I Know Exactly What I Want And Who I Wanna Be

Summary:

Asher tries to find out who they really are.

Work Text:

Asher opened the bathroom door, locking it behind her. She stepped in front of the mirror, staring into her coconut brown eyes.

She sighed.

Lately, she'd felt as if something was wrong, although she couldn't exactly point it out. She just didn't feel like herself anymore. Ever since she was little, she'd benen different to other kids her age. She didn't like what they liked, didn’t want to do what they wanted to do. And she never understood why.

Looking herself in the mirror, nothing seemed to be different. Her hair was just as dark and long as it always had been. Her smooth caramel skin was still the same tone. She had grown taller in the last couple of months, but that didn't seem to be it either.

There was something that she wanted, something that she felt like she could almost grasp, but wasn't quite there yet. Explaining it to Dahlia hadn't helped her like she thought it would. Usually, Dahlia would easily come up with solutions to all of her problems. This time, it was different.

Dahlia didn't understand Asher - couldn't read her thoughts and put the pieces together for her. Asher was left to solve it by herself. But how?

How could she solve something when she didn't know what the problem was to begin with?

She sighed again.

Some part of her was missing, she just had to figure it out. Ugh, why did life have to be so complicated?

No matter how hard she tried to fit in with everyone else, she always failed. She tried to play dress-up games with the other girls. She tried to care about makeup and boys and cute dresses, but it never really stuck with her. She preferred wearing pants, and putting her hair up into ponytails so she wouldn't feel it. Dahlia liked to say that Asher sometimes acted like a boy, but Asher didn't think that she fit in with them either.

The boys in her class always play-fought and acted tough. They cursed and disrupted her during class, and all they talked about were sports and girls. Asher wasn't interested in any of that.

She truly didn't fit in anywhere.

What was it about her that was so different? Why couldn't she just be like other kids her age?

But most importantly, who was she? Somewhere deep inside, Asher knew that she wasn't entirely true to herself. She often tried to pretend to like what other kids liked to fit in. She never really had time to just... Be Asher. Was it too late to find out who she was? And if it wasn't, who was she and how would she ever figure it out when she had no idea where to begin?

For the third time, Asher sighed. She thought back on Kipo, Dahlia, Troy and Doag. She thought back on all of her memories, and all of the times she had wanted to be someone else than who she pretended to be.

And then, something clicked.

Suddenly, everything made sense. She had the answers that she had been searching for all this time. How hadn't she realized this before? It had been so obvious!

Asher smiled at her reflection in the bathroom mirror before stepping away from it, going to unlock the door.

They knew exactly who they were supposed to be.
