Work Text:

Purgatory was a horrible place. The residents showed the worst of themselves, everyone was miserable, and fighting was constant. Some enjoyed the feelings of inflicting suffering to others, while those who didn't received the pain. It was a brutal place, Egg Island.

The woman flinched at the motion. A ringing noise shot through her ears, and her eyes went wide. A clean cut right through her torso. The man before her showed no mercy. Long before they once were friends, partners even. Not romantically, of course. They were close. They raised a son together, watched him depart together, and was there for each other in their best and worst moments. Now, though, was a different time. A time for suffering, a time for pain... the worst kind of pain and suffering. Pain and suffering that was caused by your most loved ones. The man pulled out the sword, bringing it to his side and standing tall in front of the women. The woman reached to cover her wound, bending over in pain and gasping for air. She hated this feeling. After all the times she died, this was the worst one. The one to cause the most pain, the one to cause the most suffering. The woman became light headed from blood-loss, and slowly fell to the ground, unconscious. The man who once stood before her, now walked away.

The man hesitated before stabbing the woman. He was desperate to get it over with, un wanting to hurt her. He watched as she flinched and looked at him, completely hurt. He couldn't believe this is what it had come to. They once had a son together. He had to be the one to tell her the news of his death. They comforted each other, became even closer. She stood up for him, tool care of him, accompanied him at his wedding. This is how he repaid her. He pulled back his sword, bringing it to his side. He watched as she crouched over, arms covering her stomach and blood splat to the ground. She slowly fell to the ground, soon lying there, not moving. He wasn't allowed to feel remorse. Soon after he quickly left to go continue fighting her companions, unable to take one last look at her lifeless body.

Perhaps it was never meant to be, the two of them. Maybe they only truly understood each other, and that lead to their untimely betrayal. Both very hesitant, yet still continuing to carry out such brutal tasks. That was what their world had come to. A desperate, greedy, needy world, where nothing was fair or free. That is what the world is truly like.
