Work Text:

Ilmo glances at Jaakko as they stand outside the Anderson trailer, holding a book of puns (a gift for Saga) in his hands. Saga never answered texts from either brother, leading to them turning up on her doorstep. It might seem overprotective to an outsider to run to visit her just because she didn't message them back, but things are different with Saga. They have known her for years, and never, ever imagined seeing Saga Anderson in this terrible state. All caused by the heartbreaking death of her daughter. So, Ilmo and Jaakko feel like the least they can do is check up on her and see if she's doing okay.

He knocks on the door, not surprised when he gets no reply. Saga might be hungover and sleeping like the dead. It's possible that she isn't even in, but Ilmo finds that unlikely—Saga hasn't left her trailer in over a week, only still eating because the twins bring her food several times a week. No, she must be in.

So, when he gets no response, Ilmo tries the door handle, prepared to take out his master key (being the landlord has its perks) to unlock the door just to check she's safe... but the door opens with no key needed. Leaving doors unlocked isn't typical Saga behaviour. Although... most of what she does lately isn't typical Saga behaviour. She has changed so much since she lost Logan, overwhelmed by despair and grief. So, Saga becoming so forgetful that she didn't lock the door is unfortunately believable.

"Saga?" Ilmo calls as he pushes the door open, stepping inside the trailer with Jaakko on his heels.

"We need to help her clean this place up," Jaakko whispers, staring at the beer bottles that litter every surface—even more than the last time they visited.

"Agreed," Ilmo mumbles, before raising his voice. "Hey, Saga? Are you okay?"

"Go away..." Saga says, her voice slurred.

He turns his head toward the source of her voice—and freezes. Saga kneels in a heap on the kitchen floor, surrounded by shards of a shattered beer bottle. Tears leak down her cheeks as she tries to pick up the pieces, barely seeming to notice the blood that runs down her hand and drips onto her pants.

"You're bleeding!" Jaakko gasps, somewhat speaking the obvious. But Ilmo doesn't point this out; helping Saga is more important than playfully bickering with his brother.

"Shit, what happened?" Ilmo says, abandoning the book and grabbing a dishcloth before crouching at her side. At the same time, Jaakko rummages through the kitchen cupboards, eventually locating a dustpan.

As Jaakko begins to sweep up the glass, Saga slaps Ilmo's hand away when he tries to cover her wounded finger with the makeshift bandage, muttering, "What d'you think?"

His gaze flickering from Saga's bleeding finger to the glass all over the floor, Ilmo's stomach suddenly cramps, a terrifying thought coming to him. "Saga... did you... hurt yourself on purpose?"

She lets out a sound probably supposed to be a laugh, weak and bitter. "No I fucking didn't. I just... dropped the bottle. I'm such a fucking idiot."

"You're not an idiot, Saga," Jaakko says over his shoulder.

"Yes I am. If I wasn't such an idiot my daughter would still be alive!" Saga cries, her voice cracking, and more tears spill down her face.

"Oh Saga..." Ilmo says, his broken heart fracturing all over again. Logan's death hit him hard, but nobody suffered more than Saga. It destroyed her. And Ilmo wishes he could put her back together.

As she crumples against him, Ilmo slips his arm around her waist, using his other hand to cover her bloody hand with the cloth. Jaakko puts the dustpan down and joins him, both brothers wrapping their broken friend in a big bear hug. Saga sobs pitifully, finally letting out her emotions after days of bottling them up. And Ilmo knows he can't fix her, but at least he can comfort Saga through her grief. So, he and Jaakko hug her tighter, letting Saga sob in their arms.
