Day 4: Dungeons and Dragons

Work Text:

It is almost noon and Bobby is expecting his family to be at his house soon. He agreed to let the boys use his home for game night. He’s been waiting long for this day to come. Waiting anxiously, he is anticipating who would be the better gambler. Dean has people smarts but Sam has book smarts and is quicker at reading the room. Lost in thought, he is thrown off with the knock at the door.

“Took you boys long enough.”

Sam is the first one in, “Yeah sorry we had to first look for snacks for Dean and then Charlie was not satisfied with what we had so we had to go back.”

The bickering stopped since everyone has a soft spot for Charlie.

Hugging Charlie, Bobby pats her head as he asks, “Did ja get what you wanted, sweetie?”

“Yes uncle Bobby, and don’t call me sweetie, I'm too old for that now.”

“No matter how old you get, I’ll always be older.”

Charlie leans in for another hug and Bobby looks at the boys while embracing her.

“You boys need to be more considerate.”

Sam and Dean just look at each other for a brief moment. The day hasn’t started and they already feel mentally exhausted.

Sam and Dean unload their stuff onto the table and Bobby starts to notice a board game being unpacked.

“Is that for you guys later on after game night?”

Sam lifts the board game over his head, “What? No, this is for game night.”

Bobby looks at Dean, “Don’t look at me, this is all Charlie and Sam's idea.”

“Balls! Well you kids have fun. I’m a be over yonder watching you play.”

Charlie looks at Bobby innocently, “You're not gonna play with us, uncle Bobby? I always wanted to play with you, that's why I chose your house for game night. Please?. I’ll help you throughout the game and I don't promise that you will have fun. But you might, so what do you say?”

Dean being jealous of Charlie always getting her way decides to make fun of her, “Yeah uncle Bobby can you join us pweeeease.”

Charlie immediately turns her attention to Dean ready to attack. Dean braces for it, but is saved by Bobby holding Charlie back.

“Easy child, of course I'll play with you. And Dean, next time Charlie wants to attack you, I'm gonna let her. Now where is Cas at?”

Sam, setting his box down, decides to answer, “He’s outside getting the rest of Charlie's snacks. For someone so thin, she eats a whole lot.”

Charlie, offended, yells at Sam, “Shut up, Sam!”

You shut up, Charlie. I can’t believe we had to go back twice to get your snacks. You know how much time we lost?”

Bobby, being protective, gives Sam the look and says, “Go help Cas with the rest of the bags.”

Sam looks at Dean then rolls his eyes. Heading out, he is cut off by Cas trying to carry every single bag into the house. After the snacks are delivered to the right area, Sam proceeds to take out the board game and hands Bobby, Charlie, Dean, and Cas character sheets.

Dean, studying the paper, looks at Sam and asks, “What’s this?”

Sam holds up the paper he handed out and says. “This is your character sheet. I will pass around the character book. For those that haven't played, you get to now choose what character you want to be. Choose wisely because your survival depends on the characters you have.”

“Homework, Sammy? I thought this was a board game.”

“It is a board game, Dean. You just have to use your imagination to play.”

Bobby points his beer at Dean, “Boy’s got a point. I was all ready to play Clue or Operation. Hell, I will even take Monopoly over this.”

Charlie looks at the group and asks, “What's wrong with Monopoly?”

The boys stay quiet on that question. They don't want her to know about the incident that had that particular board game banned from every other game night.

Sam is finished setting up the board game and looks at everyone, “Okay is everyone finished?”

Bobby throws his paper on the table, ”Yep.”

Sam studying Bobbies paper, “you didn't write anything on your sheet; it's completely blank. What the hell, Bobby?”

“Son, I am way too old to use my imagination. Here, Charlie. Do it for me.”

“Okay,” Charlie quickly gets the sheet of paper Bobby threw and starts writing. Dean slides his paper to Cas, hoping he will do the same thing.

“Do it for me, Cas?”

“Umm..no,” he slides it back to Dean, “I don’t even know what I’m doing either.”

Dean sees Charlie scribbling down words so fast on Bobby’s sheet next to him, he slides his paper near her. Ignoring him, he slips it under her forearm that’s resting nearby. Nudging it over and over again, she gets angry, “Ohmygod, Dean. Stop! Geez. I will help you and your boyfriend too ‘cause if I don’t, we'll be here all night. Okay Bobby, I am making you an Orc.”

Dean laughs at the idea, “Geez, Charlie, tell us what you really think of Bobby.”

Charlie looks back at Dean and states, “It’s about how I feel their traits are to the Character. Like, for you Dean, with all the things going on between you and Cas, I might assign you as a Harengon. That is a class that is loosely based on a rabbit.”

Bobby and Sam both chime in, “Gross.”

Dean hugs his man, “All you guys are just jealous and Charlie, you shouldn't be listening in on that.”

“What do you think I'm doing when I start playing my music out loud? Do you think it's a coincidence?”

Embarrassed, the boys stay quiet for a short time. Charlie hands back Bobby’s paper, “Done.”

“Thanks, Sweetie, so I’m  Orc Bobby?”

Bobby looks at his paper and sees another name, “Girlsack?”

“Actually it's pronounced Girshnak, it means savage hunter.”

Bobby looks at Charlie with pride, “That's my girl, do me a favor and leave the cool names to your uncle Bobby. Don't be naming your brother or his boy toy anything cool. Okay?”

Charlie asks Dean what he wants to be, “I don't know, make me a knight or a wizard, oh does this game have Gandalf?

That's Lord of The Rings, Dean.” Sam explained.

“Yeah but it's the same universe, right?”

Charlie and Sam glance at each other, “Okay, I'm making you a Tiefling.”

“What the hell is a Teafun?”

“It's half demon, half human being. I would normally assign it to Sam but he's the dungeon master.”

“What about that? That sounds rad, how come I can't be the dungeon master?”

Sam throws down the book along with his several sheets of paper, “Sure, Dean. All you would have to do is come up with your own campaign, narrate it, add objects, rules, and a story to fit the narrative.”

Dean looks up at Sam, “You said narrate twice.” Then he turns to Cas for help. Cas points a finger at Dean, “Don't even think about asking me to help, Dean.”

Dean slides back the book and papers to Sam, “Yeah, you can go ahead and keep that.”

Cas looks at his paper and then back at Charlie.

Charlie smirks at his brother's boyfriend, “Don’t worry Cas, I’ll be helping you too.”

Charlie is done with Dean's character and proceeds to work on Cas’, “So I’m thinking that your character’s a gnome.”

Cas looks at his paper, “Why a gnome?”

“Because you're the shortest of the boys.”

“Charlie, I'm six feet tall.”

Dean leans over, and places his hand on his shoulder, “Five eleven.”

Then Sam, “Kid height.”

Cas feeling betrayed- shoots daggers at the both of them.

Sam waits patiently while Charlie helps out everyone with their character.

Thirty minutes pass and Charlie is finally done helping everyone, Sam anxiously grabs his notes, the character sheets, and begins to start the game.

“Welcome warriors of virtue. You are being called to obtain the Helm of Deep, a mystical helmet that makes its wearer virtually indestructible.”

Dean chimes in,”Dude, did you just copy the Juggernaut?”

“No, it's different.”

“How?”

“The helmet never gave the Juggernaut powers; it protected him from psychic attacks. Can I continue now?”

Dean gestures for Sam to continue as he rolls his eyes.

“Now where was I? Oh yeah, you and the rag tag group are tasked with helping obtain this artifact. Though it may not be easy for you, for it is located deep in a chasm protected by a monster that needs it to live.”

The game seemed to be going well in Sam’s opinion since Dean only nodded off once. Dean's character even learned a new spell or two, one of them being a cantrip spell that invokes bugs to swarm on an enemy. Even though the group is still getting used to what die to use, they look like they are having fun.

Sam announces,. “Congratulations you have made it to the peak of the cavern but facing down towards you is a black knight that is wearing the Helm of Deep.”

Dean interjects, “Wait, he's just standing there like a weirdo?”

“Yes.”

“He is surrounded by a cliff and only one way down?”

“Yes.”

“Can he fly?”

“Dean, if you don't stop with the questions, I’m gonna start flicking things at you and no, he can’t fly.”

“Then I play infestation.”

“What? Wait, no I haven't given the details yet.”

“Details, shmetials I play infestation. And with the roll of the die,” Dean tosses it with a smirk, “ Looks like the bugs caused your guy to walk back and fall off a cliff. Game’s over! This was fun. We should do it again.”

Sam looks at his paper, smirks at Dean, “Hey, wait. No. No game over. The Dark Knight is protected by the helm as long as he wears it. So he uses his super strength, having him high jump back to the top of the cliff.”

Cas’ turn is next, “I choose invisibility to sneak up towards the Knight without him noticing.”

Sam hands him the die, “You have to roll to see if you're successful.”

Cas clutches the die to his chest then rolls, “Success! Oh wait, I have to stay quiet. Success.” He whispers to himself, “Since I’m stealthy, I sneak up behind him and remove his helmet.”

Sam looks up and smirks at Cas, “The Rag Tag Team thought they had the Dark Knight, but little did they know-”

“Cantrap!” Dean yells as he rolls the die, making the game come to an official end.

“Haha! Game over, Samantha!”

Charlie chimes in, “Why did you place him on top of a cliff?”

Sam lifts his paper, “I had a vision of the Knight chasing you down the mountain before you and your team worked together to defeat him!”

Charlie, excited about what could have been stated, “That sounded amazing.”

Dean steps in, “Yeah that would have been amazing Sammy. Next time, just make sure he can fly.”
