Chapter 1: Paper Wings

Chapter Text

One thing to know about Rio Morales is that she loves her son more than anything. He was her baby, and she would move heaven and hell to protect him; so, when he was 2 years old, and his wings furled out for the first time she fully panicked. they were like paper Mache. That wasn't the problem. The problem was that his wings changed colors and patterns. Her little baby was looking up at her with his big brown eyes and little hearts on his wings. she tried to keep her panic out of her face as she lifted her son to her on the couch and kissed his little forehead. the heart patterns shifted to a solid soft pink and words in random places about how happy he was to have her attention. she smiled and tickled his stomach. her own wings wrapping around them. Her happy boy. the feeling of someone kissing her forehead surprised her. "Hey honey, I'm not losing my mind here, am I? Our son's wings are changing right?" Jefferson Morales liked at his son in awe and slight fear. "Si, mi amor- what are we going to do? I've never seen anything like this before!" Rio spoke in a hushed voice continuing to play with her son until he got fussy. his wings turning gray. "Down Please. I'm hungry." His voice was calm and gentle. Rio put him down and they went into the kitchen while her husband showered and put on civilian clothing.

It took some very hard deliberation and heartache for the Morales to hide their child's wings when he turned 2 years old. They knew that they were trapping their son to the ground most of the time, but after weeks of research there were very rare cases of wings shifting likes Miles's. The ridicule and attention that could come from that wasn't something that they wanted for him. So they taught miles to keep his wings lightly bound to his back. they only were released to groom or to fly around with when he was alone or with his family. At least until Miles was old enough to decide to reveal his wings. That worked for about 12 years. Until the night he got bit by that damned spider and his world changed forever. First it was his version of Peter Parker dying in front of him (whose wings were red like MJ's hair), then it was meeting other versions of spider people and their beautiful wings, then it was learning that his uncle was the prowler, then it was almost losing said uncle when he refused to kill him. Uncle Aaron would never be able to fly again because of him; the bullet did so much damage to both of his oil slick colored wings. He almost gave up when the spider gang decided to give up on him and complete the mission on their own. at least they were nice about it especially Peter B (wing color just like the Peter Parker from his universe). he should have been at the hospital with his uncle, anyway, waiting for him to wake up. But he doesn't, instead he saves the world from collapsing in on itself. Then he is forced to say goodbye to his friends for what might be forever. It was unfair, but like many things that felt unfair, Miles grinned and bared it.
