First impressions matter

Summary:

With a small smile, he offers the guy a napkin, whose eyes widen with surprise, even if he takes it with his free hand. “Uh?”
“Something to clean your mouth? You have blood on your lip.”
The boy changes from raising an eyebrow at him to touching his lip, being surprised as he does get his finger stained with blood, making him laugh a little bit.
“...Thanks. Um, sorry, what’s your name?”
“Ah, Kensuke! Ken it's fine.”
“I’m Mamoru. Nice to meet you, Ken-kun!”

Work Text:

“I don’t want him to come!”

“Dad, you said I could go with you tonight!”

“You two-”

“And besides, why do you wanna go, uh? Just wait for dad to be back and take you!”

“I will not do two trips-”

“I don’t want to stay alone here!”

“Aww, are you scared? Ken-chan, think the monsters will eat you if you stay here alone? What did you tell mom? That you could do it? Do you also get scared when you’re alone here before we’re back?”

“Don’t say stupid stuff, Kira-nee!”

He can only push his sister’s hand away as she tries to pinch his cheek, before he feels his father putting a hand on both of them, making them stop.

“Kirara, Kensuke. If you don’t stop it now, neither of you will be going out tonight.”

“...”

“...”

“That’s what I thought. Kensuke, your bag. Kirara, you have to call me-”

“I know.”

“Do you really?”

“When my friend’s dad picks us, and when we’re at their home.”

“And when you wake up.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

Rolling his eyes as his sister's obvious lie -she won't sleep- he grabs his bag, quickly running back to them.

“Dad, I’m ready.”

“Okay, go get in the car, both of you.”

“Yes~”

“‘Kay!”

—o—

It is exciting, no matter what. As the commissioner, his father gets to drive around the police car. It's clear he's doing so to give a message to any possible suitors for his sister, but again, he had a night shift, and considering he technically couldn't leave him alone, as his mother was on a trip, he's allowed to ride with him as well.

They get rid of his sister soon enough, and on the way back, they'd buy some burgers from their preferred restaurant.

It promised to be a calm night. Only when his father stopped to buy some food for themselves and the ones at the station while he stays inside of the car, Kensuke realizes that it might not be it.

He wouldn’t have noticed first, had it not been that he was bored, looking at the mirror. There was nothing much going on, he’s sure that the fast food restaurant is the only place on that street still open, so the noise as well is loud enough to make him look.

And that’s when he sees them. Two boys that look older than him are arguing, or rather, one of them is arguing, while the other tries to ignore him. That one tries to walk away, going on what seems to be a park, when he’s pushed from behind, falling to the floor. And then, he also pushes the other, both starting to fight.

“Okay, got it all. Let’s go.”

“Dad?”

“Mh?”

“There’s two guys fighting.”

With that, his father immediately turns serious, and goes to them.

Of course, he can only get out of the car and follow him.

“You two!”

—o—

Well.

He didn’t expect his night to go like that, but he can’t say he has complaints. Though, sitting in the front of the car with two older teenagers in the back fighting isn’t what he expected, it’s different.

His father is outside the car, just close enough to intercede if anything happened (Though, he doubts that, as they’re both handcuffed) as he probably calls the station to know what to do with them.

One of them is too loud, and he can tell that he was the one starting the fight, while the other simply seems annoyed by it all, purposely looking outside the window, ignoring the other.

And of course, as if being inside of a police car isn’t enough, he keeps provoking him that even Kensuke feels like chiming in to tell him to shut up.

“You’re lucky. If it hadn’t been for the stupid cop, you can be sure I would’ve done more than simply pushing you.”

“...”

“What, too scared to say anything? This isn’t over, Fujimura. You value that stupid thing, don’t you? Take good care of it, don’t lose it. Cause if I find it, you can be sure I’ll-”

“Ah, I see.” The boy with that fluffy burgundy hair just meets his eyes in the mirror, giving him a small smile as he opens his mouth. “...Sorry, that you have to see this when with your father.”

“No, it’s fine…”

“I'm talking to you! You're so cocky for someone with no-”

“Hey!”

Kensuke does feel relief as his father quickly imposes over the loud kid, getting in the car and starting to drive. He does have to call their attention again as they’re shoving each other, but Kensuke is sure that his father was also on the other boy’s side, purposely ignoring commenting when he finally decides to give him a hard shove as he gets pissed. It’s a tense mood until they get to the police station and they’re separated into different rooms until someone comes to pick them up.

Of course, the loud boy was also a pain with everyone, while the other quietly said his name and who to call, and was now waiting in the room already without the handcuffs, simply looking around while there was no one.

His father and some of his coworkers were now handling getting their tutors as they were both indeed still minors, and he’s left trying to not bother, until his father calls out to him, handing him some coins.

“Kensuke, do me a favor and get him something to drink if he wants to.”

“Aren’t you going to talk to him?”

“Yeah, but I have to wait for his tutor to be here. Help me out while we contact the other kid’s parents?”

“Sure.”

His father goes to probably talk to the other boy, and he knocks on the door to let him know he’d go inside.

Fujimura looks at him with some curiosity, raising an eyebrow at him.

“Yes?”

“Sorry, do you want anything to drink?”

“Just water, thank you.”

“Got it. And, here.”

“Nice to meet you too, Mamoru-san! Although… Not in these circumstances. I’ll be back with that water soon!”

And he does. When he gets there, the boy perks up, quickly grabbing the water and giving it a big gulp that makes Kensuke smile. With that, he leans against the wall, watching at him while waiting for anything else. He definitely doesn’t feel threatened by that boy, in fact, all the contrary. “That guy’s a pain, right?”

“You have no idea… I thought ignoring him would make him get bored of it, but I only made it worse.”

“Has this been going on for long?”

“Yeah, a few weeks… He saw me tonight too and decided to come for me. And I thought I could enjoy a bit of the breeze~”

“Well, tonight’s a good night.”

“Right?! It’s perfect for walking!”

As their eyes meet they both laugh, and Kensuke is ready to ask him something else, stopping as the door opens.

“Sorry, Fujimura-kun, I’ll be with you in a second.”

With a move of his head, he knows that he has to get out, with his father getting a hand on his shoulder. “Care to do me another favor?”

“Nope.”

“Get them both a snack, whatever is okay.”

“‘kay.”

His father grins at that, and Kensuke protests as he ruffles his hair, pushing his hand away.

“Dad!”

“I’ll leave it to you.”

Rolling his eyes he goes to the vending machine barely outside of the station yet again, and picks some common stuff without thinking about it too much.

His attention is picked as he notices two women entering in a rush, and briefly, wonders if anything happened to them, but they didn’t seem hurt, even if worried, so he simply goes back inside, before hearing them talking to the officer in the reception.

“Sorry, we were told our kid was here, he-”

“Ah.”

That was it.

Staring at them again, they remind him of Mamoru. The blond is taller than average, and looks like the most classy of the two, while the other is definitely more like Mamoru, dressing more cozy than her partner.

Still, he can’t stare much longer at them, as he notices his father coming up to them as someone probably called him over.

“Good evening. Are you…”

“Fujimura Mamoru's tutors.”

“They told us he was okay, can we see him? What’s the problem? What did Mamoru do?”

As his father gets into explaining it, Kensuke goes back to the room behind the interrogation room, and stares at the boy still alone in the other room. The other one, who wasn’t Mamoru, was certainly being an asshole even to his own parents, arguing with them.

Mamoru seems more annoyed than angry about it all, so he can only wonder what really made him fight like that, at least, before the two women enter the room.

“Mamoru?”

That makes the boy perk up with surprise. Kensuke also stares as his father goes inside the room, once again ready to talk with him.

“Shion, Kae-san. I-”

“Really, you. What do I always tell you if you can’t sleep?”

“...Stay around.”

“Yes. And I thought it was implied to not go fight other boys, Mamoru. Do you know the scare we had when we were called in the middle of the night by the police and couldn’t find you in your bed? Just what happened?”

That makes the boy look down again, frowning. “Sorry. I… can’t tell you.”

“Mamoru-kun. They’re saying you assaulted another boy. You understand that you cannot simply say nothing, right?”

“...”

“Fujimura-kun, if the other boy decides to press charges, we’re going to have to investigate. It’s better if you tell us your side of the story now, kid.”

“Mamoru. What happened?”

“It’s nothing.”

Kensuke knows that the boy isn’t happy either when both the women sigh, sharing a stare with each other.

“I apologize. Could you leave us alone for a moment?”

“Of course, ma’am.”

Kensuke watches as his father leaves the room, leaving both women with the teenager, who’s now seemingly trying to ignore both of them, looking down as he makes himself smaller in the chair.

His attention is back on the room he himself was in, as his father gets inside it.

“Hey. Sorry you have to see all of this, Ken-chan.”

“I don’t mind. He’s not at fault, can’t you do anything?”

“Not if he doesn’t say it. I can’t exactly take what you tell me, even if I know it’s true, unless either of them talks about it.”

“That sucks.”

“Yeah. And that other boy is certainly trying to twist everything.”

“Why is he so angry with Mamoru-san even?”

“No idea. He won’t talk about it, just that Fujimura-kun was the one to start. He better decide to talk for his own good. And-”

His father stops as one of the women asks him to come back, and Kensuke follows after him, hoping to be able to talk with Mamoru, too. When they enter the room, the one that isn’t sitting talks to them.

“Would it be alright to make a call for someone to help us out?”

“Of course, that’s okay.”

“Thank you. Just one moment, please.” With that, she turns to the other woman still sitting at Mamoru’s side, who’s trying to talk to him even if he doesn’t seem any more willing than a few seconds ago. “Kae. I’ll call Iijima-san so he can help us figure out what to do if-”

The woman, his father, and Kensuke himself are startled as they finally hear something else from the teenager, who’s now shouting in pain.

Kensuke can only stare in awe, though, as a single pinch in his hand is the cause of it all. The sweet woman has a firm expression that reminds him a bit of his mother when she was angry…

“HURTS- STOP, STOP IT- KAE-SAN-!”

“Mamoru-kun. Are you going to tell us what happened, yes or no?”

“YES! YES, I’LL TELL YOU-”

With that, the grip is gone, and the older boy rubs his hand, hiding it in his long sleeve as he seems to pout? At the woman still sitting at his side. “Kae-san! That was so cruel!”

“Wow. Haven’t seen you doing that in a long time, Kaede.”

That woman is certainly amused, covering her mouth.

“Oh, shut it, Shion. We’re hearing you, Mamoru-kun. Tell what happened to the officer.”

The boy sighs, and as he tries to avoid eye contact with his tutor, he catches sight of him, perking up.

“Kensuke-kun!”

“Sorry for intruding! I, uh, got you a snack.”

“Ah…”

Mamoru gives a small stare to the woman at his side, who turns to him, smiling. “Mamoru-kun. I don’t think I have to remind you anything.”

And… anything remaining of that aloof aura is gone as he seems to get even smaller on his chair, forcing a smile at him.

“Th- Thank you, Kensuke-kun! That’s so kind of you! Uh, um, sorry! Could you come over here and tell them what you heard in the car, please? I… Didn’t start the fight, I only defended myself! You heard that, right?!”

“Yeah.”

“Kensuke?”

“The other boy said he’d take his stuff, uh, what was it, even?”

“My music player!”

“Okay, and if we can prove that, why did you two fight, anyway? Are you acquaintances?”

“Not… Exactly. But we know each other. Um…” With that, Mamoru looks at the woman again, and scratches the back of his neck. “He’s the brother of the girl that fought with Chiyo.”

Even if that doesn’t tell anything to him and his father, it’s clear that they understand at that moment, both sighing.

“Sorry, I’ll explain it to you. Mamoru separated those girls when they were fighting, they put the other girl a note, you can check with the school, so…”

And with that new information, it didn’t take long for the other boy to admit that he was being a jerk (not in those words) and was trying to take advantage of the situation by Mamoru not trying to make it a bigger mess, to harm him.

In a small way, Kensuke can understand that he just simply wanted to protect that other girl that apparently was like a little sister.

With all of that solved, the only thing left was going back home, and Kensuke stares as Mamoru is sitting all ready to go, waiting for the women talking to his father while thanking him. As well, he was talking on the phone, and Kensuke waves at him as he goes to sit with him.

“I swear! Kae-san was mean, a whole lot! It hurt! And if she finds you out of bed when we’re back, she’ll do the same to you! Shion won’t defend you, she didn’t defend me!”

It’s both a small threat and he was clearly pouting about it, and Kensuke can’t help but find it endearing.

With a little bit more, Mamoru ends the call, and then turns to him.”

“Sorry, Ken-kun. You had… Time with your father, didn’t you? I must’ve messed up with it.”

“No, no, don’t mind. It promised to be really boring otherwise, so I’m glad to see him working.”

“Is that so… Then, something good came out of today!”
Mamoru beams at that, and it’s… cute, in a way.

Kensuke can’t help but stare.

“And that guy won’t bother you anymore, or you’ll have proof to dismiss him. And if he ever does, come get my dad! I promise he’ll figure out a way to help!”

“I’ll do so! Thank you, Ken-kun! Ah, and thank you for the snacks! How much was it? I’ll pay it back!”

“It’s nothing, don’t mind.”

Not as if he had paid for it, but he was sure his father would say the same thing.

And thinking of him, he was back with the two women who were ready to leave, making Mamoru stand up.

“Then… I hope to see you again, Ken-kun?”

“Yeah. Take care, Mamoru-san.”

“Thank you so much and we’re sorry for the trouble.”

“It’s nothing. Have a good night.”

“You too!”

As they leave, Kensuke keeps staring at Mamoru, who’s now pouting at the women, all previous tension completely lifted.

It makes him a little happy, even if it seemed like the end of it.

“It’s late, but do you feel like going to get something else, Ken-chan? Snacks or something to take home? We can do another round with the car”

“Sure!”

At least, even if he didn’t see Mamoru again, he would have a story to tell to his friends after winter break.

—o—

"Mamoru!"

"Uh?"

He finds it endearing as the older boy turns around surprised, before quickly getting shy as he does take the short kiss.

When they pull apart they both smile, coughing as the honk coming from the car alerts the ones inside the house, coming out to greet the boy.

"Then... See you on Monday at school, Ken-kun?"

"Yeah! Bye!"

With a small laugh, they wave as they each go their way, and it's his sister ruthlessly starting to drive that breaks the moment, making him sigh as he slumps on the seat.

"I'm glad it went well. Told you guys you'd love him."

"I guess so. I'm so disappointed, really."

"...What?"

"Mamoru-kun looked like a nice boy~ You told me dad arrested him! And all this time I thought our Ken-chan was into bad boys!”

His sister laughs out loud as she stops at a traffic light, moving to pinch his cheeks. Of course, he already knows what she plans to do, pushing her hands away.

"Ah? Nee-san, that's your own taste. Besides, Mamoru can fight, but he's not a brute. He has no reason to, really. Unlike you, you’re too brute. I’m surprised you even have dates."

“Mh~ That’s because I’m plenty pretty and interesting, Ken-chan!”

“Like I said- I’m surprised.”

He knows he messed up when his sister lets go, simply smiling as they get closer to their home.

“Mom doesn’t know, right? Ah~ I’m sure she’d love to know that’s how you meet Mamo-chan and not actually at school!”

“Wait- Kira-nee! Mom also doesn’t know you dumped that guy in your club and you’re now dating that girl in the higher grade!”

“And how do you know that, uh?”

“I saw your update!”

“You have me on social media?!”

“Mom made me follow you, you blocked her!”

“...”

“Don’t tell mom and I won’t tell mom.”

“Yours is worse.”

“I know more things about you that I can tell mom.”

The trip back home was something, but at least, he’ll be able to invite Mamoru on a date paid for by his sister. Of course, he’ll have to give up dessert for some weeks as well, but he can do that if he gets to hang out with Mamoru.
