“so when i get out of this place, i want to go on a picnic with you. under a clear, sunny, blue sky... i want to do all the cliché things, like eat sandwiches.”
the words replayed in the back of toko’s mind, a promise she made sure to stick to. back then, it sounded like just a distant hope for the future, for when the world returned to normal, that is— if it ever did. things seemed far too intense for that to ever happen, yet surprisingly, here they were, both sitting peacefully at the park and enjoying a picnic.
“soo… seems like you didn’t end up having any engagement ceremonies with byakuya today!” komaru started, slightly teasing her.
“oh, d-don't remind me of that! i believe i’m *well* over it now,” toko sighed, having a hint of annoyance in her voice. it wasn’t particularly at komaru, though, just the reminder of how she used to be.
it hadn’t been too long since then, yet plenty had changed. she slowly let go of her obsession with byakuya— despite it being difficult at first, she had managed to move forward. she now found comfort with komaru, feeling happier than ever.
komaru giggled and slightly waved her hands, “i know, i know! i’m just glad you’re here with me now, just as promised.”
“well, of course! i-i said i’d think about it... besides, nothing else came up anyway..”
even if something did come up, toko would’ve likely prioritized this over it anyway, nothing else was more important to her than spending quality time with komaru.
they then spread out a blanket beneath them. the picnic basket was filled with many delicious food such as sandwiches, salad, and a variety of other snacks. komaru also brought out some iced tea, it was definitely needed for a hot summer day like this.
while eating they mostly just had small talk, along with admiring the nature around them.. relaxing as they enjoyed the simplicity of the day.
suddenly, a group of ducks started waddling towards them, the quacks growing louder as they approached. toko froze, her eyes widening as they came closer.
“are they… are they coming over here?” toko asked, her voice anxious.
komaru glanced over and chucked a bit. “don’t worry, toko! they’re probably just looking for some bread. ducks love ‘em!”
she watched as komaru reached into the basket and pulled out a piece of bread, tearing it into tiny pieces and tossing them near the ducks. the ducks quickly pecked at the crumbs.
“see? i told you, they’re just after the bread!”
toko relaxed a little, watching as the ducks ate up the bits of bread. she smiled, finding it rather cute.
komaru continued, “it’s kinda nice, isn’t it? sharing our meal with a few unexpected guests!”
“y-yeah.. i guess so. though, don’t get t-too caught up and make us run out of food..”
“don’t worry, i won’t! at least.. i’ll *try* not to..”
she giggled, trying to avoid getting too distracted when feeding them.
as the day went on, they continued to chat and watched the sunset together as it came to a close. it was simple, yet felt perfect. they truly both wished it could last forever, and ever, and ever..
