Chapter 1: Wrong way

Chapter Text

You take out the tape of James' case and you can't believe that he could have done something so terrible to be among the dead people found at the hotel...

Did you think it would start like this? Perhaps this was your first reaction to this news. However, that's the point... You've known all along. Even if you're James's partner, there's nothing stopping you from becoming an assassin at the hotel so that no one suspects anything. Esrael Blackthorne pays a lot of money for every person you kill when you carry out a death sentence imposed by a cruel judge. And they knew what was going to happen to him. At first you regretted killing your friend, but a contract is a contract. If he was invited to the hotel, his death was inevitable.

However, you still watch this tape in order to avoid arousing suspicion from your partner, even though you know the content of the tape by heart, as you do with many other tapes.

"And last, but not least... the righteous detective James! The public has nothing but praises for him, but he's not as sinless as you may think. Some years ago, he served on the jury of a certain trial. His silver tongue swayed his fellow jurors to the wrong verdict, condemning an innocent man. Unable to cope, the man chose suicide over a lifetime in prison. You claim to be so righteous, but yet you brought this man's soul to ruin! For that I sentence you to die a slow and... painful death!"

You smirked quietly and take the dagger, which you have carefully stored for such occasions. You head to the attic, where your partner is staying. Holding the sharp dagger behind your back, you return back to the attic and stand right behind him, a slight smile on your face. Apparently, your partner notices your inaction.

"Y/n? Did you find something?" he asks, turning to face you.

You just smile wider. "Yes. And I brought it with me."

"What is it?" James clarifies, extending his hand towards you.

You hesitate for a moment before stretching your lips into another smile. "Your death."

The dagger flies through the air, landing in the detective's chest with incredible force. But one blow is not enough. You stab him over and over, until blood spatters both of you and James' heartbeat grows quieter and weaker.

Within minutes, the attic is covered in blood. The dead detective's body lies on the wood floor, twitching slightly in convulsions. You watch him, waiting for his life to leave his body completely. A small smile forms on your lips.
"Such a young detective and now dead. I am sorry to have killed you, but your death was inevitable after you came here. I'm sorry, my old friend."

It only took you a few minutes to pin the detective's body against the wall and leave him crucified. The black hair that once reached his shoulders is now in your hands, like a trophy from the victim. Your clothes are stained with his scarlet blood, along with the ritual knife that pierced his throat, a final touch of your signature crime.

time passes quickly. About two months have passed since James' death. The stench of a rotten body in the attic spreads throughout the upper floor of the hotel, but you don't care about it anymore. You perform a small ritual in the room to somehow connect with the other world. Why do you need this? You want to destroy James from all universes. the room is small, there is almost nothing in it, but that's enough for you. Just you, the ritual, and the mirror in front of you. That's enough for you

***

You are getting ready for work. More specifically, you check your appearance before heading off on another assignment. Until the image in the mirror has completely changed, showing you a girl who is a perfect copy of you, but not exactly you. You flinch and move away from the mirror.

"Who are you, and what did you forget in my mirror?" you ask fearlessly, only with confusion.

The girl smiles, her hands resting on the mirror as if she's reaching out to you through it.

It's quite simple, my dear," she answers, and her voice makes the surface of the mirror sway, which can't help but excite you. "I just need you. Or, rather, your place in this world. I'm sorry, but that's fate."

With those words, her hands reach through the mirror and pull you inside. You struggle to fight back, but to no avail. The girl, the Dark You, emerges into your world and smiles. "That's it, dear. I need to be in your body for a while to deal with someone." "I don't care about what you're planning to do! Just bring me back to my own world!" you yell at her, banging your fists on the mirror. But it doesn't let you back into your world

"I'm afraid that's not possible" the Dark You says, clutching the ritual dagger in her hands, with a hairdryer hanging from her shoulder. "I need to kill the person who took another person's life. I promise, will return as soon as I destroys his life!"

You try to scream, but she doesn't hear you, or just doesn't want to listen to you. She is already leaving, and you see the initials "J.B." on the handle of the dagger. Who might that be? You are thinking about this initials for a while, until the realization hits you harshly. "If that's me but in another reality, this initials should belong to someone I know in person, right? But still, who might it be?!" You think for a few more minutes, and another realization hits you once again, as you remembered the only person with such initials you knew. James? James Blackthorne, your old friend? It can't be... You wouldn't let her kill him. But what can you do now? You're stuck in damn small room without anything that might help you. You sit down the floor and look at the mirror, thinking about any possible ways to escape and save your friend's life...
