the practical friends

Summary:

Tony and Steven working on a project together, something that is important to the both of them, but doesn't have to do anything with either of their jobs, nor the superhero thingy, not an au, those are still in the picture, but this is much more important to them at this point in time (would be sweet if it was kid related but I want to see what you can come up with otherwise, so no kids, either biological or adopted, also no pets because allthough that would be adorable but I'm looking for something interesting, something serious but also something they have fun doing)
Fluff, angst, spice, anything goes ig - grabowskibeepboop

Notes:

This was a hell of a challenge, because your constraints ruled out pretty much everything I can imagine them working on together. My thought process went like this:
* Anything technological relates to Tony’s job with Stark Industries, so it can’t be anything to do with technology.
* Anything magic relates to Stephen’s job as a Sorcerer, so it can’t be anything to do with magic.
* This rules out any kind of research project for them together.
* Not superhero related rules out any kind of diplomacy or recruitment.
* Nothing with kids.
* Nothing with pets.
* It’s serious so it can’t be a joke or a prank.
* It’s fun so it can’t be related to their various mental health issues.

In my brain, this means that there are exactly three options for me to write about:
* Their relationship.
* A hobby that has nothing to do with magic or tech.
* Their friends.

To me “working on your relationship” implies addressing possible problems, unless they’re planning their wedding, and I didn’t feel like writing wedding planning, so I ruled that out.

A hobby didn’t feel serious enough.

Which is how we got to this.

And, uh, this intro is almost longer than the response. Sorry!

Work Text:

“Trapping them together won’t work,” Stephen says. “Wong has access to portals.”

Tony hummed thoughtfully. “Portals can’t be blocked?”

“They can, but believe me when I say that a sorcerer prevented from portalling is in no mood to have a friendly chat with someone they already dislike,” Stephen says dryly.

Sighing, Tony swipes his hand through the hologram and knocks that option off the list they’ve been brainstorming. He considers the remaining options. “There’s no way we can convince Rhodey he needs to take a magic consult,” Tony admits after a moment. “He’d just kick it to me.”

“You couldn’t be unavailable?”

“Not given that Rhodey has access to Pepper,” Tony says.

It’s Stephen’s turn to hum. “Could we bring her in on this?”

Tony snaps his fingers and points at Stephen. “It would make her life easier if your practical friend and my practical friend got along.”

“And we’d have practical input on the project,” Stephen says dryly, and Tony has to laugh.

“I always assumed Rhodey and Wong would get along great,” he says. “It kind of blows my mind that they don’t.”

“Well. Not yet.

Tony nods. Surely, between the two of them, they can fix this.
