Work Text:

Of all the days for it to rain, it had to be while they were about to go on a walk. B didn’t mind the rain, he found the sound quite soothing and it reminded him of some of the rare good times he had at the orphanage. Nny, on the other hand, was furious.

“GODDAMMIT!” He screamed, kicking his foot against the wall. B was impressed that the wall was fine after the impact.

“We can go another day,” B said calmly. He knew any other tone may set Johnny off even more, if speaking itself didn’t do that.

“BUT I NEEDED TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING!” Johnny cried (as in the sound, and the fact that he was now crying).

Beyond walked over to Nny, who was now curled up in a fetal position on the floor, cursing the weather under his breath in between sobs.

“Maybe you can show me it tomorrow when the weather gets better?” B suggested.

Johnny sniffled and looked up, tears still streaming down his face.

“But- but I need to show you it now .”

Beyond looked down at the floor, holding his chin with his thumb and forefinger. He thought for a moment about what he should do. B listened to the sound of the rain. It wasn’t coming down hard outside, and the weather forecast from the afternoon said that it would just be a light drizzle that would last from 11:47 PM to 1:02 AM.

B got up and looked around for an umbrella. This hellhole of a house may be an ever changing nightmare, but Beyond was determined to find an umbrella nonetheless. Finally, after 5 minutes of wandering about, he found a closet with what he was looking for.

He returned to Johnny, who was still moping on the living room floor, with the umbrella in hand.

“What are you doing?” Johnny asked rather defeatedly.

Beyond put on his boots that were left by the door and turned to Nny.

“I want to see what you wanted to show me.”

Johnny’s eyes lit up. “Wait… really? You’d be willing to go out in the rain?”

Beyond smiled at him and nodded.

Johnny finally stood up with a sheepish look on his face. “Are you sure? I mean, I don’t want to make you do something that you don’t want.”

“It’s fine, the rain doesn’t bother me,” B said. “I grew up in Britain for Christ’s sake.”

Johnny smiled and met B’s eyes. “Alright then, um… I suppose we can go…”

“Good!” B opened the front door with a mischievous smirk. “Ladies first ~” Beyond promptly walked outside.

Nny chuckled and took a step on the front porch. There, B opened the umbrella, covering the two of them as they walked out into the rain.

“Where to?” B asked.

Johnny hummed, looking over his yard of loose soil (which was now becoming mud). “I think it was to the left.”

The two turned and began their midnight stroll, with Nny taking the lead and B protecting them from the drizzle.

The air was warm and the rain was soft, creating a pitter patter sound around them. The two talked about random, arbitrary things like the commercials they saw on tv or what crazy things they read in the morning paper (which they stole). The two laughed together and gave each other admiring looks as they spoke.

After a while, Johnny pointed to a park bench sitting underneath a tree. “There! That’s the spot.”

Beyond was confused but walked toward the bench, noticing a large grin on Nny’s face. The two sat down under the tree, which provided shelter from the rain, allowing B to close the umbrella. As he leaned it against the bench, he looked up and saw Nny pointing ahead.

“There it is! I know how much you like those things, so I thought I’d show you it while it was still in bloom.”

Beyond stared ahead in awe. There, he faintly saw various trees covered in what appeared to be flowers. B stood up and walked towards them, trying to get a better view. He didn’t bring the umbrella as he didn’t need it; the soft, warm rain was few and far in between.

As he reached a park light, he was able to get a better look at the marvel in front of him.

A beautiful cherry blossom tree was in full bloom. The pink and white petals seemed to spring from the branches it grew on. The bitter scent still lingered. It was everything he imagined it to be.

It was perfect.

“So…” B looked behind him upon hearing Johnny's voice, unaware that he had come over with the umbrella. “...You like it?”

B turned back around to the tree and looked up at the beautiful blossoms. He smiled contently.

“Yeah… I really like it…”

B took a few steps under the tree. “Come here,” he looked over his shoulder at Nny.

Johnny followed and put the umbrella down under the tree. B sat down, leaning on the trunk of the tree. Nny followed suit and sat to his left.

Beyond looked at Nny and then down at his hand. He reached over and held it. Johnny turned around to look at him, nervously wondering what to do. The two stared at each other for a while, admiration in their eyes.

Finally, B spoke.

“Johnny… I love you.”

Johnny was taken aback at first. He thought he was mistaken as to what he heard, but Beyond continued, “You’re just… so sweet. The fact you saw this tree and thought of me… God, I just…”

Johnny could tell Beyond was having a hard time with his words right now. He didn’t blame him, he was sure that describing your emotions to your crush wasn’t one of the things he was taught in his fancy-schmancy detective grooming school. Or just letting yourself feel emotions at all, for that matter.

Beyond was visibly blushing now as he looked down at the scattered cherry blossom petals on the ground, trying to put together the right words. “It’s… it’s just… and it’s not just this. The way you’ve always been there for me when I’ve… when I tried to-” B choked on his words.

Johnny looked over and saw him tearing up. He knew exactly what he was trying to say.

Johnny crawled over to B and hugged him as he cried.

“Y- yeah,” Beyond said, still sobbing. “Like… like that.”

Johnny looked down at B’s arm. Since it was warm outside, Beyond didn’t think a jacket was necessary. Nny was able to see the thin scars on his arm. He remembered having to talk him out of cutting himself multiple times before. He was glad B was listening to him. Just like how he was listening to B when he told him something similar.

Eventually, the tears stopped flowing. Beyond looked at Johnny with a loving smile. Before the two of them even realized what they were doing, the two kissed.

As they broke away, Johnny smiled back at B.

“I love you, too.”

The two smiled and continued to kiss, Beyond holding Nny’s face as the rain continued to patter. Beyond laid down as Nny held himself above B. Beyond knew that Johnny wasn’t a fan of “the sewage of the organism” (as Nny put it), so he was content just kissing him like this. He loved Nny. He would do anything for him.

After some moments passed, Johnny rolled over to his left side, looking longingly at Beyond.

B smiled back, his eyes half closed. He slowly ran his hand along Nny’s side and stopped at his hip. Johnny’s eyes widened as he began to blush.

“Don’t worry,” B assured him. “I won’t do anything you don’t want me to.”

Johnny smiled as his unease washed away. The two laid there for some time, until the patter of the rain stopped.

By that point, the two stood up, their clothes still damp. Beyond picked up the umbrella and pointed it the way they came from.

“Wanna head back?” he gently asked. Johnny nodded.

As they walked back to their house, the two held hands and Beyond affectionately leaned against Nny.
