Sprints and Circuits

Summary:

”Sprints, also called ‘cannonball runs’, are illegal point-to-point road rallies that involves 2 or more racers. They hearken back to the authorized European races at the end of the 19th century. The races died away when the chaotic 1903 Paris–Madrid race was canceled at Bordeaux for safety reasons after numerous fatalities involving drivers and pedestrians.” - Wikipedia

Chapter 1: Ford Mustangs and Untoasted Bagels

Chapter Text

“Zak said you could drive.”

Oscar stared at the curly haired man who had shown up at the front door of his apartment. The man was slightly shorter than him, a bit tan, and spoke with a British accent.

“I- Yeah? People, uh, do that sometimes.” He had no idea what was going on, or why this strange Brit had woken him up at 1 am. Still adjusting to the sudden situation, Oscar blinks the sleep away from his eyes as the man leaned against his doorframe.

“He said you could drive.” The Brit emphasizes, dangling a pair of car keys on one finger, before pushing them into Oscar’s hand, closing his fist around them. A little speechless, Oscar’s mouth makes a weak attempt to form words, only for his mouth to hang awkwardly agape.

“Come to the town square tomorrow night. 11 o'clock. Look for the orange boomerang. Don't be late. Tell them Lando sent you.” The mysterious man turns heel and promptly walks away. Oscar watches him leave, with even more questions than before.

“Weirdo.”

He huffs under his breath, a little agitated his sleep was interrupted. He concluded that the strange man was probably some kind of crackhead, considering he’s never seen this guy around before, although how he had ended up specifically at Oscar’s door was anyone's guess; He was on the 12th floor of his apartment complex, at the end of a corridor, which is too specific to just be chance. He frowned and closed the door, praying he doesn’t have a stalker, and flung the strange keys on his nightstand, grabbing his phone and flopping down on his bed.

Logan: Dude the weirdest thing JUST happened to me

Oscar: Same, you first though

Logan: Some random brexit geezer showed up at my door, handed me car keys, said to meet at the town square at 11pm tmrw and to look for a blue W... seemed nice tho

Oscar stares at the text, a bit bewildered. So there's multiple people, and they’re harassing his friend too?

Oscar: That's literally what just happened to me, except my pom said to look for an orange boomerang, and didn't seem very nice

Logan: You think we should go

Oscar thinks for a moment. This could be a bit dangerous, but what’s the worst that could happen? He and Logan could get drugged and kidnapped…maybe he shouldn’t give it too much thought. Well, you only live once.

Oscar: I mean, it could be fun

Logan: So it’s settled then

Oscar sent back a thumbs up, then set his phone back on the charger. He shuffled around for a few minutes until he could feel his eyes start to droop, hoping he wouldn't get interrupted again. He groaned as his phone chimed again.

He totally had a stalker.

—-

Oscar’s eyes shoot open to the faint blaring of his alarm, sitting up and yawning groggily. He blinks at his beeping alarm clock before realizing the time; 9:54.

“Shit! Shit shit shit- I’m gonna be late, Otmar’s gonna kill me he's gonna fire me -'' He throws off his covers, bolts to his closet for a clean pair of clothes, and nearly eating shit while putting on a pair of pants. Hurriedly, he stuffs an untoasted bagel in his mouth as he runs out of his building, mentally cursing the strange Brit- Lando, or whatever his name was. He’ll just have to ask the new intern for coffee, even if he hated the thought of putting more tasks on an intern's back, knowing exactly how it felt. He winces as he remembers the way Otmar and the other superiors had treated him his first few months on the job, and promised himself he’d tip whatever poor soul was scheduled today, vowing to never turn out like them.

Oscar wolfs down his bagel in a couple of bites just as he jogs into the parking lot of the body shop he was working at, clocking in right before he would've been counted late. Otmar, his boss, glares daggers at him, but doesn’t scold him, which immediately takes off some of the edge. Take the small victories, Oscar reminds himself, not needing this day to be worse than it was already. It was barely 10am, and he already wished the day was over. He was barely able to sit at his workspace when Logan came in, clipboard in hand.

“Ford Mustang in the garage, suspension’s all messed up. Owner specifically asked for you.” Logan set the clipboard in front of him, and nudged his leg with his foot. When Logan finally looks up at Oscar, he makes a weird face. “Err, want me to get you a coffee? No offense, but you look like dogshit.” He says with full, full offense.

Oscar looks up, voice flat and sarcastic.

“Gee, thanks. Just what I needed. Coffee would be great though. Didn’t wanna bother the intern anyway.” He gestured to the 17 year old frantically running around taking orders and almost tripping every time they moved. Logan winces at the sight, almost feeling sorry.

“Ugh, I remember when they treated us like that.” He shuddered, then patted Oscar on the back. “Right, get to work. I’ll get ya your coffee outside.”

Oscar nodded as he dragged his feet over to the garage. Immediately, he stops in his tracks, freezing at the man in front of it.

“Oh, it’s just you. Can you please stop stalking me?”

Lando raised an eyebrow.

“Stalking? Is that what you call this?”

Oscar folded his arms.

“You found my address, where I work, and even my socials, is that not stalking?”

Lando looks away, cheeks a little flushed with embarrassment.

“I…can see how this would look bad. I just wanted to make sure you were coming tonight. And to get my car fixed.” He sheepishly scratched his neck, his eyes now looking anywhere but at Oscar.

“Uh-huh. Well, could you explain what we’re doing tonight? And why you’re also involving my friends?” He speaks as he jacks up the car and looks under it, letting out a low whistle.

“Whoof, how’d you let your suspension get this bad? In fact, everything is bad. Have you ever gotten any work done on this thing?”

Lando chuckled.

“You ask too many questions, mate. You’ll just have to wait and see about tonight. And as for the car, we go on a lot of… adventures together, ties into tonight actually. How soon can you get her done?”

Oscar sat down as he was running some figures in his head.

“Well, the suspension itself takes about five hours, but you’ll need an alignment too. If I rush, I could have her done maybee by 5? It’d run you about $1100, plus an extra hundred for the rush.”

Lando nods eagerly, seemingly paying no attention to the price.

“Right! That’s all fine, she’ll be able to drive tonight though, right? Fast?”

Oscar nodded slowly, a little put off by such enthusiasm before seeing Logan coming into the garage with his coffee. He thanks Logan and turns back to Lando, taking a quick sip out of the cup.

“Be back here after 5 tonight, we close at 8.”

Lando nods again, looking over his shoulder as he gives a small wave.

“See you tonight Osc.”
