Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Spring brought Rogers high school their first musical performance. Twobit was quite excited to do a musical, reading bore the living shit out of him. But he was a theater dude so he had to do it but majority of the time he just improvised lines after learning about his character through the read through. He wasn’t that huge of a singer, typically only singing to do impressions of Elvis Presley to annoy his friends. He could hit some notes, so he felt prepared. He was reading through the characters names he could audition for, he never prepared for an audition. Auditioning was always easy, he thought it was a game. Choose one person to impersonate then the director will see if you’d do great as them, do better as another character, or just be a horrible addition to the show. Typically, the director loved his first pick.

Twobit’s finger followed the first characters name, “Sky?” He mumbled out loud. The name seemed to fit his liking.

Sky.

Ponyboy quite often talks about the sky to him, or tries. Ever since the deaths of Dally and Johnny, Twobit spent way more time with ponyboy than he ever had. Twobit had thought that Ponyboy would have talked more one on one with someone but he really was quiet. Not as quiet as Johnny but man he sure was. He had thought at least they were talkers alone but nope this boy really didn’t talk much unless you really let him. But Pony did know how to have fun. When Pony occasionally talked a lot freely, it was during a sunset full of bright colors.

Colors of gold and fire swam across the sky and Pony’s eyes filled with tears, blinking them away he said “Two, look at the sky. I know you don’t look at things like this but look,” he huffed out a breath, choking back tears “i never knew what it meant. Johnny figured it out at the end of his time, too late. He told me to tell Dally about it, but it was too late. We still have time to be who we want to be, Two. I’m sure Johnny would want you to know about the sunsets too”

Twobit was so confused on what that kid was rambling on about. But Twobit knew this was clearly something Ponyboy was emotional about.

“Yea the sunsets are kinda cool I guess, the yellow reminds me of that horrible blonde haircut you had” Twobit harmlessly jokes. Ponyboy punched Twobit in the arm, leaving a light bruise. But after that moment Ponyboy seemed to talk a bit more to him than usual.

He entered the theater with a look of excitement on his face cause he already knew he’d do great with his auditions. Typically more excited than nervous when he had to do auditions. He sat down, folding the paper in all sorts of shapes. The door opened once again, catching Twobit’s attention. His gray eyes shimmered like pure silver, following the women across the room. He knew her. He didn’t know why he couldn’t think of where he'd seen her. An Ex? No?? All of them were blondes. This girl was beautiful and he typically went with ratty girls. A giggle slips from her lips as she approaches another girl in the room. ‘Marcia’. A plethora of memories came springing in as his mind repeated her name. ‘How did I forget?’ he wondered as he saw her walk towards him. She leaned on the wall across him not even batting an eye. A smirk swung across Twobit’s face,he loved to play games with girls.

“Aren’t Burgundians looking for you?” He cocked an eyebrow at her, waiting for her response.
Marcia looked up at Twobit, around, then at him again.
“Sorry?” She apologized, missing what he said.
Twobit stood up, walking close to her, “Hiding from Burgundians?”
Marcia thought, then burst out laughing, “Oh shut it, you look more like droopy than I do to Joan of Arc”
”That..dog?”
”Yea, carrot top”

Twobit brushed his finger through the strains of his greasy hair. He thought the grease made his hair appear more brown but it clearly did not.

Her brown eyes examined his hair “That night you looked more brown to me than red”
Twobit turned around, pushing his comb through his hair, frustratedly, hoping more grease would spread through his hair. Darkening the shade.

“Oh.” Marcia mumbled filled with embarrassment “I didn’t mean it in a bad way”
He flung around and his hair looked worse than she had seen any greaser hair ever. Sure, their hair was long and filled with grease, but they took such great care of it. Like it was a treasure. She surely did not want to touch his hair filled with grease but she impulsively rubbed her hands through it and pulled down Twobit’s signature bangs. They stared at each other for a while awkwardly. Twobit never had anyone other than his mom touch his hair, he never allowed anyone else to. ‘That was weird’ he thought to himself, she didn't even ask.

“Uh, so, what happened to calling me?” Marcia asked to break the silence.Twobit didn’t want to look like a wimp to this chick. He just lied about why so she wouldn’t think he was a puss. “I lost the paper”
“Really?”
”Yes, I never did see you after that and you know what happened. I didn’t think you’d want my number after that anyways”

Marcia made a frown, she hated to think of those times. It seemed as if hatred just lived in the air, though now she realized it always has been that way and maybe it always will be that way.
She ripped off a piece of paper off of her script, writing with a pen across the scrap of paper.

“That’s my number” She handed Twobit it and covered it with her other hand, “don’t loose it this time”

He nodded, giving his signature look.

Auditions were longer than usual. Twobit didn’t realize he had to prepare a song so he just sang a song he heard on the radio everyday. He still ended up getting the role he had wanted. Sky. Marcia got the love interest of this character, Sarah. Friends of Marcia’s weren’t pleased with the casting.

“Why would they cast a greaser to go with a soc?” One of her friends complained while reading the casting list.                                                                                                                           “It’s not like we’re goin together. It’s just acting”
“But he’s a hood. How did he even manage to get that role?”
”Oh I don't know, greasers just can’t do anything other than grease their hair and fight” Marcia sarcastically spitted out in a transatlantic accent.

Everyone at the table stared at her, Cherry included. Cherry knew how Marcia felt about greasers and socs but still followed what everyone else said scared to be an outcast. Randy had talked to Marcia about Greasers being like everyone else but he was really shaken up about Bob being dead so she didn’t get much out of his tumble of words. She sure did agree though, mainly because she was waiting for that call she never received.

“Marcia, no guys are going to marry you if you keep this weird behavior up.”
“Yea, I'm sorry. I was just kidding. I really don’t want to kiss some gross hood” Marcia huffed out. The other girls started comforting her and talked more on greasers.

The first day of rehearsal went great, everyone seemed to be pleased with the roles they had received. Twobit was overly excited about getting to be the love interest of Marcia. He kinda already knew the director was going to make them the love interest because she had adored how much chemistry they had at auditions. Even thought Marcia had chose a completely different character.

“So marcia..” Twobit grabbed her shoulder roughly pulling her to his side, “where do you find yourself going this evening?”
Marcia gigged, “wherever you find yourself”

Twobit smiled at her response, a plan flew across his mind. His arm stayed wrapped around her arm and led her to his broken down car. He was a bit ashamed of his car when he brought her but thankfully it didn't give him much attention. If people saw him with such a bright girl with him people would think she was in trouble.

He opened the door for Marcia, then jumped on the front of the car sliding to the other side. He clearly wanted to impress her more. Twobit grabbed a beer from under his desk and began to drink it as he started up the car. Marcia didn’t like when people drank, they always were just horrible versions of themselves. But when she first met Twobit he reeked of beer and he sort of always does. It’s kinda embedded in him. Him being drunk clearly didn’t change the way he treated girls like all her exes did. So she didn’t mind it much but she still really didn’t like drinking. She shifted in her seat, staring out the window as they drove. Silence swam through the car.
Twobit looked over at her, he pushed his eyebrows together. He wasn’t too good at reading body language but he could notice little things.

He turned his head back to the road, “What’s the matter?”
Marcia swung her head to look at him. “Drinking and driving?”
“It’s no big deal, Marcia. I know how to drive”
“Ditch the drink or I’m out”

Creases drew on his forehead from the raise of his eyebrows. No chick ever really cared for his drinking, which he appreciated because it was a bad habit he had. Also, no chick had demanded him to do something like that. Honestly, he liked that.

“You finish it” he placed the bottle in her lap, throwing a wink at her. She couldn’t help but smile for his wink but she wasn’t one to drink. Marcia rolled the window down and threw the bottle out.
Twobit was surprised that she threw that out of the window. He didn’t even know how to respond to that. He just laughs. Marcia joined in with him,
“You are different” Twobit breathes out in between his giggles. Marcia knew he meant it as a compliment.
