Work Text:

It was unbearably bright. Ever since Murr had damaged the curtains, the moon had been shining unhindered into the Chou Chou's small hotel room, especially today on this cloudless night with a full moon. Vanitas' other sleep disorders were bad enough, but today the light topped it all. He was wide awake.

The young black-haired man sluggishly sat up and looked at the window. This disgusting cold light! Quietly, grabbing his coat, he went to the window next to Noé's bed. The vampire slumbered peacefully as the moonlight shone directly on him. How exactly he managed to do this was a complete mystery to Vanitas.

Quietly, so as not to wake his roommate, he opened the window and climbed out onto the roof. He couldn't sleep anyway and it was still warm enough outside. He might as well look at this bluish-white ball from up there.

The roof tiles creaked softly beneath him as he sat down on them and pulled his black coat tightly around his shoulders. Otherwise, it was almost dead quiet.

If even bustling Paris slept once, then it must have been between three and four in the morning. That was probably the best time of the day. He was completely alone and was able to ponder his thoughts in peace.

The moon shone down on him mercilessly. He wasn't sure what others found so beautiful about it or - in the case of vampires - so frightening. The full moon had always reminded him of Luna. Painfully reminded... But there was actually another reason why he couldn't sleep.

For some time now, the face of a certain beautiful female vampire kept popping up in his mind's eye and just wouldn't go away. He saw her everywhere. In flowers, in his morning coffee, he even thought he recognized her when he saw other women of similar stature from behind in the crowd. So badly did he want to meet her that he acted like a grieving idiot. Someone who couldn't stand not having her around all the time. And now... Even this stupid full moon reminded him of her bright hair, her sparkling eyes...

Jeanne...

Vanitas shook his head in resignation. It was about time he fixed the curtains so that he could at least get some sleep and this... longing... (A shiver ran through him when he thought of that word.) Love... (That wasn't any better!) This delusion would soon go away! He just had to let a little time pass. Out of sight, out of mind!

Nevertheless, he wondered if he was the only one who felt this way. Did Jeanne think of him from time to time too? At least in gratitude for rescuing Chloé? Or... At least annoyed because he had teased her and played with her so often in the past? And why did he even wish for her to think about him? Hell, who even wished for someone to think of them in a negative way just to be remembered at all? He sighed. Maybe that was all he deserved.

Exhausted, he rested his arms on his bent knees and let his chin sink onto them. Another sigh. Damn... He really wished she was thinking about him. He wished he could meet her. But then what? How should he react then? There was no room for love in his life.

In the middle of the night, Jeanne sat at her windowsill and gazed out. Ever since Lord Ruthven had woken her from her induced coma, she had had nightmares from time to time. She wondered if it was because of the blue full moon this time.

Normally, the moon in Altus shone red every night. Only occasionally did it shimmer the same blue as the astérisques in the castle courtyard. A symbol of doom for all vampires, but lately... Lately, she couldn't see it that way anymore. It even struck her as somehow beautiful...

As a child, like everyone else, she had been afraid of the stories her parents had told her. Even of the vampire of the blue moon. But Vanitas was the heir to that very vampire and he was nothing like in those stories. He was a good person and she had fallen in love with him.

Her cheeks turned a soft shade of pink as she admitted her feelings to herself again. At first she had disliked this absurd man, but he had shown her time and again that there was good in him and that he really wanted to help her. Now the blue full moon only reminded her of him. What if everyone was wrong and this moon was actually a good sign?

What should she do? The longer she looked up at the sky, the more she thought of Vanitas. She missed him, but her duty forbade her to simply go to him. And what if she saw him? Then she would have to restrain herself so as not to be overwhelmed by her feelings and end up hurting him. After all, no one in the world had blood as sweet-smelling as his.

Jeanne lowered her arms to the windowsill and rested her head on it as she continued to look up at the moon and sighed deeply. She wanted to see Vanitas again. She missed his voice, his cheeky smile, his scent...

He had said he loved her. She still wasn't quite sure how seriously he meant it, but she wondered if he thought about her from time to time.
