Work Text:
Gyuvin couldn’t remember when it had all started. The teasing had always been there—about the clothes he wore, the food he ate, the jokes he told. Recently, though, it had escalated to teasing him about relationships.
They were sitting on the couch in Gunwook's new apartment. Taerae was talking about his latest boyfriend, complaining about how he was starting to get on his nerves, but that he was too good of a kisser to break up with just yet.
Gyuvin had a feeling he knew where this conversation was heading. As usual.
Gunwook just laughed at Taerae's words, absentmindedly scrolling through his Instagram. He didn’t seem particularly interested in the conversation, and Gyuvin silently hoped the topic would change soon.
"Wait, Gyuvin! When was the last time you kissed someone?" Taerae asked suddenly, his eyes lighting up with mischief.
Gyuvin sighed internally. He knew this was coming. It wasn’t that his lack of romantic experience embarrassed him; he was just tired of having to explain himself every time.
"Taerae, you always ask this. Can't you find something better to talk about?” Gunwook spoke up unexpectedly, looking up from his phone. Gyuvin glanced at him, feeling a rush of warmth at his casual defense.
In that moment, a reckless thought shot through Gyuvin’s mind. He wanted to kiss Gunwook. It was an impulse so sudden, so overwhelming, that before he could fully process it, he found himself leaning over and pressing a quick kiss to Gunwook's lips.
It was over before he even realized what he had done. Gyuvin felt the blood drain from his face, panic rising, but he forced himself to stay calm.
"Just now," he answered Taerae, trying to sound nonchalant, even as he avoided looking at either of them directly.
He didn’t miss the way Gunwook’s face turned a deep shade of red, though, and he was sure his own face looked just as flushed.
Taerae let out a laugh that broke the tension. "I think I should leave you guys alone," he teased, standing up to leave.
Gyuvin barely registered the sound of the door closing behind Taerae, too focused on the fact that he had just kissed Gunwook—his friend.
Wait. His friend, who he’d felt an unspeakable tension with every time they were in the same room together for the past several months.
Was it really that strange to kiss a friend? The thought lingered as Gunwook re-entered the room, the air suddenly charged with a different kind of electricity.
"That was…" Gunwook started, his voice unusually quiet. "Not a real kiss." He walked slowly toward the couch where Gyuvin was still sitting, frozen in place.
Gyuvin swallowed hard, his heart pounding. He had no idea what to expect.
"This is what you call a kiss." Gunwook’s voice was a low murmur as he leaned in and kissed him again, this time with an intensity that took Gyuvin’s breath away. Gunwook’s lips were firm and insistent, and when his tongue brushed against Gyuvin’s lips, he couldn’t suppress the soft moan that escaped.
In the next instant, Gunwook was straddling his lap, fingers tangling in Gyuvin’s hair as he deepened the kiss, making up for all the tension that had been simmering between them for months.
Gyuvin's hands found their way to Gunwook’s waist, pulling him closer as the kiss grew more desperate. It felt as if all the unspoken words and unresolved emotions between them were finally being unleashed.
And in that moment, as they held onto each other, everything just clicked into place.
They eventually pulled apart, both breathing heavily, eyes wide as if neither could believe what had just happened. Gyuvin’s mind was spinning. This wasn’t how he’d imagined things going—if he’d imagined them at all. But now that it had happened, there was no taking it back.
Gunwook was the first to speak. "Well, that escalated quickly," he said with a nervous laugh, still straddling Gyuvin’s lap.
Gyuvin chuckled, though it came out more as a shaky breath. "Yeah, you could say that."
For a moment, they just stared at each other, the air thick with unspoken questions. Gunwook finally broke the silence.
"So, uh… what now?"
Gyuvin hesitated. He wasn’t sure what the right answer was. He wasn’t even sure what he wanted—except that he didn’t want to lose whatever this was between them.
"I don’t know," Gyuvin admitted, finally. "But I think… I think I liked that."
A slow smile spread across Gunwook’s face, relief evident in his eyes. "Yeah. Me too."
Gyuvin felt a weight lift off his chest. Maybe this didn’t have to be complicated. Maybe they could just… see where things went.
"Do you think… this changes anything?" Gyuvin asked cautiously, not wanting to assume anything.
Gunwook leaned back slightly, considering the question. "I think it can, if we want it to." He paused, searching Gyuvin’s face. "Do you want it to?"
Gyuvin bit his lip, trying to sort through the jumble of thoughts and emotions swirling inside him. He’d never really considered the possibility of something more between them, but now that it was out in the open, it didn’t feel so strange. In fact, it felt oddly right.
"Yeah," Gyuvin said, more sure of himself now. "I think I do."
Gunwook’s smile widened, and for a moment, Gyuvin forgot how to breathe. "Good," Gunwook replied softly. "Because I’ve kind of been wanting this for a while."
Gyuvin blinked, taken aback. "You have?"
Gunwook nodded, a hint of nervousness creeping back into his expression. "Yeah. I didn’t know how to bring it up, though. I didn’t want to make things weird between us."
Gyuvin’s heart swelled at the confession. "You should’ve told me. We could’ve been figuring this out together."
Gunwook laughed lightly. "I guess we are now."
They shared a quiet moment, the atmosphere between them warm and charged, but no longer uncertain. Gyuvin felt a surge of gratitude for the impulsive kiss that had pushed them past the barrier they hadn’t even realized they were building.
"So… where do we go from here?" Gyuvin asked, reaching up to gently touch Gunwook’s cheek, his thumb brushing against his skin.
"Well," Gunwook began, leaning into the touch, "how about we start by not overthinking it? We can figure it out as we go. Together."
"Together," Gyuvin echoed, liking the sound of that.
Gunwook leaned down and kissed him again, slower this time, less hurried, as if savoring the moment. Gyuvin felt all the doubts and worries melt away, replaced by something warm and comforting.
As they pulled away, Gunwook slid off Gyuvin’s lap, settling next to him on the couch. He intertwined their fingers, holding Gyuvin’s hand tightly as if to assure him that this was real.
They sat there in comfortable silence for a while, just holding hands, letting the new reality of their relationship settle in. The TV hummed quietly in the background, forgotten, as they leaned into each other.
Eventually, Gunwook broke the silence with a soft question. "Want to order some food? We can talk more… or just hang out."
Gyuvin nodded, smiling at the simplicity of the offer. "Yeah, that sounds good."
They picked up where they left off, this time with an added layer of intimacy that neither of them had dared to hope for. As they browsed through the takeout menu on their phones, Gyuvin couldn’t help but feel that whatever happened next, they’d figure it out—together.
And for now, that was enough.
---
The next day, Gyuvin woke up with a mix of excitement and nerves fluttering in his stomach. He replayed the events of the previous night in his head, still trying to wrap his mind around the fact that he and Gunwook had crossed that invisible line from friends to something more. It didn’t feel real—yet, at the same time, it felt like the most natural thing in the world.
As he got ready to meet up with their friends, Gyuvin wondered how they should handle things in front of them. Should they tell them? Keep it low-key? He was still mulling it over when he received a text from Gunwook.
Gunwook: hey, how are you feeling about today?
Gyuvin smiled at his phone, feeling a wave of warmth at the simple message.
Gyuvin: little nervous, but good. What about you?
Gunwook: Same here. Let’s just play it cool and see how it goes. We don’t have to tell them anything if we’re not ready.
Gyuvin: Sounds good. See you soon.
With that settled, Gyuvin finished getting dressed and headed out to meet the group. They had planned to meet at a trendy café downtown, a usual spot for their weekend hangouts. When he arrived, Taerae, Hanbin, Ricky, and Zhang Hao were already seated at a large table near the window, laughing over something Zhang Hao had just said.
Gyuvin approached the table with a wave, and Gunwook, who had arrived just before him, flashed him a quick, reassuring smile. As Gyuvin sat down, he couldn’t help but notice the way Gunwook’s hand brushed against his leg under the table, a subtle touch that sent a pleasant shiver up his spine.
"Morning, Gyuvin!" Taerae greeted him with a grin, his eyes twinkling with their usual mischief. "So, anything exciting happen after I left last night?"
Gyuvin’s heart skipped a beat, but he forced a casual smile. "Nothing much, just hung out for a bit."
Gunwook chimed in smoothly, "Yeah, just the usual. How about you guys?"
Zhang Hao rolled his eyes. "We were talking about the same old stuff—Hanbin was complaining about his boss, Ricky about his neighbors, and Taerae about his boyfriend. You didn’t miss much."
"Speaking of which," Ricky cut in with a smirk, "how’s the boyfriend, Taerae? Still driving you crazy?"
Taerae sighed dramatically. "You have no idea. But I’m still not ready to give up on him just yet."
The conversation flowed naturally, with the group slipping into their usual rhythm of banter and jokes. Gyuvin felt a sense of relief that nothing felt awkward or out of place. But he couldn’t help but notice the occasional glance Gunwook sent his way, a silent check-in that only he seemed to catch.
At one point, Hanbin leaned in, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "By the way, did something happen last night? You two seem a little… different today."
Gyuvin felt his pulse quicken, but before he could respond, Gunwook answered calmly, "Nah, we’re just a little tired. Didn’t get much sleep last night."
Gyuvin almost choked on his coffee at the unintended implication of Gunwook’s words, but Gunwook gave him a barely perceptible wink, and Gyuvin bit back a laugh.
Hanbin eyed them suspiciously for a moment before shrugging. "Well, you two seem closer than usual, but I guess that’s a good thing."
Ricky, who had been scrolling through his phone, suddenly perked up. "Hey, they’re playing that new movie we’ve been waiting for at the theater down the street. What do you guys say? We grab tickets and catch it after this?"
The suggestion was met with enthusiastic agreement, and soon they were all heading out of the café, chatting animatedly about the movie. As they walked, Gunwook fell into step beside Gyuvin, their arms brushing occasionally.
When they reached the theater, the group lined up to buy tickets. As Gyuvin fumbled with his wallet, he felt Gunwook’s hand subtly press against the small of his back, a comforting gesture that made Gyuvin smile. It was these small moments—unnoticed by the others—that reassured him that whatever this was between them, it was real.
Inside the theater, they settled into their seats, Gyuvin finding himself next to Gunwook. As the lights dimmed and the previews began to play, Gunwook’s hand found Gyuvin’s in the darkness. They sat like that through the entire movie, their fingers intertwined, the connection between them growing stronger with each passing minute.
After the movie, as they spilled out into the bright afternoon light, their friends were still buzzing with excitement about the film. Taerae, ever the observant one, shot them a knowing look but said nothing, choosing instead to engage Ricky in a debate about the movie’s plot twist.
Gyuvin felt a sense of ease wash over him. It was clear that their friends were starting to pick up on the change, but no one was making a big deal out of it.
As the group began to disperse, making plans for their next meet-up, Gunwook turned to Gyuvin with a soft smile. "Want to grab dinner? Just the two of us?"
Gyuvin nodded, his heart skipping a beat at the invitation. "Yeah, I’d like that."
And as they walked away from the group, their fingers brushing in that familiar, comforting way, Gyuvin knew that whatever happened next, they would face it together, with the same ease and comfort that had always defined their friendship—now deepened into something more.
---
As Gyuvin and Gunwook walked away from the theater, they felt a contented silence settle between them, the kind that didn’t need to be filled with words. They made their way to a nearby restaurant, deciding on a cozy booth tucked away in the corner, where they could talk quietly over dinner.
As they waited for their food, Gyuvin’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw a string of new messages in the group chat they had with their friends.
Taerae: So… how long are you guys going to keep pretending nothing’s changed?
Hanbin: You two looked really cozy in the theater… just saying.
Ricky: Finally! We’ve been waiting ages for this to happen.
Gyuvin felt his face heat up as he read through the messages, a mix of embarrassment and amusement washing over him. He glanced up at Gunwook, who was already looking at his own phone, reading the same messages. Gunwook chuckled, his cheeks tinged with a slight blush.
"Looks like we weren’t as subtle as we thought," Gunwook said, tilting his phone to show Gyuvin another message that had just come in.
Zhang Hao: You guys are adorable together. About time you figured it out.
Gyuvin couldn’t help but laugh, the warmth of his friends’ support easing the last of his nerves. He typed out a quick response in the group chat.
Gyuvin: Alright, alright, you caught us. We’re still figuring it out, though.
Gunwook added his own message right after.
Gunwook: But thanks for the support, guys. Means a lot 😊
Immediately, more messages flooded in.
Ricky: Finally, I can stop pretending I don’t see the way you two look at each other 😆
Zhang Hao: Next step, double dates? 😉
Hanbin: Seriously, though, congrats, guys. We’re happy for you 💙
Gyuvin felt a rush of gratitude and affection for their friends, who had always been there for them. He looked up at Gunwook, who was smiling back at him, and for a moment, everything felt perfect.
Their food arrived, and they spent the rest of the evening talking, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company, the weight of the unspoken tension between them now gone. The texts from their friends had solidified that they weren’t in this alone—they had a whole support system cheering them on.
Later that night, after they’d finished dinner and were walking back to Gyuvin’s apartment, his phone buzzed one more time.
Taerae: Hey, just so you know, we’ve always seen how good you guys are together. That’s why I was teasing you so much. It’s great to see you both so happy 🥰
Gyuvin stopped walking for a moment, showing the message to Gunwook, who smiled softly. Without a word, Gunwook slipped his hand into Gyuvin’s, squeezing it gently. They walked the rest of the way hand in hand, feeling more sure of themselves and their new relationship with every step.
When they reached Gyuvin’s apartment, they paused at the door, neither wanting the night to end just yet.
"Want to come in?" Gyuvin asked, his voice a little shy, but hopeful.
Gunwook nodded. "Yeah, I’d like that."
They spent the rest of the night just being together—talking, watching movies, and enjoying the easy companionship that had always been the foundation of their friendship, now laced with something deeper.
And as they finally fell asleep, curled up together on the couch, their phones buzzed one last time, a late-night message from Zhang Hao.
Zhang Hao: Goodnight, lovebirds. Sweet dreams! 😜💤
Gyuvin smiled as he closed his eyes, feeling Gunwook’s steady breath beside him. They were surrounded by friends who cared for them and were excited for their journey together. And for the first time in a long time, everything felt exactly as it should be.
