coming from—

Notes:

Grinkel – A very pest creature native to Grenelka, the Yulpa homeworld. Visually resembling a cross between a mole and a rat, while being notably larger than the average for both species. They have furr colours ranging from deep black to almost gold-like. They are omnivorous, but Yulpa never observed them eating meat as their main source of animal protein are worms living deep underground. Unfortunately their main source of food are plants which they ferociously devour. Surface parts of a plant and roots are not safe from their endless hunger. They are highly social living in colonies. They usually dig out one big main chamber with one entrance follow with many small nursery compartments. They are able to reproduce at terrifying speeds as they are always in heat, their pregnancy lasts only 18 days and younglings mature very quickly.
