Henry woke to stifled sobs, the last sound he wanted to hear from the man lying beside him.
“Alex? Love, what's wrong?”
The crying continued, and Henry drew Alex into his arms, kissing the top of his head.
Finally, Alex whispered, “There was a shooter at the school, and you were just- gone. I can't do life without you.”
“Oh, love,” Henry soothed, holding Alex tighter. “Since you wrote your number on my teacup, I've been yours, and you'll always be mine. That's all that matters. I'll always be right by your side for as long as you want me.”
