Work Text:
When they part after their kiss, Chuck is parts hopeful and parts incredibly scared. But when they lock eyes, everything dissolves. It's clear she remembers now, so many emotions filling her, welling up within, with danger of spilling out. And then the tears do spill and she lunges at Chuck again. He holds her and she tells him "I remember, Chuck. I remember." He rocks her through it all, pets her hair, not letting go. She detaches herself just a bit, takes his face in her hands and kisses him again. Now she's got him crying too, so wrecked by emotions and the last few weeks.
They spent several silent minutes just sitting there, healing and holding each other, knowing the other is here with them, not leaving any more. They are safe again.
"Chuck, I remember it all. I love you."
His heart lurches in his chest, agitated from the onslaught of feelings and another tear flows down his already stained cheek.
"I love you too, Sarah. Oh baby."
He gently strokes her cheek, how he's done it so many times and the act is familiar to Sarah, his presence, his comfort, his love is familiar.
"I'm so sorry, Chuck. For leaving the train car. For leaving you."
"No, hey no Sarah. it's alright, it's okay. You're fine, we're safe. Don't say that."
He takes her hand between his and brings them up to his lips, kissing her knuckles.
There is only earnesty and adoration in his eyes, no place for guilt and shame.
They watch the waves crash, calm down a bit, find peace in knowing they're together again.
But then she shivers and he too notices the wind getting sharper, so he suggests with a nudge
"Wanna go home?"
She smiles and nods. He gets up first and offers her a hand, still feeling incredibly tender.
On the way back to his car she knits together her eyebrows and says "... They're leaving. Casey and Ellie and Devon, they're all leaving." This hits her now with her just won back knowledge of what these people mean to her.
He gives her a sympathetic smile, he'll miss them too.
"Can I still see them? Say goodbye to them?"
He considers, "Well, Ellie and Devon are taking their time moving, they'll be here until the end of the week. But Casey left earlier to catch his plane. ... Maybe he's still at the airport? Do you wanna try?"
"Yeah, please let's go."
"Alright, get in."
They arrive at the burbank airport and hurry inside, feeling a little overwhelmed by it's size.
"He's going to Germany, Dresden. Be on the lookout for that."
"Got it."
Running through the halls, searching the monitors, combing through masses they worry they might be too late. But then Sarah spots a burly figure leaving the hall at the other end and she starts running, Chuck close behind her.
"Casey!" she shouts, attracting the looks of other passengers.
They're still too far away.
"Casey!" this time together, still no reaction from him.
Now much closer she tries again, "Casey!" and this time he turns around alert, confusion apparent on his face. He spots them in the crowd, barreling towards him and he looks worried.
When they're close enough he asks "Walker? What are you doing here? What's going on?"
She stops in front of him, huffs from running, Chuck doubling over behind her. A big grin reveals itself on her face and she states plainly "I remember, Casey. Everything."
The worry falls from him and instead is replaced by joy. He's not the most emotive person but even some stranger could tell he was relieved.
"So you're back huh. I'm glad."
"Me too."
"So how'd it work? How'd you get the memories back?"
This time Chuck answers, "Morgan's never gonna let us live this down, but it was actually his magical kiss theory."
Casey clearly didn't expect that and just grunts.
"So what are you doing here?"
Sarah seems a little affronted by that and scoffs.
"I didn't get to say goodbye to you! I mean you did say goodbye but I wasn't ... myself then. What I'm saying is, I also want a hug."
If it was Chuck asking for another hug he'd say No, but he can't say No to Sarah, no one could.
He's moved by the request but he's definitely not gonna tell anyone. He just opens his arms and hums, an invitation of sorts.
Gleefully she accepts and hugs him.
There's even a smile that steals itself onto his face but if Chuck would tell on him he'd call him a liar.
They seperate again and Sarah asks him "So you're going after Gertrude huh?"
Casey nods, giving a tight lipped smile and says "Yeah."
"You don't know when you're coming back do you?"
"Yup."
There's a moment of quiet in which he understands, she means she's gonna miss him even if she doesn't say it.
"Well, good luck in finding her and I hope you two figure out what you have." Her wish is sincere and Chuck adds "You know, you're always welcome at ours right? Visit us sometime, maybe we'll have bought the house by then."
"Alright, that's enough with you two saps. I have a flight to catch."
"See you around." Chuck says and Casey just gives them a nod and turns back on his way.
There's something bittersweet about watching him leave, making a clear cut between their time together and their coming time with this family all strewn apart.
Chuck wraps one arm around her shoulders.
"Feel better now?"
"Yeah, I'm glad we still caught him.
Let's go home now, Chuck."
Back at the apartment, they immediately go over to Ellie and Devon's, after knocking it's actually Mary that answers, with Clara on her arm.
"Hello Chuck! ... And Sarah?"
"Hey Mary." Sarah grins big again at the sight of her niece.
"Hi Mom, hi baby Clara. Can we come inside?"
"Yeah sure. What's this about?"
But Mary can already guess what's going on, the way Chuck and Sarah interact, the way Sarah seems so comfortable and at home here so she asks "You remember, don't you?"
When Sarah looks at her there are so many apparent emotions on her face, and she brings out a "Yeah, I do." with a big grin.
Chuck has gone to the stairs and yells for his sister and in-law.
"Ellie, Devon! Can you guys come down for a second?"
"Hi Chuck! Yeah, we're just gonna finish this real quick- ..okay Coming!"
Then Ellie descends the stairs and explains "Sorry we were just wrapping something up for transport-" but stops herself when she spots Sarah.
"Sarah! Oh my God, hi. It's so good to see you, what are you doing here?"
But as soon as Ellie's at the foot of the stairs Sarah is already hugging her, which she reciprocates a little bewildered.
"I remember, Ellie."
"Oh God! Oh Sarah." When Ellie hears this she tightens her hold immediately.
Devon is right behind them on the stairs, gives Chuck a surprised look, then a laugh breaks out and he goes in for a group hug.
"Welcome back, Sarah."
When they seperate again Ellie tells her "I'm so glad you're back, we missed you. Chuck missed you so much. And I'm also glad that we're not gonna leave him here by himself. Ugh"
"This is the best news ever, really guys, haha!" Devon adds.
That night when they go to bed, they shuffle under the blanket, as close as they can and sigh, content.
Holding her close is something he'd missed so much at night, not being able to sleep much at all.
The next morning they visit Morgan and Alex across the courtyard to bring them the good news. Morgan literally picks Sarah up and spins her around then tries to do the same with Chuck and fails. Alex too hugs them both, relieved that the situation found a happy end.
There is still a lingering feeling in her body the next few days, a bit disoriented, but just having Chuck near is making it all easier. And it's not like she's still forgotten anything again, it's rather remembering random things here and there, moments just jumping into thought without any call for them. She finds herself remeniscing a lot, but also looking forward to their future, now so close to grasp.
She's bustling up their apartment quite a bit, bringing out all the photo books, the cards, the souvenirs from trips taken.
Sarah has decided and Chuck agreed wholeheartedly, that they would come with the Awesomes to help them with their moving act and get to know their new place. The night before they all went on the road, they were doing a little barbeque in the yard, putting a final scene at the end of their shared time here. They couldn't hide it and all got a little emotional as it got late and many hugs were exchanged even though they would make the trip together tomorrow. Love makes you do sappy things like that.
